Book Guidance Manual for Selection and Use of Sorbents for Liquid Hazardous Substance Releases

Download or read book Guidance Manual for Selection and Use of Sorbents for Liquid Hazardous Substance Releases written by Robert W. Melvold and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The document described herein is a guidance manual developed to provide information for the selection and use of sorbents for cleanup or control of liquid hazardous substances. Literature reviews, sorbent manufacturer data and experiences of Federal On-Scene Coordinators were reviewed in conjunction with laboratory studies to determine the compatibility and sorption capacity of selected representative hazardous liquid-sorbent pairs. The combined experimental and literature data were used to prepare the manual. On-scene coordinators and their technical support personnel are the primary target audience for the manual. Before utilizing the manual, the user must first identify the spilled liquid. If it is one of the 212 liquid hazardous substances addressed in the manual, a reference is provided to one of 26 ' 'Sorbent Selection and Use Guides." Each of the guides enables the user to rapidly identify the generic sorbent classes, physical forms, and methods for application and collection that are most suitable for each of three different chemical release-control scenarios: (1) a spill onto land; (2) a floating release into water; and (3) immobilization for landfilling. The manual contains ' 'Sorbent Data Sheets" for 13 generic classes of sorbents other than activated carbon. These data sheets contain information on manufacturers, acquisition costs, bulk density and sorbent limitations. The sorption capacity of 190 sorbent-chemical pairs was determined and recorded in the manual. The manual also includes cost estimation procedures, test methods, hazardous liquid physical properties, and a description of the rationale for the relase-control scenarios."

Book Unit Operations in Environmental Engineering

Download or read book Unit Operations in Environmental Engineering written by Robert Noyes and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1994-12-31 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the practical aspects of environmental technology organized into eight chapters relating to unit operations as follows: 1. Biological Technology 2. Chemical Technology 3. Containment and Barrier Technology 4. Immobilization Technology 5. Membrane Technology 6. Physical Technology 7. Radiation and Electrical Technology 8. Thermal Destruction Technology Traditional technologies have been included, as well as those that can be considered innovative and emerging. The traditional approaches have been the most successful, as contractors are careful about bidding on some of the newer technologies. However, as regulatory requirements increase, markets will open for the innovative and emerging processes. There will be increasing pressure to break down complex waste streams, with each subsequent stream demanding separate treatment. In addition, a number of technologies have been developed by combining processes directly, or in a treatment train, and these developments are expected to assume increasing importance. However, such concerns as uncertainties due to liability, regulatory approval, price competition, and client approval have limited the application of some of these newer technologies.

Book Resources and References

Download or read book Resources and References written by Donna S. Kocurek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-12-31 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide book provides references and resources for the complex field of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. The book is divided into general topics such as air quality, industrial wastewater, pollution prevention, and risk assessment under hazardous waste management and chemical hazards, emergency planning, and hazard communication under hazardous materials management. Each individual section includes a list of annotated bibliographies of the most recent books by major publishers as well as established, standard references. Following the annotated titles, are additional references of books and documents by publishers, technical associations, and governmental agencies (primarily the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). In general, only references from 1986 onward are included since the technology and regulations affecting hazardous waste and materials are constantly evolving. Additional resources included in the book are video tapes for training and instruction, information services and databases, libraries, agency contacts, technical journals, and a list of publishers and ordering information. This book will be a useful reference to professionals in the environmental field who need an extensive, but concise source of technical information and contacts. The book will be a valuable addition to individual libraries and will fill a current reference void in university libraries, and technical libraries in industry and government. At present there are very few technical bibliographies in the field, and none has covered topics related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste as extensively as this book.
