Download or read book The Late Voice written by Richard Elliott and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular music artists, as performers in the public eye, offer a privileged site for the witnessing and analysis of ageing and its mediation. The Late Voice will undertake such an analysis by considering issues of time, memory, innocence and experience in modern Anglophone popular song and the use by singers and songwriters of a 'late voice'. Lateness here refers to five primary issues: chronology (the stage in an artist's career); the vocal act (the ability to convincingly portray experience); afterlife (posthumous careers made possible by recorded sound); retrospection (how voices 'look back' or anticipate looking back); and the writing of age, experience, lateness and loss into song texts. There has been recent growth in research on ageing and the experience of later stages of life, focussing on physical health, lifestyle and psychology, with work in the latter field intersecting with the field of memory studies. The Late Voice seeks to connect age, experience and lateness with particular performers and performance traditions via the identification and analysis of a late voice in singers and songwriters of mid-late twentieth century popular music.

  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Presence Through Sound written by Keith Howard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presence Through Sound narrates and analyses, through a range of case studies on selected musics of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Tibet, some of the many ways in which music and ‘place’ intersect and are interwoven with meaning in East Asia. It explores how place is significant to the many contexts in which music is made and experienced, especially in contemporary forms of longstanding traditions but also in other landscapes such as popular music and in the design of performance spaces. It shows how music creates and challenges borders, giving significance to geographical and cartographic spaces at local, national, and international levels, and illustrates how music is used to interpret relationships with ecology and environment, spirituality and community, and state and nation. The volume brings together scholars from Australia, China, Denmark, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the UK, each of whom explores a specific genre or topic in depth. Each nuanced account finds distinct and at times different aspects to be significant but, in demonstrating the ability of music to mediate the construction of place and by showing how those who create and consume music use it to inhabit the intimate, and to project themselves out into their surroundings, each points to interconnections across the region and beyond with respect to perception, conception, expression, and interpretation. In Presence Through Sound, ethnomusicology meets anthropology, literature, linguistics, area studies, and – particularly pertinent to East Asia in the twenty-first century – local musicologies. The volume serves a broad academic readership and provides an essential resource for all those interested in East Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheena meets Number 5 with a touch of steampunk tossed in. It wasn’ always this way. People used to be in charge. No one planned on the Singularity. Its origins were in man-made robotics and artificial intelligence in the late 20th century. It was only a matter of time before the machines ran everything. Humanity pushed the planet to economic and ecological collapse. Poisoned air and water made the Northern Hemisphere almost uninhabitable. But computers don’t need water, air, or food. In the 22nd Century, the remaining human civilizations collaborated to build a last hope for humanity, a society run by genetically-engineered females. They chose the least populated and most hospitable continent for their social experiment and created Amazonia, an independent, technology-free nation. Caught in the middle are the slaves of both societies, the clones of Amazonia and the Androids of the Singularity. And after two hundred years of torment, they are banding together to rebel.
