This book was released on 1967 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a summary of the ten years (1955-1964) of observations of solar flares reported by 61 observatories. The flare reports have been published predominantly in the IAU Bulletin and CRPL-F Series Part B. This report summarizes the types of information contained in the flare reports, and the frequency of some parts of these reports as functions of many parameters. The results reflect the need for closer cooperation and coordination of participating observatories in recording and reporting solar flare data.

Book Solar Flare Occurrence as a Function of Sunspot Size

Download or read book Solar Flare Occurrence as a Function of Sunspot Size written by Isadore Enger and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An objective technique has been developed for assessing the probability of occurrence of solar flares in a particular sunspot group, given only the sizes of the sunspot group on two consecutive days. The sunspot data cover the 10-year period 1955 to 1964 and have been published in the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results. The flare data were measured at Sacramento Peak, New Mexico. The flare and spot data were combined by a simple, objective technique which depends only on the size of the spot group and the relative positions of the spot group and flare. These results show the very marked dependence of flare occurrence on the size of the spot group and a significant, but very much smaller, dependence on the change in group size from one day to the next. Download or read book Flare Occurrence Tomorrow as a Function of Area and Flariness of Sunspot Today written by Alfred E. Reilly and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An objective technique has been developed for estimating the probability of occurrence of solar flares in a particular sunspot group using both the size of the sunspot group and its 'flariness'. Tables are given which indicate the probability that at least one flare of importance two or greater will occur tomorrow, given the area and flariness of the sunspot group today. (Author).

Book Observing the Sun

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter O. Taylor
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1991-11-21
  • ISBN : 9780521401104
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Observing the Sun written by Peter O. Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observing the Sun is one of the most interesting and rewarding facets of astronomy to which amateurs can contribute. Few areas of science offer as many opportunities to contribute meaningful data. It is the one branch of astronomy that requires only modest equipment and can be pursued during the day. Peter Taylor is a keen and highly experienced observer of the Sun. In this book he explains in a clear and practical way everything that a telescope user needs to know in order to make solar observations. The author draws on his many years of personal experience as a contributor to the Solar Division of the American Association of Variable Star Observers and to the American Sunspot Program. The book deals with the following topics: historical background, choice of equipment for the safe conduct of solar observations, observations of sunspots, and reporting observations. New techniques, such as electronic recording and the operations of radio telescopes, are included. The level of presentation is understandable to anyone with basic astronomical knowledge and some experience in handling a small telescope.

Book Cosmic Rays at Earth

    Book Details:
  • Author : P.K.F. Grieder
  • Publisher : Elsevier

  • ISBN : 0080530052
  • Pages : 1117 pages

Download or read book Cosmic Rays at Earth written by P.K.F. Grieder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-07-27 with total page 1117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912 Victor Franz Hess made the revolutionary discovery that ionizing radiation is incident upon the Earth from outer space. He showed with ground-based and balloon-borne detectors that the intensity of the radiation did not change significantly between day and night. Consequently, the sun could not be regarded as the sources of this radiation and the question of its origin remained unanswered. Today, almost one hundred years later the question of the origin of the cosmic radiation still remains a mystery.Hess' discovery has given an enormous impetus to large areas of science, in particular to physics, and has played a major role in the formation of our current understanding of universal evolution. For example, the development of new fields of research such as elementary particle physics, modern astrophysics and cosmology are direct consequences of this discovery. Over the years the field of cosmic ray research has evolved in various directions: Firstly, the field of particle physics that was initiated by the discovery of many so-called elementary particles in the cosmic radiation. There is a strong trend from the accelerator physics community to reenter the field of cosmic ray physics, now under the name of astroparticle physics. Secondly, an important branch of cosmic ray physics that has rapidly evolved in conjunction with space exploration concerns the low energy portion of the cosmic ray spectrum. Thirdly, the branch of research that is concerned with the origin, acceleration and propagation of the cosmic radiation represents a great challenge for astrophysics, astronomy and cosmology. Presently very popular fields of research have rapidly evolved, such as high-energy gamma ray and neutrino astronomy. In addition, high-energy neutrino astronomy may soon initiate as a likely spin-off neutrino tomography of the Earth and thus open a unique new branch of geophysical research of the interior of the Earth. Finally, of considerable interest are the biological and medical aspects of the cosmic radiation because of it ionizing character and the inevitable irradiation to which we are exposed. This book is a reference manual for researchers and students of cosmic ray physics and associated fields and phenomena. It is not intended to be a tutorial. However, the book contains an adequate amount of background materials that its content should be useful to a broad community of scientists and professionals. The present book contains chiefly a data collection in compact form that covers the cosmic radiation in the vicinity of the Earth, in the Earth's atmosphere, at sea level and underground. Included are predominantly experimental but also theoretical data. In addition the book contains related data, definitions and important relations. The aim of this book is to offer the reader in a single volume a readily available comprehensive set of data that will save him the need of frequent time consuming literature searches.

Book Extreme Events in Geospace

Download or read book Extreme Events in Geospace written by Natalia Buzulukova and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extreme Events in Geospace: Origins, Predictability, and Consequences helps deepen the understanding, description, and forecasting of the complex and inter-related phenomena of extreme space weather events. Composed of chapters written by representatives from many different institutions and fields of space research, the book offers discussions ranging from definitions and historical knowledge to operational issues and methods of analysis. Given that extremes in ionizing radiation, ionospheric irregularities, and geomagnetically induced currents may have the potential to disrupt our technologies or pose danger to human health, it is increasingly important to synthesize the information available on not only those consequences but also the origins and predictability of such events. Extreme Events in Geospace: Origins, Predictability, and Consequences is a valuable source for providing the latest research for geophysicists and space weather scientists, as well as industries impacted by space weather events, including GNSS satellites and radio communication, power grids, aviation, and human spaceflight.
