Book Making Learning Visible

Download or read book Making Learning Visible written by Jens Bjørnåvold and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report presents an overview of European initiatives to make the identification, assessment and recognition of learning which takes place outside formal education and training institutions i.e.non-formal learning, more visible. Its invisibility is increasingly perceived as a problem affecting competence development at all levels from the individual to society as a whole. This Report is based on fourteen national reports commissioned 1997-1999 and includes information from other sources including the EU. Following the introduction, the report is in five chapters. Chapter 2 looks at basic theoretical issues such as the character of non-formal learning and the political implications of setting up systems in this area. Chapter 3 outlines initiatives and developments in the member states. Chapter 4 presents and discusses initiatives at the EU level, focusing on the white paper on teaching and learning and on experiences from the Leonardo da Vinci programme. Chapter 5 analyses the previous chapters and concluding remarks are presented in Chapter 6. The conclusion looks at why there has been a sudden burst of activity and interest in questions linked to non-formal learning and at how the positive elements of this activity can be supported.

I have no doubt that Young People and Social Change will rightly find its way onto the recommended reading lists of many in the field.” Professor Robert MacDonald, University of Teesside A welcome update to one of the most influential and authoritative books on young people in modern societies. With a fuller theoretical explanation and drawing on a comprehensive range of studies from Europe, North America, Australia and Japan, the second edition of Young People and Social Change is a valuable contribution to the field. The authors examine modern theoretical interpretations of social change in relation to young people and provide an overview of their experiences in a number of key contexts such as education, employment, the family, leisure, health, crime and politics. Building on the success of the previous edition, the second edition offers an expanded theoretical approach and wider coverage of empirical data to take into account worldwide developments in the field. Drawing on a wealth of research evidence, the book highlights key differences between the experiences of young people in different countries in the developed world. • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book When Scotland Was Jewish written by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

Book Learning at the Back Door

Download or read book Learning at the Back Door written by Charles A. Wedemeyer and published by IAP. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wedemeyer stresses that learning is a natural idiosyncratic, and continually renewable human trait and survival resource. It is not dependent upon teaching, schooling, or special environments, although-properly used-these resources enhance learning. There is a powerful subculture of independent learners who are responsible for much of the real progress that has been made in most areas on endeavor. This book attempts to explain this kind of learning and relate it to schooling, suggesting ways in which all learning-whether traditional or non-traditional-can be encouraged and improved through new kinds of educational institutions and processes.
