Book Matrix Computations and Semiseparable Matrices

Download or read book Matrix Computations and Semiseparable Matrices written by Raf Vandebril and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years several new classes of matrices have been discovered and their structure exploited to design fast and accurate algorithms. In this new reference work, Raf Vandebril, Marc Van Barel, and Nicola Mastronardi present the first comprehensive overview of the mathematical and numerical properties of the family's newest member: semiseparable matrices. The text is divided into three parts. The first provides some historical background and introduces concepts and definitions concerning structured rank matrices. The second offers some traditional methods for solving systems of equations involving the basic subclasses of these matrices. The third section discusses structured rank matrices in a broader context, presents algorithms for solving higher-order structured rank matrices, and examines hybrid variants such as block quasiseparable matrices. An accessible case study clearly demonstrates the general topic of each new concept discussed. Many of the routines featured are implemented in Matlab and can be downloaded from the Web for further exploration.

Book On the Symmetric Generation of Finite Groups

Download or read book On the Symmetric Generation of Finite Groups written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we discuss some uses and applications of the techniques in Symmetric generation. In Chapter 1 we introduce the notions of symmetric generation. In Chapter 2 we discuss symmetric presentations defined by symmetric generating sets that are preserved by a group acting on them transitively but imprimitively. In Chapter 3 our attention turns to Coxeter groups. We show how the Coxeter-Moser presentations traditionally associated with the families of finite Coxeter groups of types A\(_n\), D\(_n\) and E\(_n\) (ie the "simply laced" Coxeter groups) may be interpreted as symmetric presentations and as such may be naturally arrived at by elementary means. In Chapter 4 we classify the irreducible monomial representations of the groups L\(_2\)(q) and use these to define symmetric generating sets of various groups.

Book Symmetry Representation Theory and Its Applications

Download or read book Symmetry Representation Theory and Its Applications written by Roger Howe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-04 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nolan Wallach's mathematical research is remarkable in both its breadth and depth. His contributions to many fields include representation theory, harmonic analysis, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, number theory, differential equations, Riemannian geometry, ring theory, and quantum information theory. The touchstone and unifying thread running through all his work is the idea of symmetry. This volume is a collection of invited articles that pay tribute to Wallach's ideas, and show symmetry at work in a large variety of areas. The articles, predominantly expository, are written by distinguished mathematicians and contain sufficient preliminary material to reach the widest possible audiences. Graduate students, mathematicians, and physicists interested in representation theory and its applications will find many gems in this volume that have not appeared in print elsewhere. Book Exercises in Cellular Automata and Groups

Download or read book Exercises in Cellular Automata and Groups written by Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book complements the authors’ monograph Cellular Automata and Groups [CAG] (Springer Monographs in Mathematics). It consists of more than 600 fully solved exercises in symbolic dynamics and geometric group theory with connections to geometry and topology, ring and module theory, automata theory and theoretical computer science. Each solution is detailed and entirely self-contained, in the sense that it only requires a standard undergraduate-level background in abstract algebra and general topology, together with results established in [CAG] and in previous exercises. It includes a wealth of gradually worked out examples and counterexamples presented here for the first time in textbook form. Additional comments provide some historical and bibliographical information, including an account of related recent developments and suggestions for further reading. The eight-chapter division from [CAG] is maintained. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main definitions and results contained in the corresponding chapter of [CAG]. The book is suitable either for classroom or individual use. Foreword by Rostislav I. Grigorchuk

Book A Tour of Representation Theory

Download or read book A Tour of Representation Theory written by Martin Lorenz and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representation theory investigates the different ways in which a given algebraic object--such as a group or a Lie algebra--can act on a vector space. Besides being a subject of great intrinsic beauty, the theory enjoys the additional benefit of having applications in myriad contexts outside pure mathematics, including quantum field theory and the study of molecules in chemistry. Adopting a panoramic viewpoint, this book offers an introduction to four different flavors of representation theory: representations of algebras, groups, Lie algebras, and Hopf algebras. A separate part of the book is devoted to each of these areas and they are all treated in sufficient depth to enable and hopefully entice the reader to pursue research in representation theory. The book is intended as a textbook for a course on representation theory, which could immediately follow the standard graduate abstract algebra course, and for subsequent more advanced reading courses. Therefore, more than 350 exercises at various levels of difficulty are included. The broad range of topics covered will also make the text a valuable reference for researchers in algebra and related areas and a source for graduate and postgraduate students wishing to learn more about representation theory by self-study.
