Book Maine Apple Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maine Apple Diseases Classic Reprint written by Warner Jackson Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maine Apple Diseases In this State fungi are responsible for the major part Of the loss from the diseases under consideration. Fungi are low forms Of plant life made up Of threads of microscopic size. These threads constitute the mycelium of the fungus, which penetrates into the tissues Of the host, causing the death of the cells which compose these tissues and living upon their con tents. The conspicuous portions Oi the fungus which are seen on the surface of the host are in most cases the fruiting organs. Instead Of seeds these fruiting organs produce various forms and in various ways, often in vast numbers, more simple bodies which are known as spores. In combatting apple diseases caused by fungi, the chief Object is to prevent the formation of these spores, or if they are formed to destroy them before they can germinate and gain a foothold upon healthy fruit, foliage, or wood. This is more frequently brought about bv destroying the diseased portions as soon as Observed and by coating or spraying the healthy parts with some substance which will prevent the germination and destroy the spores if by chance they fall thereon. Occasionally bitter rot, as in the year 1900, overshadows all other diseases in destructive ness, but taken year by year apple blotch is more serious. Fortunately the disease Is amenable to treatment and can not gain a foothold In well sprayed orchards. It is not sporadic in its nature and must accumulate on the twigs several years before a serious outbreak on the fruit can occur. Book Spraying Experiments and Apple Diseases in 1913 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Experiments and Apple Diseases in 1913 As a rule we have found that with the Ben Davis spray injury from bor-deaux mixture was so severe that it equalled or more than offset the beneficial effects derived from the control of apple scab. While a much better grade of fruit from the standpoint of keeping quality and freedom from disease has been the invariable result from trees sprayed with this mate rial the russeted appearance of the skin materially reduced its market value. In other words, while the injurious effects of bordeaux mixture and certain other sprays upon the fruit of susceptible varieties like the Ben Davis are concerned almost wholly with the appearance of the fruit and not with its keep ing quality or value as an article of food the price it will bring on the market is just as effectually reduced as though the lat ter were the case. If the selling price of apples depended more on the quality of the fruit and less on the appearance of the skin certain of the difficulties now experienced in spraying would disappear. Book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables

Download or read book Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables written by Dean Humboldt Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Market Diseases of Fruits and Vegetables: Apples, Pears, Quinces Some of the more important facts concerning fungi (molds) should be kept in mind in dealing with fungus diseases of fruits. An important characteristic of most fungi is that they produce minute bodies called spores, which are usually the most important means by which fungi reproduce themselves and are distributed. Being small and light, spores are easily carried by wind, rain, insects, and other agents. Spores of several kinds of fungi that attack fruits are quite common on the soil surface and on all plant parts above ground. Spores on the surface of a fruit, under favorable conditions, produce fine fungus threads that may enter the fruit and cause disease. Fungus spores lie inert until temperature and moisture condi tions are favorable for their germination. The fungus threads they produce may or may not enter the fruit through the unbroken skin, but they are always more likely to enter if skin breaks are present. Factors that favor the development of each disease in storage, in transit, or on the market are discussed under appropri ate headings.
