Book Software for Fault Detection in HVAC Systems in Commercial Buildings

Download or read book Software for Fault Detection in HVAC Systems in Commercial Buildings written by Suhrid Avinash Deshmukh and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The building sector of the United States currently consumes over 41% of the United States primary energy supply. Estimates suggest that between 5 and 30% of any building's annual energy consumption is unknowingly wasted due to pathologically malfunctioning lighting and comfort conditioning systems. This paper presents analytical methods embodied within useful software tools to quickly identify and evaluate those building system faults that cause large building energy inefficiencies. The technical contributions of this work include expert rules that adapt to HVAC equipment scale and operation and methods for sorting fault signals according to user-defined interests such as annual cost of energy inefficiencies. These contributions are particularly unique in their treatment of model and the careful consideration of user interests in fault evaluation. As a first step to developing this general framework for fault detection, first order faults such as simultaneous heating and cooling and imbalanced airflows within several large air-handling units were targeted. Savings of around $22,500 were predicted when the fault of simultaneous heating and cooling was occurring over the entire month in an air handler. Some of the other faults include the heat recovery pump operation in air handling units. An example of the potential energy savings in a large hospital that has been monitored is presented. Yearly savings of around $24,000 were predicted by correcting the operation of the heat recovery pump. Faults in the cooling system were also explored. The paper presents a strategy to load multiple centrifugal chillers with a monotonically increasing COP vs. partload ratio curve. The paper also considers the optimization of cooling tower fan operation coupled with the chiller operation. Models for cooling tower performance and chiller performance are used to define the operation that yields the minimum energy consumption of the system. The number of cooling tower fans and the use of multiple towers with a single chiller are considered. The optimum operation is compared to actual operations to signal operating faults. User testing and experiments show that embracing uncertainty within HVAC fault detection and evaluation is not only paramount to judicious fault inference but it is also central to gaining the trust and buy-in of system users who ultimately can apply fault detection information to actually fix and improve building operations.

Book Model based Fault Diagnosis in Dynamic Systems Using Identification Techniques

Download or read book Model based Fault Diagnosis in Dynamic Systems Using Identification Techniques written by Silvio Simani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety in industrial process and production plants is a concern of rising importance but because the control devices which are now exploited to improve the performance of industrial processes include both sophisticated digital system design techniques and complex hardware, there is a higher probability of failure. Control systems must include automatic supervision of closed-loop operation to detect and isolate malfunctions quickly. A promising method for solving this problem is "analytical redundancy", in which residual signals are obtained and an accurate model of the system mimics real process behaviour. If a fault occurs, the residual signal is used to diagnose and isolate the malfunction. This book focuses on model identification oriented to the analytical approach of fault diagnosis and identification covering: choice of model structure; parameter identification; residual generation; and fault diagnosis and isolation. Sample case studies are used to demonstrate the application of these techniques.

Book Solving Fault Diagnosis Problems

Download or read book Solving Fault Diagnosis Problems written by Andreas Varga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses fault detection and isolation topics from a computational perspective. Unlike most existing literature, it bridges the gap between the existing well-developed theoretical results and the realm of reliable computational synthesis procedures. The model-based approach to fault detection and diagnosis has been the subject of ongoing research for the past few decades. While the theoretical aspects of fault diagnosis on the basis of linear models are well understood, most of the computational methods proposed for the synthesis of fault detection and isolation filters are not satisfactory from a numerical standpoint. Several features make this book unique in the fault detection literature: Solution of standard synthesis problems in the most general setting, for both continuous- and discrete-time systems, regardless of whether they are proper or not; consequently, the proposed synthesis procedures can solve a specific problem whenever a solution exists Emphasis on the best numerical algorithms to solve the synthesis problems for linear systems in generalized state-space form (also known as descriptor systems) Development of general synthesis procedures relying on new computational paradigms, such as factorization-based design based on filter updating techniques and nullspace-based synthesis Availability of a comprehensive set of free accompanying software tools for descriptor systems, which allows readers to easily implement all synthesis procedures presented in the book and ensures that all results are reproducible This book is primarily intended for researchers and advanced graduate students in the areas of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control. It will also appeal to mathematicians with an interest in control-oriented numerics.

Book Characterization and Survey of Automated Fault Detection and Diagnostics Tools

Download or read book Characterization and Survey of Automated Fault Detection and Diagnostics Tools written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that 5%-30% of the energy used in commercial buildings is wasted due to faults and errors in the operation of the control system. Tools that are able to automatically identify and isolate these faults offer the potential to greatly improve performance, and to do so cost effectively. This document characterizes the diverse landscape of these automated fault detection and diagnostic (AFDD) technologies, according to a common framework that captures key distinguishing features and core elements. To understand the diversity of technologies that provide AFDD, a framework was developed to capture key elements to distinguish the functionality and potential application of one offering from another. The AFDD characterization framework was applied to 14 currently available technologies, comprising a sample of market offerings. These 14 technologies largely represent solutions that integrate with building automation systems, that use temporary in field measurements, or that are implemented as retrofit add-ons to existing equipment. To characterize them, publicly available information was gathered from product brochures and websites, and from technical papers. Additional information was acquired through interviews and surveys with the developers of each AFDD tool. The study concludes with a discussion of technology gaps, needs for the commercial sector, and promising areas for future development.

Book Data driven Whole Building Fault Detection and Diagnosis

Download or read book Data driven Whole Building Fault Detection and Diagnosis written by Yimin Chen and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residential and commercial buildings are responsible for more than 40% of the primary energy consumption in the United States. Energy wastes are estimated to reach 15% to 30% of total energy consumption due to malfunctioning sensors, components, and control systems, as well as degrading components in Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and lighting systems in commercial buildings in the U.S. Studies have demonstrated that a large energy saving can be achieved by automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) followed by corrections. Field studies have shown that, AFDD tools can help to reach energy savings by 5-30% from different systems such as HVAC systems, lighting systems, and refrigeration systems. At the same time, the deployment of AFDD tools can also significantly improve indoor air quality, reduce peak demand, and lower pollution. In buildings, many components or equipment are closely coupled in a HVAC system. Because of the coupling, a fault happening in one component might propagate and affect other components or subsystems. In this study, a whole building fault (WBF) is defined as a fault that occurs in one component or equipment but causes fault impacts (abnormalities) on other components and subsystems, or causes significant impacts on energy consumption and/or indoor air quality. Over the past decades, extensive research have been conducted on the development of component AFDD methods and tools. However, whole building AFDD methods, which can detect and diagnose a WBF, have not been well studied. Existing component level AFDD solutions often fail to detect a WBF or generate a high false alarm rate. Isolating a WBF is also very challenging by using component level AFDD solutions. Even with the extensive research, cost-effectiveness and scalability of existing AFDD methods are still not satisfactory. Therefore, the focus of this research is to develop cost-effective and scalable solutions for WBF AFDD. This research attempts to integrate data-driven methods with expert knowledge/rules to overcome the above-mentioned challenges. A suite of WBF AFDD methods have hence been developed, which include: 1) a weather and schedule based pattern matching method and feature based Principal Component Analysis (WPM-FPCA) method for whole building fault detection. The developed WPM-FPCA method successfully overcome the challenges such as the generation of accurate and dynamic baseline and data dimensionality reduction. And 2) a data-driven and expert knowledge/rule based method using both Bayesian Network (BN) and WPM for WBF diagnosis. The developed WPM-BN method includes a two-layer BN structure model and BN parameter model which are either learned from baseline data or developed from expert knowledge. Various WBFs have been artificially implemented in a real demo building. Building operation data which include baseline data, data that contain naturally-occurred faults and artificially implemented faults are collected and analyzed. Using the collected real building data, the developed methods are evaluated. The evaluation demonstrates the efficacy of the developed methods to detect and diagnose a WBF, as well as their implementation cost-effectiveness.
