Book excerpt: Do you suffer from the Blank Page Syndrome? Do you have trouble thinking up what you want to say when you're called on to write or to speak? Not being able to find the right words can get in the way of romance and success! Retired advertising man Malachy Walsh had to write on demand for 30 years. In Socratic Scribbling, he reveals secrets he learned from Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Quintillion, Shakespeare, and other Great Writers and Thinkers that helped him make his mark in advertising. Malachy believes good writing is less about following rules and more about making things happen with words. He shows us how to explain complicated things in simple ways, how to persuade people by getting them to convince themselves, how to tell stories that delight and instruct, and how to make speeches that engage and enchant. And it all starts when we follow Socrates as he asks the right questions.

Book The Shorter Socratic Writings

Download or read book The Shorter Socratic Writings written by Xenophon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents translations of three dialogues Xenophon devoted to the life and thought of his teacher, Socrates. Each is accompanied by notes and an interpretative essay that will introduce new readers to Xenophon and foster further reflection in those familiar with his writing. "Apology of Socrates to the Jury" shows how Socrates conducted himself when he was tried on the capital charge of not believing in the city's gods and corrupting the young. Although Socrates did not secure his own acquittal, he profoundly impressed some listeners who then helped to shape the public perception of philosophy as a noble, if highly idiosyncratic, way of life. In "Oeconomicus," Xenophon relates the conversation Socrates had on the day he turned from the study of natural philosophy to that of moral and political matters. "Oeconomicus" is concerned most directly with the character and purpose of Socrates' political philosophy. Xenophon provides entertaining portraits of Socrates' circle of friends in the "Symposium." In the process, he conveys the source of every individual's pride in himself, thus defining for each a conception of human excellence or virtue. The dialogue concludes with Socrates' beautiful speech on love (eros) and its proper place in the good or happy life.

Book Hermeneutics as Politics

Download or read book Hermeneutics as Politics written by Stanley Rosen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermeneutics as Politics, perhaps the most important critique of post-modern thought ever written, is here reissued in a special fifteenth anniversary edition. In a new foreword, Robert B. Pippin argues that the book has rightfully achieved the status of a classic. Rosen illuminates the underpinnings of post-modernist thought, providing valuable insight as he pursues two arguments: first, that post-modernism, which regards itself as an attack upon the Enlightenment, is in fact merely a continuation of Enlightenment thought; and second, that the extraordinary contemporary emphasis upon hermeneutics is the latest consequence of the triumph of history over mathematics and science. "Perhaps the most original and philosophically important critical account of hermeneutics--of its philosophical status and historical development--to appear since Gadamer's Truth and Method."--Choice "A philosophical polemic of the highest order written in a language of unfailing verve and precision. . . . It will repay manyfold the labour of a slow and considered reading."--J. M. Coetzee, Upstream

Book Silicon Literacies

Download or read book Silicon Literacies written by Ilana Snyder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-29 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic communication is radically altering literacy practices. Silicon Literacies unravels the key features of the new communication order to explore the social, cultural and educational impact of silicon literacy practices. Written by leading international scholars from a range of disciplines, the essays in this collection examine the implications of text produced on a keyboard, visible on a screen and transmitted through a global network of computers. The book covers topics as diverse as role-playing in computer games, the use of graphic symbols in on-screen texts and Internet degree programmes to reveal that being literate is to do with understanding how different modalities combine to create meaning. Recognizing that reading and writing are only part of what people have to learn to be literate, the contributors enhance our understanding of the ways in which the use of new technologies influence, shape and sometimes transform literacy practices.

Book EccentriCities Writing in the margins of Modernism

Download or read book EccentriCities Writing in the margins of Modernism written by Sharon Lubkemann Allen and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative, interdisciplinary, incisive scholarly study remapping and redefining domains and dynamics of modernism, EccentriCities: Writing in the margins of modernism critically considers how geo-historically distant and disparate urban sites, concentrating Russian and Luso-Brazilian cultural dialogue and definition, give rise to peculiarly parallel anachronistic and alternative fictional forms. While comparatively reframing these literary traditions through an extensive survey of Russian and Brazilian literature, cartography, urban design and development, foregrounding innovative close readings of works by Gogol, Dostoevsky, Bely, Almeida, Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto, Mário de Andrade, the book also redefines new constellations (eccentric, concentric, ex-centric) for understanding geo-cultural and generic dimensions of modernist and post-modern literature and theory.

Book Socrates in Chains

Download or read book Socrates in Chains written by Sarah F. Viehmann and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Socratic Method, originally known as elenchus, has long been taken as a "given" in writing center theory and practice. This thesis seeks to question the method's usefulness. I explore the origins of elenchus to determine its original purpose, and then trace its evolution and appropriation by Expressivist Composition pedagogy. Next, I study the assumptions that must be made in order for the Socratic Method to work and where these assumptions fall short to bridge the gap between ideals and reality. I examine the power relationship between tutor and writer, which is not as egalitarian as it may first appear, and then I suggest a different model of tutor/writer interaction that is not based upon an assumption of equality, but upon the admission that there is an inherent inequality in the interaction between participants in a session. This model uses BDSM (Bondage/domination/submission/sadism/masochism) to study this inequality and explains how it may be purposeful and productive. In the end, elenchus is a method developed in a specific rhetorical situation for a specific purpose, and that purpose may not be in line with what Composition seeks to accomplish.

Book excerpt: In this book, 34 renowned philosophical practitioners from 20 different countries present a variety of dialogue methods for philosophical practice, which have never before been published in such a compact and compiled form. By having Socrates and his method of maieutics (the art of midwifery of the soul, as he called it) as one of its main sources of inspiration, the book offers different methodological approaches in order to prompt people to wonder, to reflect, to change perspective, and to think differently; in short, to make people philosophize about life and the way they live it. Download or read book Dialogue and Discovery written by Kenneth Seeskin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Socratic method of elenchus, or refutation. Refutation by its very nature is a conflict, which in the hands of Plato becomes high drama. The continuing conversation in which it occurs is more a test of character than of intellect. Dialogue and Discovery shows that, in his conversations, Socrates seeks to define moral qualities—moral essences—with the goal of improving the soul of the respondent. Ethics underlies epistemology because the discovery of philosophic truth imposes moral demands on the respondent. The recognition that moral qualities such as honesty, humility, and courage are necessary to successful inquiry is the key to the understanding of the Socratic paradox that virtue is knowledge. The dialogues receiving the most emphasis are the Apology, Gorgias, Protagoras, and Meno.
