Download or read book Restoring the Kingdom written by Michael A. Salmeier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book of Acts divine involvement is everywhere. From the beginning God is responsible for promised action, including the geographic expansion--"in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (1:7)--referenced in Jesus' response to the disciples, clearly related to Luke's purpose in writing the book. Geographic expansion, however, is only the second part of Jesus' reply. Is it possible that the first half of Jesus' reply--"It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority"--has even greater bearing on the actions that follow and on Luke's purpose? Is the Father setting times and seasons related to the kingdom's establishment? Does this phrase explain the conspicuous divine involvement throughout the plot? In Restoring the Kingdom, Michael Salmeier answers these questions in the affirmative by exploring Luke's characterization of God in three strands: God as the King who establishes and restores Israel's king, who establishes his people, and who directs events. This unfolds Luke's purpose in assuring the reader concerning the events that have taken place, helping to more fully illuminate Luke's theology concerning God and his kingdom.

Book The Uncertainty of a Hearing

Download or read book The Uncertainty of a Hearing written by Federico Villanueva and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interesting feature in the lament psalms is the sudden change of mood. Unfortunately, as the term that has come to be associated with the subject indicates – ‘Certainty of a Hearing’ – the change of mood is understood only in terms of a movement from lament to praise. This has led to a redefinition of lament in terms of petition and an overemphasis on praise. The present book seeks to redress this one-sided emphasis by drawing attention to the other movements in the Psalter – the reverse movement from praise to lament, return to lament after praise and the alternation between the two. We do not only have a ‘Certainty of a Hearing’; we also have an ‘Uncertainty of a Hearing’.

Book Companion to the Old Testament

Download or read book Companion to the Old Testament written by Hywel Clifford and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides intelligent enrichment for encounters with the Old Testament, the first part of the Christian Bible. There are chapters on its five main sections: the Pentateuch, the Historical Books, Poetry and Wisdom, the Prophetic Books, and the Apocrypha/Deutero-Canon. Each of the core chapters covers three areas: an introduction to the general significance of each section in its ancient context; a survey of major ways these sacred texts have been interpreted in the global history of Christianity; and suggestions for how its texts apply to Christian ministry and mission today. These areas are often treated separately by scholars, but this book usefully offers an integrated overview of these areas that will inform and inspire, and serve the interests and needs of students and general readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel according to John presents Jesus in a unique way as compared with other New Testament writings. Scholars have long puzzled and pondered over why this should be. In this book, James McGrath offers a convincing explanation of how and why the author of the Fourth Gospel arrived at a christological portrait of Jesus that is so different from that of other New Testament authors, and yet at the same time clearly has its roots in earlier tradition. McGrath suggests that as the author of this Gospel sought to defend his beliefs about Jesus against the objections brought by opponents, he developed and drew out further implications from the beliefs he inherited. The book studies this process using insights from the field of sociology which helps to bring methodological clarity to the important issue of the development of Johannine Christology.

Book Jesus and Israel s Traditions of Judgement and Restoration

Download or read book Jesus and Israel s Traditions of Judgement and Restoration written by Steven M. Bryan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus and Israel's Traditions of Judgement and Restoration examines the eschatology of Jesus by evaluating his appropriation of sacred traditions related to Israel's restoration. It addresses the way in which Jesus' future expectations impinged upon his understanding of key features of Jewish society. Scholars have long debated the degree to which Jesus' eschatology can be said to have been realized. This 2002 book considers Jesus' expectations regarding key constitutional features of the eschaton: the shape of the people of God, purity, Land and Temple. Bryan shows that Jesus' anticipation of coming national judgement led him to use Israel's sacred traditions in ways that differed significantly from their use by his contemporaries. This did not lead Jesus to the conviction that Israel's restoration had been delayed. Instead he employed Israel's traditions to support a different understanding of restoration and a belief that the time of restoration had arrived.
