Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Teetotalism Without detracting at all from the importance of the indus trial and social character of the Drink Problem, it is necessary not to forget that the question has a personal side, and that there are few or none of the evils which curse our country t'o-day which it is so well within the power of the individual to. Escape from, as from indulgence in drink. A vast amount of drinking is due neither to low wages, to bad housing, hard work, nor the worry of business. It is indulged in thoughtlessly at first, because drinking is supposed to be proof of sociability, and the practice grows and the appetite is fed until it becomes a regular habit. Book The Case for Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Case for Socialism Classic Reprint written by Fred Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Socialism One of the most remarkable and hopeful aspects of the present great revival of Socialism, and one of the earnests of its ultimate triumph, is the sudden multitude of capable workers it has called into activity. The older movement in the "eighties" had only a few spokesmen and writers; now one can scarcely take up a local newspaper without finding evidence of capable exponents. Socialism, it is scarcely too much to say, has given men souls, has created minds; never was there a movement so independent of its leaders, so sure to produce men at its need. Here, for instance, is Mr. Henderson, with this admirable tract of his. I know he will forgive my confessing that I had never heard of him until my friend Mr. Gerald Gould called my attention to his manuscript. And here it is, closely and clearly reasoned, persuasive, plain, and easy. Let the reader compare it with Mr. Arnold Forster's recent ridiculous attack upon the Socialist position - or rather, I should say, his recent misunderstanding and misstatement of the Socialist position. Let the reader put it thoughtfully beside the utterance of any contemporary anti-Socialist, except, let us say, Mr. Mallock. There is no gainsaying its superior grip, its force, its conviction. It is one more good weapon for the propaganda of the most inspiring movement, the best-equipped movement intellectually, that the world has ever seen. Book The New Socialism

Download or read book The New Socialism written by Jane T. Stoddart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. Book The Socialist Argument Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Socialist Argument Classic Reprint written by Charles C. Hitchcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist Argument The questions which today are pressing most earnestly for solution are those relating to Economics; they are occupying the attention of every thoughtful mind. Owing to the complex nature of our civilization these questions are considerably involved, and unless serious and prolonged study is given them they re main confusing, if not apparently insolvable. How ever, a thorough and unbiased study of the funda mental economic principles involved reveals not only the imperative necessity of an industrial democracy, but also Shows that Socialism is the widest possible application of common sense to human relationships. It is well to recognize the fact that, into whatever social state a people are born, that people are in a degree environed by a web of customs, beliefs, tradi tions, laws, etc., which tend to bind them to the past and to, prejudice them against it ovations. As we ac quaint ourselves with the law of development, how ever, we must recognize that this law is constantly Operative not only in the inorganic and the organic worlds, but in social affairs as well. Book Labor Questions and Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Labor Questions and Socialism Classic Reprint written by Charles Bradlaugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor Questions and Socialism The workers and those who claim to be their special advocates seem to advocate, and seem now disposed to copy, the worst forms of bad legislation of past generations as to the regulation of the relations between employer and employed. Then, laws were passed to control the laborer, now, it is proposed to procure enactments to control the employer. As Professor Thorold Rogers points out, the Act of Elizabeth and the regulations of Quarter Sessions which prescribed twelve hours work a day all the year round only provoked evasion and resistance on the part of employer and employed. The natural tendency to-day is in the direction of shorter hours of labor. Where laws for limiting hours of labor have recently been resorted to, they have achieved very little. This is illustrated by recent Transatlantic experience, and is shown by the introductory remarks on the hours of labor in Vol. XX. Of the tenth Census of the United States of America. On the contrary, organisation has already had considerable effect in diminishing the number of hours worked per day. The question Of Socialist participation in bourgeois cabinets is treated both as it stood before the war and as it has been affected by that great catastrophe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drink Question: Its Social and Medical Aspects As communities became more settled and the popula tion of each one increased in size, the various occupations arose, and with these the mental power of man began to be developed. From a muscular animal he became a thinking animal, and the world in which he lived began to improve. The brain worked with wonderful rapidity, and in a few hundred years, a moment of time as com pared with the many cycles which preceded them, it had established governments, recognised the existence of the democracy, invented printing, and drawn the four quar ters of the world into the most intimate communication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Character: A Contribution Towards a System of Applied Ethics I do not know Of any work on the same lines. I have tried to be both concrete and constructive, believing that the best way to expel anti-social tendencies in thought and action is to instil pro-social ideas and give the reasons for pro-social conduct. As Comte said, Nothing is destroyed until it is replaced and the Vandals are out in such numbers, and their blows fall with such vigour on the fabric Of conventional morality, that some replacement does indeed require to be done. Those who read these papers as they appeared week by week in justice will perhaps notice that the Chapter on the drink question has been omitted, as well as the portion of the second chapter leading up to it. This has been done, not because Of any material change Of opinion on the question, but because such a topic was apart from the constructive aim and character Of the book. L. Book Socialism Exposed and Refuted Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialism Exposed and Refuted Classic Reprint written by Victor Cathrein and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism Exposed and Refuted The following pages form a chapter of the author's famous work on "Moral Philosophy." It was published separately in the original, and met with the most cordial reception. Not only were five large editions called for in less than two years, but translations were published in French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Flemish, which promise to rival the original in popularity. It has become a work of truly international fame. The chief value of this little work is in the fact that it goes to the true sources of socialism, whether considered as a scientific economic theory or as a living social and political movement. There is nothing second-hand about it. The author did not shrink from the toil of examining the most voluminous and abstruse works as well as the ephemeral productions of the daily press and of socialistic oratory. Socialists themselves give him credit for having interpreted their meaning and their aims more faithfully and accurately than some of their own followers. It is this accurate interpretation of the principles and policy of socialism that gives a universal and permanent value to Father Cathrein's treatise.
