Book The Columbia Guide to American Indians of the Northeast

Download or read book The Columbia Guide to American Indians of the Northeast written by Kathleen J. Bragdon and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descriptions of Indian peoples of the Northeast date to the Norse sagas, centuries before permanent European settlement, and the region has been the setting for a long history of contact, conflict, and accommodation between natives and newcomers. The focus of an extraordinarily vital field of scholarship, the Northeast is important both historically and theoretically: patterns of Indian-white relations that developed there would be replicated time and again over the course of American history. Today the Northeast remains the locus of cultural negotiation and controversy, with such subjects as federal recognition, gaming, land claims, and repatriation programs giving rise to debates directly informed by archeological and historical research of the region. The Columbia Guide to American Indians of the Northeast is a concise and authoritative reference resource to the history and culture of the varied indigenous peoples of the region. Encompassing the very latest scholarship, this multifaceted volume is divided into four parts. Part I presents an overview of the cultures and histories of Northeastern Indian people and surveys the key scholarly questions and debates that shape this field. Part II serves as an encyclopedia, alphabetically listing important individuals and places of significant cultural or historic meaning. Part III is a chronology of the major events in the history of American Indians in the Northeast. The expertly selected resources in Part IV include annotated lists of tribes, bibliographies, museums and sites, published sources, Internet sites, and films that can be easily accessed by those wishing to learn more.

Book Prehistoric Social Organization Before and After Agriculture

Download or read book Prehistoric Social Organization Before and After Agriculture written by Paul Proulx and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a detailed account of the transformation in social organization that came with the adoption of subsistence agriculture by the foragers who lived in one resource rich area of the planet (the Lower Great Lakes). The technique used is lexical reconstruction, correlated where possible with archaeological data. My research suggests that in simple societies whose politics are all kin based, the kinship terminology serves as an oral constitution, amendments to which involve new terms with pertinent etymologies. By carefully noting the etymologies of innovations, one can reconstruct prehistoric social change.

Book Suckling

  • Author : Fadwa El Guindi
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-02-21
  • ISBN : 0429851863
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Suckling written by Fadwa El Guindi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking ethnographic study of suckling in the Arabian Gulf , this book reenergises the study of kinship. It analyses the misunderstood and marginalized phenomenon of suckling drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Qatar over a seven-year period. Fadwa El Guindi situates suckling (often given other names or subsumed under misleading classifications) squarely in the analytical category of kinship, with recognition that kinship is necessarily biological, societal and cultural. The volume takes kinship study beyond origins, nature-culture debates, and social nurturing and relatedness, and challenges claims of deterministic, reductionist formulas. As well as key reading for those involved in milk kinship research, this book is valuable for anthropologists, Middle East scholars and others with an interest in breastfeeding, family and social organisation, and religion.
