Book Social Capital in Development Planning

Download or read book Social Capital in Development Planning written by Raffaella Y. Nanetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pursuit of sustainable development and smart growth is a main challenge today in countries around the world. Social capital is an asset of their territorial communities. It is also a precondition for national and local policies that aim to better the economic base and quality of life for all. This change is socially diffused, economically sustainable over time, and smart in its content. A significant stock of social capital facilitates such results because it links into the process of development planning institutional decision makers and socioeconomic stakeholders who share trust, solidarity norms, and a community vision. In the last thirty years, social capital has become a forceful concept in the social sciences, the subject of many scholarly works and a topic of keen interest and debate in policy circles. Yet the main focus has been on defining and measuring social capital, with little attention given to its value in promoting development policies. Social Capital in Development Planning updates and advances the debate on social capital through the analysis of the application of the concept of social capital to programs for sustainable and smart socioeconomic development; empirical findings; and a new paradigm for development planning.

Book Neighborhood Planning and Community Based Development

Download or read book Neighborhood Planning and Community Based Development written by William Peterman and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2000 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores the promise and limits of bottom-up, grass-roots strategies of community organizing, development, and planning as blueprints for successful revitalization and maintenance of urban neighborhoods. Peterman proposes conditions that need to be met for bottom-up strategies to succeed. Successful neighborhood development depends not only on local actions, but also on the ability of local groups to marshal resources and political will at levels above that of the neighborhood itself. While he supports community-based initiatives, he argues that there are limits to what can be accomplished exclusively at the grassroots level, where most efforts fail"--Back cover.

Download or read book Community Planning written by Phil Heywood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This key planning textbook on designing healthy and sustainable communities informs planners about community life and the processes of planning and equips them with the essential knowledge and skills they need to organise change and improve the quality of urban living. The author examines the impacts of social and economic change on community life and organization and explores ways in which these changes can be planned and managed. Community planning is presented as a means to balance and integrate beneficial change with the maintenance of valued cultural traditions and life styles. This involves bringing together fields of study and practice including urban and regional planning, design, communication, housing, community organization, employment, transport, and governance. Links drawn between personal values, human activities, physical spaces and societal governance assist this process of synthesis. Establishing a common vocabulary to discuss planning - for urban and regional planners, including health planners; and open space planners - enables both students and practitioners to work with each other and with those for whom they provide services to create stronger, healthier and more sustainable communities. The aims and roles of community planning are explored and the key planning operations are explained, including the phases and applications of community planning method; the planning and location of community facilities; the roles of design in shaping responsive community spaces; and the capacity of different types of community governance to improve the relations between citizens and societies. The book is organized into two main parts: after the first three chapters have established the interests and scope of community planning, the next six each moves from an account of issues and theoretical concerns, through a review of case studies, to summaries of leading practice. This positive approach is intended to encourage readers to develop their own capacities for effective participation and action. The concluding chapter draws together the contributions of preceding ones to demonstrate the integrity of the community planning process Supplementary website: www.wiley.com/go/heywood

Book Social Development and Planning in Asia

Download or read book Social Development and Planning in Asia written by Ralph Pieris and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While probing into the economics of development and planning and evolving the strategy for social transformation, professional economists often lose sight of the ultimate goalman. The firsthand knowledge and experience of the human situation are tabulated and computerised, and then they reappear as abstract ‘models’ and formal ‘indicators’. In his Social Development and Planning in Asia Dr. Ralph Pieris salvages this human factor that often tends to disappear behind ‘significant statistics’. Unlike the alienated technocrats, whose profession is to devise strategies for economic development, Dr. Pieris stresses the human dimension of all socio-economic planning. The papers included in this volume were prepared during 1951-75; they trace not only the history of the socio-economic development in the underdeveloped Asian countries, but also delineate the dialectical relationship between the philosophy of development and the ‘social-man’. This vein of concern for the human situation, though running through all his writings, is methodically formulated in Part IV of the book — “The Problem of Human Relationships: A Grammer of Sociology”. In whatever he has written during the past quarter century, Dr. Ralph Pieris is rightfully confident that he has pre-empted Gunnar Mydal’s Prognosis (1970).
