Book Soaring Where Christ Has Led

Download or read book Soaring Where Christ Has Led written by Richard Avery and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believing that Christian worship should be both exciting and stimulating and respectful of God and worshipers and liturgical traditions, Dick Avery and Don Marsh have put their considerable talents together to bring you ideas and music that make worship soar. As you read these groundbreaking ideas tailored to the seasons of the church year, you'll find yourself saying, "Yes! YES! YES!" -- and you'll be eager to put them in place with your congregation. Everything Avery and Marsh describe in this remarkable volume has been done successfully in their congregation at the regular Sunday morning service of worship, so you will find no off-the-wall suggestions pushed for mere novelty's sake or just to "shake things up." Rather, every principle, every suggestion, every idea has a purpose and goal befitting the Gospel and designed to help worshipers tune in to the mighty Lord of All. With all of this plus several samples of original Avery & Marsh music, written especially for Sunday morning worship, Soaring Where Christ Has Led is a resource you will use week after week in planning worship services that delight congregations, honor God with momentous expressions of joy, and teach the way of Christ in today's world. Nationally renowned for their creative worship celebrations, Richard Avery and Donald Marsh were colleagues in ministry for 40 years at the First Presbyterian Church in Port Jervis, New York, where Avery served as pastor and Marsh as choirmaster (directing 3 choirs) and director of arts (producing 83 major plays and working with educational projects). They have collaborated in composing hymns, songs, and anthems, of which more than 150 have been published. During the last 30 years they have led regional and national church assemblies, conferences, and workshops on worship, music, and drama for many denominations and in virtually all 50 states. A native of California, Avery is a graduate of the University of Redlands and Union Theological Seminary in New York. Marsh has bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Houston, and worked for 17 years in New York's music and theater world as a composer, choreographer, pianist, and actor. Avery and Marsh continue their collaboration in composing for the church and in leading special liturgical and musical events while living in retirement in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Book The Lyrical Theology of Charles Wesley Expanded Edition

Download or read book The Lyrical Theology of Charles Wesley Expanded Edition written by S T Kimbrough Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised with Comprehensive Scriptural Index to Wesley's Poetry The theology of Charles Wesley is expressed primarily in hymns and sacred poems-that is, in a literary and liturgical form of art. Wesley's theological concerns, as seen through his hymns and poems, include inquiries into the meaning of the church's sacred rites, festivals, and seasons (Holy Communion, Baptism, Advent, Christmas, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost), and a host of other theological concerns, such as conversion, sanctification, perfection, holiness, grace, and love. These theological concerns are spread throughout his repertory of over 9,000 hymns and poems. There are two primary purposes of this volume: first, to prepare the reader to read Wesley's poetry, given the plethora of literary, theological, and societal influences on his thought and writing; and second, to bring together a collection of his hymns and sacred poems that are representative of his theological perspectives. Thereby the reader is given the opportunity to become better equipped to grasp the meaning of Wesley's profound lyrical theology and its implications for contemporary theology and life.

Book Soaring Higher

Download or read book Soaring Higher written by Philip C. Eyster and published by Sacred Grounds. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book that will take you soaring - with information and inspiration. But first it will bring you down to earth. When I read the first chapter I thought, "I'm glad I wasn't part of Phil's team" - with the snakes, the disposals, the often terrible food. It's not about glamorous travels. Then when I read chapter two I thought, "I wish I could have been there" - to see God at work. Here is the moving, real, down to earth story of how God led one man to make a difference - not with glamor, but with grit and grace, and not for a year or two but a lifetime of faithful ministry. I wish every young evangelist could read it. Leighton Ford, President Leighton Ford Ministries. Charlotte, North Carolina. Every man or woman who answers God's call to ministry comes to the altar with some idea of where they would like to serve, whether it is a glistening cathedral, a humble country church, or somewhere in the mission field. Raised on the teachings of men such as J. Hudson Taylor and C.S. Spurgeon, Dr. Philip C. Eyster, believed his calling was to be an evangelist but he didn't know how or where God would lead him. Eventually, God led him all over the world wherever there was need for the light of the Gospel. Through preaching, teaching, physical labor, and medical clinics Dr. and his organization have been demonstrating God's love and healing power wherever there was need and a little space to meet the need. Over the years they have criss-crossed continents, planting churches, building orphanages, providing eyeglasses, and giving sanctuary for those shunned by society or victimized by poverty and perversity. These reflections collected over 50 years show the reality of field ministry: the humor, the tears, the dangers, and the miracles.

Book Cascades of Violence

Download or read book Cascades of Violence written by John Braithwaite and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the cascading of water, violence and nonviolence can cascade down from commanding heights of power (as in waterfalls), up from powerless peripheries, and can undulate to spread horizontally (flowing from one space to another). As with containing water, conflict cannot be contained without asking crucial questions about which variables might cause it to cascade from the top-down, bottom up and from the middle-out. The book shows how violence cascades from state to state. Empirical research has shown that nations with a neighbor at war are more likely to have a civil war themselves (Sambanis 2001). More importantly in the analysis of this book, war cascades from hot spot to hot spot within and between states (Autesserre 2010, 2014). The key to understanding cascades of hot spots is in the interaction between local and macro cleavages and alliances (Kalyvas 2006). The analysis exposes the folly of asking single-level policy questions like do the benefits and costs of a regime change in Iraq justify an invasion? We must also ask what other violence might cascade from an invasion of Iraq? The cascades concept is widespread in the physical and biological sciences with cascades in geology, particle physics and the globalization of contagion. The past two decades has seen prominent and powerful applications of the cascades idea to the social sciences (Sunstein 1997; Gladwell 2000; Sikkink 2011). In his discussion of ethnic violence, James Rosenau (1990) stressed that the image of turbulence developed by mathematicians and physicists could provide an important basis for understanding the idea of bifurcation and related ideas of complexity, chaos, and turbulence in complex systems. He classified the bifurcated systems in contemporary world politics as the multicentric system and the statecentric system. Each of these affects the others in multiple ways, at multiple levels, and in ways that make events enormously hard to predict (Rosenau 1990, 2006). He replaced the idea of events with cascades to describe the event structures that 'gather momentum, stall, reverse course, and resume anew as their repercussions spread among whole systems and subsystems' (1990: 299). Through a detailed analysis of case studies in South Asia, that built on John Braithwaite's twenty-five year project Peacebuilding Compared, and coding of conflicts in different parts of the globe, we expand Rosenau's concept of global turbulence and images of cascades. In the cascades of violence in South Asia, we demonstrate how micro-events such as localized riots, land-grabbing, pervasive militarization and attempts to assassinate political leaders are linked to large scale macro-events of global politics. We argue in order to prevent future conflicts there is a need to understand the relationships between history, structures and agency; interest, values and politics; global and local factors and alliances.
