Seems the world did end, though how and why are something of a mystery. Now, Jason—and five hundred million other humans—are in orbit around an Earthlike world that is abundant in natural resources and totally untamed. For the newly awakened humans, this is a chance to start society with a clean slate and a bright future. For Jason, who has knocked about aimlessly in several different careers in his Earth life, it’s an opportunity to unleash his creativity and ambition and see what he can really do.
Download or read book My Dad and Me written by Larry King and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yogi Berra’s dad, an immigrant from northern Italy, didn’t see the point of American sports, but taught Yogi to keep his word and always be on time. Mario Cuomo’s father seemed diminutive (“Maybe he was five foot six if his heels were not worn”), but he once led Mario and his brother in a herculean, nearly impossible effort to hoist and replant a downed 40-foot-tall blue spruce. C. Everett Koop’s dad imparted to his son the crucial difference between buying something and affording something. And from her famous father, Danny, Marlo Thomas learned the wisdom of forgiveness when he told her, “I do not hunch my back with yesterday.” For My Dad and Me, Larry King asked more than 120 celebrated and successful people about their favorite memories of their fathers. Their recollections are rich with life lessons, large and small: Some are truly insightful and wise, some are hilarious, some are pragmatic, but each is a genuine reflection of the priceless gift of fatherhood. It’s one thing, after all, to be told about such virtues as honesty and integrity, hard work and perseverance, gentleness and strength. It’s quite another to see them living, or even sometimes faltering, within someone you love. As warm and funny, reassuring and surprising as dads themselves, My Dad and Me not only celebrates fatherhood but also offers some candid glimpses behind the public images of well-known men and women from Donald Trump and President George H.W. Bush to Patricia Heaton and Bill Gates. Larry King presents a moving and revealing collection of inspirational stories about fathers—and the life lessons they teach—from a host of famous men and women, including: Chinua Achebe, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Helen Gurley Brown, President George H. W. Bush, Bob Costas, Alan Dershowitz, Phyllis Diller, Hugh Downs, Bill Gates, Ira Glass, Derek Jeter, Randy Johnson, Don Mattingly, Kevin Nealon, Kurt Russell, Bob Saget, Ryan Seacrest, Marlo Thomas, Alex Trebek, Donald Trump, Al Yankovic, And many more . . .
Download or read book Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession written by Sarah Lamb and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the North American public has pursued an inspirational vision of successful aging—striving through medical technique and individual effort to eradicate the declines, vulnerabilities, and dependencies previously commonly associated with old age. On the face of it, this bold new vision of successful, healthy, and active aging is highly appealing. But it also rests on a deep cultural discomfort with aging and being old. The contributors to Successful Aging as a Contemporary Obsession explore how the successful aging movement is playing out across five continents. Their chapters investigate a variety of people, including Catholic nuns in the United States; Hindu ashram dwellers; older American women seeking plastic surgery; aging African-American lesbians and gay men in the District of Columbia; Chicago home health care workers and their aging clients; Mexican men foregoing Viagra; dementia and Alzheimer sufferers in the United States and Brazil; and aging policies in Denmark, Poland, India, China, Japan, and Uganda. This book offers a fresh look at a major cultural and public health movement of our time, questioning what has become for many a taken-for-granted goal—aging in a way that almost denies aging itself.

Download or read book Leavin a Testimony written by Patsy Cravens and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This oral and pictorial history chronicles the lives and separate worlds of black and white communities in Jim Crow era Colorado County, TX. First settled by Stephen F. Austin’s colonists in the early nineteenth century, Colorado County has deep roots in Texas history. Mainly rural and agrarian until late in the twentieth century, it was a cotton-growing region whose population was evenly divided between blacks and whites. These life-long neighbors led separate and unequal lives, memories of which still linger today. To preserve those memories, Patsy Cravens began interviewing and photographing the older residents of Colorado County in the 1980s. In this book, Cravens presents photographs and recollections of the last generation, black and white, who grew up in the era of Jim Crow segregation. And they have engrossing stories to tell. They recall grinding poverty and rollicking fun in the Great Depression, losing crops and livestock to floods, working for the WPA, romances gone wrong and love gone right, dirty dancing, church and faith, sharecropping, quilting, raising children, racism and bigotry, and even the horrific lynching of two African American teenagers in 1935. These stories reveal an amazing resiliency and generosity of spirit, despite the hardships that have filled most of their lives. They also capture a now lost rural way of life that was once common across the South.

Download or read book Of Wizards and Angels written by Charles Louis Braai and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds, I was Beethovens prized pupil, can believe it. Unfortunately I had to quit him for reasons not concerning music. It was really quite silly. I was supposed to be protecting my good name. You see, it was rumored that the maestro, Beethoven, was a womanizer and while conducting orchestras he also conducted many affairs with his young female students. In those times, although mostly behind their backs, some men and even some women were referred to as libertines. Of course any man as emotional as Beethoven had to be romantically exotic but I didnt consider him a libertine; it was just that young women threw themselves at him and he used the opportunities. The saddest part was this remarkable man was almost deaf; in later years he became almost completely and totally deaf. Yet this man was such a genius, just by reading the written notes, he could hear the music inside his head. Often, he laid his hands on the piano as I played. At times, when I played, particularly when we were alone, after hed closed the piano, thus containing the sound, hed than lay his head down on the piano; by doing so, with his temple held tightly on the lid, it enabled him to hear it fully the way it was meant to be heard. This was done only prudently and only witnessed by certain people, as he was embarrassed and at first, not wanting to admit being deaf. No matter how much relief Id get by forgetting the music I never would forget it on purpose. That music is a part of me, more so than my arms and limbs even; the music is more part of me than my perceived beauty or my Immortality.

Book excerpt: THIS POETIC BOOK This is a book of poems to give you a lift, And it's my appreciation of God's gift. For I enjoy writing poetry just for fun; I'll write about anything or anyone. I don't care what the subject might be; I'll turn it around until it suits me. I hope you find this book to be a joy for you; Then, I have accomplished what I wanted to do. I'm writing this book with friends and relation in mind; I wanted it to be in poetry, making the words rhyme. I'm certainly not writing for fame or even glory; I just want to tell about things in a poetic story. This book will hopefully inspire, make you laugh or cry; Being so grateful, I want to encourage others, so I'll try. The Webb of Life is poems of people and events important to me; Look at your life and perhaps you, too, God's blessings will see. This book turned out to be a lot more than I had planned; Now it'll be wonderful to get it into some other hands. For I want you to remember when I'm dead and gone, That, hopefully, this poetic book will carry on.
