Book Necessary Death

    Book Details:
  • Author : Preston Fassel
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2023-10-31
  • ISBN : 0757324886
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Necessary Death written by Preston Fassel and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on very real and practical commentary, life experience, and occasionally, tongue-in-cheek-misfortunes of horror legends, Necessary Death explores how the horror genre, its motifs and characters, offer individuals a unique opportunity for insight and understanding of their own lives. Necessary Death looks back on several iconic horror films and finds that maybe the genre wasn’t ever really just about men in hockey masks chasing good looking coeds through old dark houses. Even a cursory examination of the horror convention will reveal a plethora of stories from recovering addicts, survivors of trauma and sexual abuse, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and minorities. So what, then, can this genre so concerned with death teach us about being alive—and how can we apply those lessons in our day-to-day existence? Using some of the most quintessential movies in the genre, Chris Grosso and Preston Fassel invite readers to an in-depth examination of the human condition—its fears, anxieties, hopes, joys, sorrows, and everything in-between—and how it’s all grist for our personal and collective evolutionary mill. A hallmark of the genre is how horror films force their characters to find some semblance of inner strength and wherewithal in order to stand up to the monster, ghost, or villain that is trying to take their lives. Through fascinating discussion of this and other elements, Fassel and Grosso relate these films’ dark subject matter and characters to real world issues people face every day, showing that there’s something deep within us that, if even just metaphorically, can relate to the pain in these stories. This sharp analysis is complimented by exercises that prompt readers to consider gratitude, forgiveness, determination, and bravery in the face of adversity. An unusual mix of film study and self-help, Necessary Death might surprise or even shock readers, but it will also enlighten, educate, and most importantly hearten those looking for an unexpected source of inspiration.

Book NOW I ASK YOU

Download or read book NOW I ASK YOU written by Dr. Sherry L. Meinberg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of my family and many friends are scattered in various states or countries. So when I die, they needn’t gather in California for my funeral, as I do not plan to have one. My goal is to have my lawyer, or a friend, send everyone I know, a copy of my memoir/advice book—NOW I ASK YOU—to save everyone the hassle of traveling on short notice. It is not worth their time, effort, and inconvenience, nor the money involved. Throughout my 84 years (so far), I have garnered tons of personal experiences—good, bad, and so-so. As such, I have chosen 120 subjects to share. Each section has three parts: It starts with NOW I ASK YOU questions and/or advice for the reader, then my personal story, followed by inspirational quotations, both old and new, from the famous, the not so famous, and the anonymous, pertaining to that particular experience. Few individuals have heard all of these tales, so many will be new to them. (I have actually heard friends become angry, when I would tell one of my stories to others, and they hadn’t heard it before. How weird is that?) Although I tried to place my memories in chronological order, the reader can dive in anywhere, as each story can stand alone. I hope readers will smile or laugh or cringe at some of my difficult, unpleasant, funny, or embarrassing experiences. This 24th book of mine is just my way of leaving a historical record, of sorts, for my family, as well as a roadmap for friends, neighbors, former students, and other readers, to learn from my failures and successes (always a teacher at heart!). Understand your life as a kaleidoscope of experiences that move and change. —L.D. Thompson We should learn from the mistakes of others. We don’t have time to make them all ourselves. —Groucho Marx

Book excerpt: A friendly and affirming collection of 52 secular essays with interactive journaling prompts for those seeking spiritual connection and comfort outside the confines of organized religion. In Sermons on the Couch, Cindy Gentry offers weekly sermons that meet people where they are—whether religious or spiritual, agnostic or atheist. Instead of references to deities, her lessons are placed in the context of a force in the Universe. Instead of Biblical quotes, she uses the wise words of celebrities, scientists, poets, and thinkers. Rather than traditional hymns, she closes each sermon with suggested popular songs from across genres. At the end of each Sermon, she offers journal questions to guide further contemplation of the weekly topic. For example, the book’s opening sermon is titled “Resolutions.” To avoid the self-criticism that comes from not following through on resolutions, Cindy suggests reframing them into more general goals such as becoming a happier, healthier person, improving relationships, and making the world a better place. Journal questions prompt reflection on past experiences with resolutions and what the reader might do differently this year, and the hymn selection for this sermon is New Beginning, by Tracy Chapman. Writes Cindy, “So, that is my mission. To enjoy a laugh and a song, but most of all, to remind people each week, despite the crazy ups and downs of life, that they are perfect in their imperfections, the Universe loves them unconditionally, and that we can hold on to each other.”

The truth is in what’s said and in what is left out.”—ALA Booklist (starred review) Marion Blumenthal Lazan’s unforgettable and acclaimed memoir recalls the devastating years that shaped her childhood. Following Hitler’s rise to power, the Blumenthal family—father, mother, Marion, and her brother, Albert—were trapped in Nazi Germany. For the next six and a half years the Blumenthals were forced to live in refugee, transit, and prison camps, including Westerbork in Holland and Bergen-Belsen in Germany, before finally making it to the United States. Their story is one of horror and hardship, but it is also a story of courage, hope, and the will to survive. Book Run to the Finish

Download or read book Run to the Finish written by Amanda Brooks and published by Hachette Go. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiration and practical tips for runners who prioritize enjoyment over pace and embrace their place as an "average" runner In her first book, popular runner blogger Amanda Brooks lays out the path to finding greater fulfillment in running for those who consider themselves "middle of the pack runners" -- they're not trying to win Boston (or even qualify for Boston); they just want to get strong and stay injury-free so they can continue to enjoy running. Run to the Finish is not your typical running book. While it is filled with useful strategic training advice throughout, at its core, it is about embracing your place in the middle of the pack with humor and learning to love the run you've got without comparing yourself to other runners. Mixing practical advice like understanding the discomfort vs. pain, the mental side of running, and movements to treat the most common injuries with more playful elements such as "Favorite hilarious marathon signs" and "Weird Thoughts We all Have at the Start Line," Brooks is the down-to-earth, inspiring guide for everyone who wants to be happier with their run.
