Book Small Specimen Test Techniques for Estimating the Tensile Property Degradation of Mod 9Cr 1Mo Steel on Thermal Aging

Download or read book Small Specimen Test Techniques for Estimating the Tensile Property Degradation of Mod 9Cr 1Mo Steel on Thermal Aging written by V. Karthik and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degradation in mechanical properties of modified (mod) 9Cr-1Mo steel on thermal aging at 923 K has been studied using the small specimen test techniques?shear-punch and ball-indentation tests. Small volumes of material required for these test techniques make them unique tools for the assessment of service related degradation and failure analysis of structural components. A variety of heat treated microstructural conditions of mod 9Cr-1Mo steel is generated on which both conventional tensile test and shear-punch/ball-indentation tests are carried out. The relationship between conventional tensile properties and small specimen test results is established from these standardization experiments. Small specimens of Mod 9Cr-1Mo steel in the thermally aged conditions are tested using both shear punch and ball-indentation techniques and the tensile property changes are determined. Both these tests identically reflect and quantify the changes in the tensile properties with aging time which correlates well with the microstructural changes observed using optical and electron microscopic studies.

Book The Influence of Thermal Aging on the Microstructure and Fatigue Properties of Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel

Download or read book The Influence of Thermal Aging on the Microstructure and Fatigue Properties of Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of elevated-temperature low cycle fatigue and creep-fatigue tests are for one heat of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel in the normalized and tempered condition, after pre-aging 50,000 h at 538 and 593C, and after pre-aging for 75,000 h at 538C. These data show that pre-aging reduces the low cycle fatigue and creepfatigue lives in comparison to unaged material. The magnitude of these reductions are discussed along with the impact of pre-aging on the creep-fatigue damage diagrams. The effect of environment on creep-fatigue life of unaged modified 9Cr-1Mo steels is also addressed. Transmission electron microscopy explains changes in mechanical properties due to thermal aging. In the unaged alloy, TEM shows that dynamic recovery/recrystallization is occurring after significant strain-induced dislocation hardening around a stationary and stable array of as-tempered carbides during creep-fatigue. In contrast creep-fatigue testing of the pre-aged alloy produced a much coarser cellular subgrain structure and dislocation recovery without recrystallization. Aging causes as-tempered carbide dissolution and/or reprecipitation together with additional precipitation of Laves (Fe2Mo) phase, which removes some of the precipitate-strengthening effects, and depletes solid-solution hardening effects on the dislocation networks and subgrain boundary structures.

Book The Effect of Long term Aging on the Impact Properties of Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel

Download or read book The Effect of Long term Aging on the Impact Properties of Modified 9Cr 1Mo Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Charpy impact and room-temperature tensile properties of two heats of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel have been examined after aging at temperatures from 482 to 704C for times up to 75,000 h. In general, aging at lower temperatures (482, 538, or 593C) resulted in little change in the room-temperature tensile properties, but rapid increases in the transition temperature, with the greatest increase for an aging time of 25,000 h. The upper-shelf energy level decreased, reaching a minimum at 25,000 h, followed by recovery at 50,000-h aging. At higher aging temperatures (649 and 704C) there was little change in the transition temperatures, but significant softening at room temperature, and large increases in the upper-shelf energy.

Book Estimation of Toughness Degradation by Microhardness and Small Punch Tests

Download or read book Estimation of Toughness Degradation by Microhardness and Small Punch Tests written by M. Eto and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microhardness and small punch (SP) tests were conducted to improve the reliability of evaluating the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) shift caused by aging (thermal aging, neutron irradiation, cold rolling) using several model alloys (Fe-0.15C alloys and 21⁄4Cr-1Mo steels). Although evaluation of DBTT by the SP test was good overall, intergranular brittleness could not be detected by SP-DBTT measurement only. By combining other measurements like fractographic observation, however, material degradation can be better evaluated.

Book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing

Download or read book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing written by D. Francois and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Charpy to Present Impact Testing contains 52 peer-reviewed papers selected from those presented at the Charpy Centenary Conference held in Poitiers, France, 2-5 October 2001. The name of Charpy remains associated with impact testing on notched specimens. At a time when many steam engines exploded, engineers were preoccupied with studying the resistance of steels to impact loading. The Charpy test has provided invaluable indications on the impact properties of materials. It revealed the brittle ductile transition of ferritic steels. The Charpy test is able to provide more quantitative results by instrumenting the striker, which allows the evolution of the applied load during the impact to be determined. The Charpy test is of great importance to evaluate the embrittlement of steels by irradiation in nuclear reactors. Progress in computer programming has allowed for a computer model of the test to be developed; a difficult task in view of its dynamic, three dimensional, adiabatic nature. Together with precise observations of the processes of fracture, this opens the possibility of transferring quantitatively the results of Charpy tests to real components. This test has also been extended to materials other than steels, and is also frequently used to test polymeric materials. Thus the Charpy test is a tool of great importance and is still at the root of a number of investigations; this is the reason why it was felt that the centenary of the Charpy test had to be celebrated. The Société Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux decided to organise an international conference which was put under the auspices of the European Society for the Integrity of Structures (ESIS). This Charpy Centenary Conference (CCC 2001) was held in Poitiers, at Futuroscope in October 2001. More than 150 participants from 17 countries took part in the discussions and about one hundred presentations were given. An exhibition of equipment showed, not only present day testing machines, but also one of the first Charpy pendulums, brought all the way from Imperial College in London. From Charpy to Present Impact Testing puts together a number of significant contributions. They are classified into 6 headings: •Keynote lectures,•Micromechanisms,•Polymers,•Testing procedures,•Applications,•Modelling.

Book Physics Of Creep And Creep Resistant Alloys

Download or read book Physics Of Creep And Creep Resistant Alloys written by F R N Nabarro and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its approach, this introduction to the physics of creep concentrates on the physical principles underlying observed phenomena. As such it provides a resource for graduate students in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics and chemistry as well as researchers in other fields. Following a brief mathematical treatment, the authors introduce creep phenomena together with some empirical laws and observations. The mechanisms of creep and diffusion under varying experimental conditions are subsequently analysed and developed. The second half of the text considers alloying in greater detail as well as exploring the structure and properties of superalloys and stress effects in these materials.

Book Engineering Materials 2

Download or read book Engineering Materials 2 written by Michael F. Ashby and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a thorough explanation of the basic properties of materials; of how these can be controlled by processing; of how materials are formed, joined and finished; and of the chain of reasoning that leads to a successful choice of material for a particular application. The materials covered are grouped into four classes: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Each class is studied in turn, identifying the families of materials in the class, the microstructural features, the processes or treatments used to obtain a particular structure and their design applications. The text is supplemented by practical case studies and example problems with answers, and a valuable programmed learning course on phase diagrams.
