Book Small Districts Big Problems

Download or read book Small Districts Big Problems written by Richard A. Schmuck and published by Corwin. This book was released on 1992-07-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this volume visited 25 small school districts in the US to meet, observe and interview students, teachers, principals and administrators. Here they present research that connects with reality. Through their fascinating description of the physical and educational landscape, the authors capture life in nonurban schools `as it is', and present information that is brutally honest. They provide the beginnings of a road map to help small, nonurban districts and communities begin their own journey on the road to better schools.

Book Small Rural School Districts in Nebraska

Download or read book Small Rural School Districts in Nebraska written by Michael R. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the problems faced by small, rural Nebraska school districts. For this study, 15 possible challenges were identified (a) student enrollment, (b) instructional programs, (c) instructional support services, (d) extra curricular activities, (e) hiring and retaining administrative staff, (f) hiring and retaining teaching staff, (g) hiring and retaining non-certified staff, (h) building and grounds, (I) transportation services, (j) food services, (k) school finances, (l) student assessment, (m) accountability school performance, (n) family support, and (o) community support. There were no data on this topic for the state of Nebraska. The case for this study involved all 28 school districts identified as "very sparse" according to the Nebraska state aid statute as of 2007-08. The participants in this study were the superintendents of these school districts. The survey instrument used to collect data included the 15 challenges facing small, rural Nebraska school districts. A five point Likert-scale was used for each challenge from 1--a minor/no challenge to 5--a major challenge. Participants in the study were asked to respond to each of the challenge items from the perspective of their own school district by circling the number in their view that described their school district challenge. After the return of the survey, the author contacted each superintendent by telephone and conducted interviews using open-ended questions to further perspectives on the survey items. The results indicated the top challenges for small, rural Nebraska schools were school finance, student enrollment, hiring and retaining teaching staff, student assessment, and accountability school performance. Although each challenge was difficult on its own, the challenges overlapped each other and superintendents were not able to manage one challenge without addressing others. Small rural school districts face many challenges that require careful consideration and cooperation involving every community member and were impacted by some factors that they have no control over. Small, rural, school district superintendents must think ahead with finances, stay in contact with legislative actions, and keep an open mind to changing technology that can impact the education of students. Book Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy

Download or read book Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy written by Helen F. Ladd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sponsored by the Association for Education Finance and Policy (AEFP), the second edition of this groundbreaking handbook assembles in one place the existing research-based knowledge in education finance and policy, with particular attention to elementary and secondary education. Chapters from the first edition have been fully updated and revised to reflect current developments, new policies, and recent research. With new chapters on teacher evaluation, alternatives to traditional public schooling, and cost-benefit analysis, this volume provides a readily available current resource for anyone involved in education finance and policy. The Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy traces the evolution of the field from its initial focus on school inputs and revenue sources used to finance these inputs, to a focus on educational outcomes and the larger policies used to achieve them. Chapters show how decision making in school finance inevitably interacts with decisions about governance, accountability, equity, privatization, and other areas of education policy. Because a full understanding of important contemporary issues requires inputs from a variety of perspectives, the Handbook draws on contributors from a number of disciplines. Although many of the chapters cover complex, state-of-the-art empirical research, the authors explain key concepts in language that non-specialists can understand. This comprehensive, balanced, and accessible resource provides a wealth of factual information, data, and wisdom to help educators improve the quality of education in the United States.

Download or read book Managing Smallness written by Deborah L. Inman Freitas and published by Eric Clearinghouse on Rural. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a mail survey of over 100 rural school administrators in 34 states, this handbook outlines common problems and successful strategies in the financial management of rural, small school districts. Major problems are related to revenue and cash flow, increasing expenditures, providing quality education programs, and staffing to handle the responsibilities of fiscal management. Education funding is especially vulnerable to state politics, and many financial problems of rural school districts stem from state-aid funding formulas that favor larger urban districts. Some of the most crucial budgetary concerns are rising labor costs, the cost of new technology, and additional curricular mandates from state and federal governments. Successful strategies are listed for dealing with budget concerns and making the funding formula work, and specific examples are described. In particular, the 4-day school week provides some unique solutions to the financial and instructional problems of rural districts. Recommendations are also listed for personnel management, interdistrict cooperation, communication, and "do not do's." Also discussed are the future outlook for rural equity issues, rural school improvement programs, the role of rural education in community development, and educational cooperation. This booklet contains 40 references. Appendices provide brief annotated bibliographies on budgeting, general rural education sources, and recent relevant ERIC/CRESS digests. (SV)

Book The Changing American Countryside

Download or read book The Changing American Countryside written by Emery N. Castle and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on rural America, to the extent that it exists, has largely been written by urban-based scholars perpetuating out-of-date notions and stereotypes or by those who see little difference between rural and agricultural concerns. As a result, the real rural America remains much misunderstood, neglected, or ignored by scholars and policymakers alike. In response, Emery Castle offers The Changing American Countryside, a volume that will forever change how we look at this important subject. Castle brings together the writings of eminent scholars from several disciplines and varying backgrounds to take a fresh and comprehensive look at the "forgotten hinterlands." These authors examine the role of non-metropolitan people and places in the economic life of our nation and cover such diverse issues as poverty, industry, the environment, education, family, social problems, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, government, public policy, and regional diversity The authors are especially effective in demonstrating why rural America is so much more than just agriculture. It is in fact highly diverse, complex, and interdependent with urban America and the international market place. Most major rural problems, they contend, simply cannot be effectively addressed in isolation from their urban and international connections. To do so is misguided and even hazardous, when one-fourth of our population and ninety-seven per cent of our land area is rural. Together these writings not only provide a new and more realistic view of rural life and public policy, but also suggest how the field of rural studies can greatly enrich our understanding of national life.

Book Schooling in Disadvantaged Communities

Download or read book Schooling in Disadvantaged Communities written by Carmen Mills and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a study of one secondary school located in a disadvantaged community in Australia, this book provides a different perspective on what it means to ‘play the game’ of schooling. Drawing on the perspectives of teachers, parents and students, this book is a window through which to explore the possibilities of schooling in disadvantaged communities. The authors contend that teachers, parents and students themselves are all involved in the game of reproducing disadvantage in schooling, but similarly, they can play a part in opening up opportunities for change to enhance learning for marginalised students. Rather than only attempting to transform students, teachers should be also be concerned to transform schooling; to provide educational opportunities that transform the life experiences of and open up opportunities for all young people, especially those disadvantaged by poverty and marginalised by difference. The book is also designed to stimulate understanding of the work of Bourdieu as well as of a Bourdieuian approach to research. Seeing transformative potential in his theoretical constructs, it airs the possibility that schools can be more than mere reproducers of society.

Book Small School Governance in Texas

Download or read book Small School Governance in Texas written by Donnie C. Snider and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the governance issues in school districts with 500 or less students; Methodology: An online survey was constructed using items from the National School Board Survey. The survey was sent to the Texas school board presidents of districts with 500 or less students. The survey had five conceptual organizers: school board elections, school board service, school superintendent, policy issues and district/board president demography. A 40% return rate was achieved; Results: The results were reported as key findings by the conceptual organizers. Key findings include: 77% of board presidents were male; 90% of board presidents had a positive relationship with the superintendent. The average length of service for a superintendent was 4.3 years; 95% believed their district was prepared to meet the No Child Left Behind Standards; and, 93% of board presidents were Caucasian. Conclusions: All school boards are not the same. There are elemental differences between large, medium and small school districts; and Recommendations: Our lack of knowledge leaves us ill equipped to address the challenges small school boards face. Additional research is necessary to add to the body of literature and our understanding of governance as it applies to small school boards. School Board Survey Analysis Addendum is also included. (Contains 42 tables.).

Book Small Schools Large Districts

Download or read book Small Schools Large Districts written by Patrice M. Iatarola and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school reform is currently at the top of the education policy making agenda after years of stagnant achievement and persistent racial and income test score gaps. Although a number of reforms offer some promise of improving U.S. high schools, small schools have emerged as the favored reform model, especially in urban areas, garnering substantial financial investments from both the private and public sectors. In the decade following 1993, the number of high schools in New York City nearly doubled, as new "small" schools opened and large high schools were reorganized into smaller learning communities. The promise of small schools to improve academic engagement, school culture, and, ultimately, student performance has drawn many supporters. However, educators, policy makers, and researchers have raised concerns about the unintended consequences of these new small schools and the possibility that students "left behind" in large, established high schools are incurring negative impacts.
