Book Pained Screams from Camps

  • Author : Aisling Reid
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2024-06-17
  • ISBN : 3111297144
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Pained Screams from Camps written by Aisling Reid and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detention camps exceed the juridical concept of punishment and crime. This book comprises two parts: 1. a collected volume that discusses camps not as something of the past, but as a paradigmatic political space in which ordinary law is completely suspended, and 2. an Italian-English parallel text of the war diary of an Italian prisoner during his confinement at the Stalag X-B internment camp near Sandbostel from 1943–1945. 1. The Human Condition of Exception: Collected Essays Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace Written in Italian and English, the essays collected in this volume explore the issue of camps and suffering from various perspectives, including philosophical inquiry, literary analysis, historical description and legal assessment. As Agamben suggests, the camp embodies the state of exception. A dehumanising camp life will therefore emerge every time such a structure is created. What happens in camps exceeds the juridical concept of punishment, as well as that of crime. Prisoners are faced with a ‘useless’ pain (Levinas) as it is not the expiation of a fault. Prisoners attempt to describe their extreme suffering through their diaries. Their experience, however, cannot be entirely communicated. Even their screams, which express humanity at the extreme limit of its un-power, are silenced. Given the recent popularity of right-wing politics, as well as the centenary of Mussolini’s march on Rome, such research is more urgent than ever. The book will appeal to readers with an interest in philosophy as well as Irish history scholars studying internment during Partition and The Troubles in Northern Ireland. 2. Aldo Quarisa’s Diary: An Italian-English Edition Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace. Transcribed and with a preface by Galileo Sartor. Translation of the diary by Aisling Reid (Italian-English). In 1943, Aldo Quarisa worked at a military school in Florence, where he taught literature. In October of that year, one month after Italy had surrendered to the Allied forces, the Italians declared war on the Germans. In Florence, the German occupiers responded quickly, by arresting and deporting people with military connections to numerous concentration camps in Austria. Quite suddenly, Aldo was detained and deported through a network of camps, including Benjaminovo and the Stalag X-B internment camp, near the Austrian village of Sandbostel. For two years, he found himself imprisoned alongside other Italians, including the celebrated journalist Giovannino Guareschi, who secretly kept a diary that was later published as his Diario Clandestino 1943–1945 in 1946. Much like Guareschi, Aldo also kept a diary and excerpts are published here in both Italian and English for the first time. The diary describes in unprecedented detail the monotony of camp life, the cruelty of the guards and the prisoners’ struggle to survive. The text is an important document that preserves the memory and voices of all those who suffered during the war and will inevitably be of interest to readers with an interest in World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See the world through a patient’s eyes…from other side of illness. Pause to see the world beyond the scientific and clinical. Each chapter in the book provides a brief memoir recounting an experience of illness, written either by the patient, a member of the patient’s family, or an advocate for the patient within the medical, legal, or judicial system. As you share their experiences, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the importance of holistic, patient-centered care. Reviews of the 1st Edition… “...powerful stories...shed light on care giving, spiritual growth, altered self-concept and other aspects of chronic illness.”—ALS Newsletter on the Web “...speak about the most important things clearly, strongly as possible...to do anything else is precious waste of time.”—UMass Magazine “...these accounts...are deep reflections about living with afflictions, relationships, and interactions with the healthcare system.”—Nursing Spectrum "The Patient's Voice: Experiences of Illness is an outstanding collection of autobiographical essays. The 16 narratives, solicited specifically for this book, are skilfully written by both children and adults. The narratives themselves are intensely personal and powerful accounts of self understanding and human triumph over acute physical and psychiatric illness, and chronic disability. As the author notes in her preface, the contributors to The Patient's Voice are "known for their writing ability and the quality of their perceptions" (p. ix). This is a modest description, however, for the contributors are talented writers indeed."- Cathy Lysack, Wayne State University, Detroit MI

Book excerpt: The Third Book of Joy: Chain Dance is the second notebook of family lore, the collection of Joy's magical stories about her enslaved ancestors, researched by Professor Bo Wolfson in Burning Streams; the first notebook was published in Blood of Angels. When Heaven's heartbroken death in childbirth and Whip Man's torture at her father's hands lead her to resurrect herself as a death dancer, magic and terror drive the plantation's owner off of his land. Most of the men and women who labor on the haunted plantation flee, following Heaven's brother to his Louisiana swampland. But not everyone runs. A winged angel, a dancing coven of witches, a shapeshifting wildcat, and a ferocious pack of werewolves defend Solace's plantation from attack. Marauding patrollers and opportunists clash with the cunning, the blood thirst, and the supernatural powers unleashed by women determined to free themselves and the men and children they love.
