All that is aimed at in the following pages, is to present a few truthful pictures of a wild and primitive district, and of a state of society rapidly disappearing under the influence of modern ad vancement. Shetland, as it still is, is not very dif ferent, in many important particulars, from what it was in the days of Magnus Troil of hospitable memory. But steam navigation, enterprize, and capital, are producing rapid changes here as else where, so that passing away is written legibly on the dwellings - the fields and gardens - all, in deed, but the old rocks themselves. We hail improvements - but we cling notwith standing to early memories and ancient usages; and would gladly see them delineated on something less perishable than oral tradition, and especially in an abler style than we may hope to attain in the attempt.
