Book The Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen

Download or read book The Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen written by Leslie Stephen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-94) was a successful barrister, he also had a prolific journalistic and literary output throughout his legal career. He contributed more than three hundred essays on subjects such as law and ethics to the Saturday Review within the space of a decade, and more than eight hundred articles for the Pall Mall Gazette. This biography was written by his younger brother, the equally successful critic and editor Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), and published in 1895. Stephen paints an affectionate portrait of this leading Victorian legal and literary figure. He begins with a brief history of their influential family and his brother's early life and education, before discussing Fitzjames' professional successes, including his work on the Indian Viceroy's Council, the publication of his highly regarded History of the Criminal Law of England (1883), and his eventual appointment as a judge.

Book James Fitzjames Stephen

Download or read book James Fitzjames Stephen written by K. J. M. Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important study Dr Smith uses a wide range of primary materials to provide the first modern comprehensive examination of the work, writings and ideas of James Fitzjames Stephen. Stephen's broad rationalist/utilitarian ethical and intellectual stance manifested itself most prominently in law and social and political philosophy. Stephen's turn of mind led him to perceive the substance of literature and religious orthodoxy as of complementary interest and relevance to the social and political mores of Victorian England, making him one of Dickens' and Cardinal Newman's most formidable and trenchant critics. Dr Smith's account is the first to set Stephen's life and thought in its proper Victorian context, and marks a significant addition to the growing literature on the intellectual history of nineteenth-century England.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... 184 DIGEST OF THE LAW OF EVIDENCE. notes. These are the only Acts which deal with the Law of Evidence as I have denned it. It will be observed that they relate to three subjects only--the competency of witnesses, the proof of certain classes of documents, and certain details in the practice of examining witnesses. These details are provided for twice over, namely, once in 17 & 18 Vict c. 125, ss. 22-27, both inclusive, which concern civil proceedings only; and again in 28 Vict. c. 18, ss. 3-8, which re-enact these provisions in relation to proceedings of every kind. Thus, when the Statute Law upon the subject of Evidence is sifted and put in its proper place as part of the general system, it appears to occupy a very subordinate position in it. The ten statutes above mentioned are the only ones which really form part of the Law of Evidence, and their effect is fully given in twenty1 articles of the Digest, some of which contain other matter besides. Book Selected Writings of James Fitzjames Stephen

Download or read book Selected Writings of James Fitzjames Stephen written by Leslie Stephen and published by James Fitzjames Stephen: Selec. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Fitzjames Stephen was a distinguished jurist, a codifier of the law in England and India, and the judge in the ill-fated Maybrick case; a serious and prolific journalist, a pillar of the Saturday Review and the Pall Mall Gazette; and in Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (1873) the hard-hitting assailant of John Stuart Mill. Fitzjames's younger brother Leslie was founding editor of the Dictionary of National Biography and father of Virginia Woolf. The Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen, by his brother Leslie Stephen (1895) is the biography of one eminent Victorian by another. It is a lucid and affectionate portrait, yet far from uncritical, as revealing of its author as its subject. With a narrative that embraces legal history, the government of India, the Victorian press, the crisis of religious faith, and the "paradise lost" of political liberalism, the biography is also an indispensable source for the history of the Stephen family, which belonged to what Noel Annan called the "intellectual aristocracy" of the nineteenth century, connecting the Clapham Sect to the Bloomsbury group. This first modern edition of The Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen is a volume in the Oxofrd series, Selected Writings of James Fitzjames Stephen. It includes an introductory essay by Hermione Lee, extensive notes, four appendices of additional documents (many previously unpublished), and a bibliography of Fitzjames Stephen's articles and reviews by Thomas E. Schneider.
