Book Sintered Iron Rotating Bands Fabrication of German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands

Download or read book Sintered Iron Rotating Bands Fabrication of German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands written by TOUR (SAM) AND CO INC NEW YORK. and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, no. 4 in the series of reports being compiled on the German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands, contains a discussion of the methods used by the Germans in the fabrication of their standard rotating bands. As many operating details as were available are given in the sections concerning the individual fabricating steps. Special attention is directed to the section concerning wax impregnation. Although this is a comparatively simple operation, it is believed that the success of the German sintered iron rotating band is, in a large measure, dependent upon this wax impregnation.

Book German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands Ballistic Features of the Sintered Iron Bands

Download or read book German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands Ballistic Features of the Sintered Iron Bands written by TOUR (SAM) AND CO INC NEW YORK. and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, which deals with the ballistic features of the sintered iron bands, presents a general summary of the performance of sintered iron bands in guns of normal velocity and experimental firings at high velocities. This general summary is based not only on a few specific firing test results but also a study of numerous German documents of semi-official nature and on the information obtained personally by Mr. Tour in interrogation in Germany of various German personnel who were concerned with the production of sintered iron bands during the war. The features of the design of the rotating bands and the band seat groove are illustrated with the aid of a drawing of a German 75 mm. projectile, which was the only size for which drawings were available. This report also includes a brief summary of the work done in the United States on sintered iron rotating bands.

Book excerpt: This report, which is the fifth in a series of reports on German Sintered Iron Rotating Bands, contains a discussion of the physical properties desired in rotating bands, an outline of testing methods used and a brief discussion of some of the fundamental knowledge available on powder properties.

Book Sintered Iron Rotating Bands

Download or read book Sintered Iron Rotating Bands written by TOUR (SAM) AND CO INC NEW YORK. and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report No. 1 is a transcription of the notes made during visits to the various German plants that were engaged in fabricating sintered iron rotating bands or in producing iron powders for use in bands. These notes, which are arranged in chronological order, not only provide a general picture of the development of the sintered iron bands but also reflect the personalities and political considerations that influenced the course of the development. A picture of these background considerations is essential in evaluating the technical details that will be given in the succeeding reports under this contract.

Book Test Methods and Devices for Sintered Iron Rotating Bands

Download or read book Test Methods and Devices for Sintered Iron Rotating Bands written by J. D. Dale and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a discussion of the methods and devices used in testing the acceptability of sintered iron rotating bands, which are made by the powder metallurgy technique from commercial grades of iron powder. A state of urgency exists in the supply of copper available for the total military and civilian economy. For the third time in less than 50 years, the end uses of copper must be restricted to those where the combined physical or chemical properties, exclusive in copper, are most completely utilized. Several effective substitute materials are being developed to replace copper and gilding metal rotating bands, and among them is low-density sintered iron.

Book Friction of Rotating Band Material During Engraving and Initial Projectile Travel

Download or read book Friction of Rotating Band Material During Engraving and Initial Projectile Travel written by R. S. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sliding characteristics and coefficients of friction of rotating band and potential rotating band material on steel were studied in the laboratory at velocities corresponding with projectile velocities near the origin-of-rifling. The band materials investigated were gilding metal, 7075 aluminum alloy, AZ61A magnesium alloy, sintered iron, soft iron, nylon 6-6, and vulcanized fiber. It is possible to draw a number of conclusions and make a number of conjectures about the engraving and initial travel of cannon projectiles from the results of this study. A comparison of the different sliding characteristics and laboratory friction coefficients provides insight into the behavior of projectiles and will help to allow the design of rotating bands without the expensive extensive firing of an actual cannon.
