Book Simulator Study of Minimum Acceptable Level of Longitudinal Stability for a Representative STOL Configuration During Landing Approach

Download or read book Simulator Study of Minimum Acceptable Level of Longitudinal Stability for a Representative STOL Configuration During Landing Approach written by William D. Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base simulator study was conducted to determine the minimum acceptable level of longitudinal stability for a representative turbofan STOL (short take-off and landing) transport airplane during the landing approach. Real-time digital simulation techniques were used. The computer was programed with equations of motion for six degrees of freedom, and the aerodynamic inputs were based on measured wind-tunnel data. The primary piloting task was an instrument approach to a breakout at a 60-m (200-ft) ceiling.

Book Flight Investigation of Various Longitudinal Short Term Dynamics for STOL Landing Approach Using the X 22A Variable Stability Aircraft

Download or read book Flight Investigation of Various Longitudinal Short Term Dynamics for STOL Landing Approach Using the X 22A Variable Stability Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-flight flying qualities experiment using the variable stability X-22A aircraft investigated longitudinal flying qualities requirements for STOL aircraft in terminal area operations. Emphasis was placed on defining minimum requirements for the short-term response in VFR and IFR landing approaches at representative steep STOL approach conditions of 65 and 80 knots. Evaluation flights were conducted in negligible and moderate turbulence for a wide range of short-term frequencies and dampings. Identification of the dynamics of the evaluation configurations was performed, to a large extent, by a new, advanced digital identification technique developed for the X-22A aircraft.

Book A STOL Airworthiness Investigation Using Simulations of Representative STOL Aircraft

Download or read book A STOL Airworthiness Investigation Using Simulations of Representative STOL Aircraft written by R. C. Rumold and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simulator study of STOL airworthiness criteria for approach and landing was conducted using a series of different aircraft models. These models were selected to isolate a single parameter or characteristic for evaluation. Specific areas included in the study were: an evaluation of speed margins, a flight path margin evaluation, a study of flare and landing technique, the effects of touchdown zone constraints, an evaluation of two different turbulence models, an investigation of flight path/airspeed cross coupling, and a study of the effects of short-term flight path response. This report contains a detailed description of the simulation and the data obtained. These data include performance measures, pilot commentary, and pilot ratings.

Book A Flight Simulator Study of STOL Transport Longitudinal Control Characteristics

Download or read book A Flight Simulator Study of STOL Transport Longitudinal Control Characteristics written by Robert A. Berg and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of STOL transport terminal area characteristics was conducted in order to identify factors that may be significant in the establishment of longitudinal handling qualities criteria. The investigation was broad in scope, covering a wide range of longitudinal characteristics representative of STOL aircraft and STOL operating conditions. The use of a three-axis STOL flight director, a pitch stability argumentation system, and a direct-lift control device were also examined. Results of the study indicate that acceptable levels of certain longitudinal characteristics are functions of the piloting technique used for flight-path and speed control, and although pilots tend to adapt well to a wide variety of configurations, they still have definite control preferences based on their flight experience.
