Shimmy and brake-induced vibrations can lead to accidents due to excessive wear and shortened life of gear parts and contribute to pilot and passenger discomfort. To increase understanding of these problems, a literature survey was performed. The major focus is on work from the last ten years. Some older publications are included to understand the longevity of the problem and the background from earlier researchers. The literature survey includes analyses, testing, modeling, and simulation of aircraft landing gear; and experimental validation and characterization of shimmy and brake-induced vibration of aircraft landing gear. The paper presents an overview of the problem, background information, and a history of landing gear dynamics problems and solutions. Based on the survey an assessment and recommendations of the most critically needed enhancements to the state of the art will be presented. The status of Langley work contributing to this activity will be given.

Book excerpt: The ability to accurately predict the dynamic response of an aircraft while it is operating in the taxi mode depends, in part on the correct modeling of the dynamic characteristics of the landing gear system. Traditionally, landing gear have been designed to absorb landing impact ('shock absorber') and their characteristics during periodic, oscillatory response ('spring') have been considered as secondary. With the increased emphasis on the rough or damaged field taxi operation, there is a requirement to determine the best methods for modeling the gear system. This report documents a brief review of the state of the art of gear modeling. A study was then conducted to evaluate important model parameters, using a simple cantilevered gear computer simulation. Also included is the development of a technique for the experimental determination of important gear system parameters. (Author).

Subsystems modeled are the aerodynamics, engine dynamics, vertical strut dynamics, fore-aft strut dynamics, tire/wheel dynamics, brake dynamics, and antiskid dynamics. The problem is restricted to a landing sequence with three degrees of freedom permitted for the aircraft. Aerodynamics are based on constant coefficients of lift, drag, and pitching moment. A drag chute is also employed. Engine dynamics are based on a linear thrust vs. velocity schedule. The strut dynamics are modeled by a mass-spring-damper system. The tire/wheel dynamics subsystem applies Newton's Second Law to derive the wheel slip ratio and ground-tire coefficient of friction. Brake dynamics are based on a schedule of brake torque vs. brake pressure. Antiskid dynamics model the Hytrol Mark II antiskid system. Stopping distances from simulation are compared to flight test data to verify the model. Results from the simulation agree with flight test data. A schedule of main gear load vs. velocity is proposed as an alternative to current tire testing practice. (Author).

Book excerpt: "The focus of this work is the development of a Multi-degree Of Freedom (MOF) model for simulation and control of the landing performances of the SAE Heavy Lift Airplane model built by the Aerodynamics design team of RIT. From dynamic considerations, the landing gear performance has two areas of interest: a) behavior during touchdown impact, and b) response to excitation induced by track roughness during taxi, take-off and later part of the landing runs. As the problem at hand is highly nonlinear and complex, initially a simplified 1-dof model of the same aircraft is derived and analyzed using Lagrange's equations and energy methods. After understanding the basic dynamics of the system, a more complex 3-dof model is derived considering the dynamics of the wheels of the landing gear. Analyses with and without the runway profile are carried out to study the effects of the input signals on the derived model. In order to achieve a controlled landing behavior of the aircraft, a linear damper or shock absorber is incorporated into the analysis and simulation, even though it is not available in the original prototype. The nonlinear models are linearized in Simulink and control system designs are performed on the linearized models using Root Locus techniques, Pole Placement methods, LQR approach, and Error Space approach. The designed controllers are then applied on the original nonlinear 3-dof model of the landing gear and a study of the effects of changing landing gear parameters is performed. Open loop and Closed loop simulations are carried out to come up with an effective controller type, which will ensure optimum landing performance in a normal landing situation."--Abstract.

Analytical methods for finding oleo strut forces, tire forces, and for treating the aircraft landing gear dynamics problem, from the simple one degree of freedom system to an equivalent system of six degrees of freedom, are studied and results formulated. One section of this report is devoted to a survey of the known mathematical techniques for treating nonlinear mechanics problems. Also a method of reducing the solution of a set of nonlinear differential equations to the solution of a set of linear equations has been developed. Equations of motion which predict the behavior of the landing aircraft from initial impact, during rebound and to final runout are written, solved, and correlated with an actual landing. Attention is called to the direct simulation analog computer or electric circuit model study of drop testing a gear. Results from this study are compared and correlated with drop test data. A brief account of the physics of rebound phenomena is also presented. (Author).

Specifically, a nonlinear model of an A-6 Intruder Main Gear is developed, simulated, and validated against static and dynamic test data. This model includes nonlinear effects such as a polytropic gas model, velocity squared damping, a geometry governed model for the discharge coefficients, stick-slip friction effects and a nonlinear tire spring and damping model. An Adams-Moulton predictor corrector was used to integrate the equations of motion until a discontinuity caused by a stick-slip friction model was reached, at which point, a Runga-Kutta routine integrated past the discontinuity and returned the problem solution back to the predictor corrector. Run times of this software are around 2 mins. per 1 sec. of simulation under dynamic circumstances. To validate the model, engineers at the Aircraft Landing Dynamics facilities at NASA Langley Research Center installed one A-6 main gear on a drop carriage and used a hydraulic shaker table to provide simulated runway inputs to the gear. Book excerpt: An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted to determine which characteristics of a light aircraft landing gear influence gear dynamic behavior significantly. The investigation focused particularly on possible modification for load control. Pseudostatic tests were conducted to determine the gear fore-and-aft spring constant, axial friction as a function of drag load, brake pressure-torque characteristics, and tire force-deflection characteristics. To study dynamic tire response, vertical drops were conducted at impact velocities of 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 m/s onto a level surface; to determine axial-friction effects, a second series of vertical drops were made at 1.5 m/s onto surfaces inclined 5 deg and 10 deg to the horizontal. An average dynamic axial-friction coefficient of 0.15 was obtained by comparing analytical data with inclined surface drop test data. Dynamic strut bending and associated axial friction were found to be severe for the drop tests on the 10 deg surface.

Book excerpt: The effects of interaction between a landing gear and a flexible airplane structure on the behavior of the landing gear and the loads in the structure have been studied by treating the equations of motion of the airplane and the landing gear as a coupled system. The landing gear is considered to have nonlinear characteristics typical of conventional gears, namely, velocity-squared damping, polytropic air-compression springing, and exponential tire force-deflection cheracteristics. For the case where only two modes of the structure are considered, an equivalent three-mass system is derived for representing the airplane and landing-gear combination, which may be used to simulate the effects of structural flexibility in jig drop tests of landing gears.

Book excerpt: The aircraft landing gear is a complex multi-degree of freedom dynamic system, and may encounter vibration or dynamic response problems induced by braking action. The vibratory modes can be induced by brake and tire-ground frictional characteristics, antiskid operation, brake design features, landing gear design features, and tire characteristics. The impact of this vibration can range from catastrophic failure of critical system components or entire landing gears, to fatigue of small components, to passenger annoyance. It is therefore important that the vibration is assessed during the design concept phase, and verified during the development and testing phases of the system hardware.This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) has been prepared by a panel of the A-5A Subcommittee to present an overview of the landing gear problems associated with aircraft braking system dynamics, and the approaches to the identification, diagnosis, and solution of these problems. All pertinent system modes of vibration are described. In addition, facilities and techniques available for test and evaluation are presented and discussed, and useful references are cited. The terminology used is intended to be consistent with AIR1489, "Aerospace Landing Gear Systems Terminology", but some terminology herein is not yet included in AIR1489. The panel members include representatives from major brake, landing gear, aircraft, and brake control system manufacturers. In addition, drafts of the document were circulated for input beyond the SAE to other experts in the field. AIR1064D has been reaffirmed to comply with the SAE five-year review policy.
