Book The Shropshire Montgomeryshire Light Railway

Download or read book The Shropshire Montgomeryshire Light Railway written by Peter Johnson and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Light Railway, was one of the lines managed and operated by Colonel Holman Fred Stephens from his office in Salford Terrace in Tonbridge Kent. It was a revival of the long disused Potteries Shrewsbury & North Wales Railway, a railway that went bankrupt shortly after opening in the mid 1860s and was left derelict for forty years. The railway reopened in 1911 to much local rejoicing, however the company was in financial difficulties by the 1920s and withdrew its passenger services in the early 1930s. During the Second World War the army took over the railway, constructing ammunition and stores depots along its entire length. After the war the railway continued to be operated by the army until closed in 1960, when it was handed over to the Western Region of British Railways for demolition. The author has researched the history of this fascinating bucolic railway over many years. In this new book he presents much previously unpublished information and many fascinating insights into the railway’s complicated history.

Book The World s First Railway System

Download or read book The World s First Railway System written by Mark Casson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British railway network was a monument to Victorian private enterprise. Its masterpieces of civil engineering were emulated around the world. But its performance was controversial: praised for promoting a high density of lines, it was also criticised for wasteful duplication of routes. This is the first history of the British railway system written from a modern economic perspective. It uses conterfactual analysis to construct an alternaive network to represent the most efficient alternative rail network that could have been constructed given what was known at the time - the first time this has been done. It reveals how weaknesses in regulation and defects in government policy resulted in enormous inefficiency in the Victorian system that Britain lives with today. British railway companies developed into powerful regional monopolies, which then contested each other's territories. When denied access to existing lines in rival territories, they built duplicate lines instead. Plans for an integrated national system, sponsored by William Gladstone, were blocked by Members of Parliament because of a perceived conflict with the local interests they represented. Each town wanted more railways than its neighbours, and so too many lines were built. The costs of these surplus lines led ultimately to higher fares and freight charges, which impaired the performance of the economy. The book will be the definitive source of reference for those interested in the economic history of the British railway system. It makes use of a major new historical source, deposited railway plans, integrates transport and local history through its regional analysis of the railway system, and provides a comprehensive, classified bibliography.

Book Under the Semaphores at Shrewsbury 1987 1994

Download or read book Under the Semaphores at Shrewsbury 1987 1994 written by David J. Parker and published by David J. Parker. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look back at Shrewsbury's railway infrastructure and train services as they were between 1987 and 1994 from a 2014 perspective, focussing particularly on the six mechanical signalboxes then operating in the town and the predominant semaphore signalling they controlled - including the UK's (and now also the world's) largest: Severn Bridge Junction with its 180-lever frame. In these last few years of nationalisation on the UK's railways, before fragmentation and tighter cost controls brought on by privatisation took effect, first generation diesel motive power is seen giving way to newer types of traction, while locomotive-hauled passenger trains are falling out of favour and being replaced by more economical railcar services. Also shown are the much-lamented regular Intercity trains to London, lost freight and postal traffic, and the summer Saturday holiday trains that used to pass through the town on their way to the Cambrian coast. Written by a British heritage railway signalman and former resident of Shrewsbury, this book focusses on just a small part of the UK's ever-evolving rail network but witnesses the effect of the changing times on its operations, and the outcome of both modernisation and rationalisation as mechanical signalling technology is adapted for or superseded by the needs of the late 20th Century railway and beyond.
