Book Short crack Growth Behaviour in Various Aircraft Materials

Download or read book Short crack Growth Behaviour in Various Aircraft Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AGARD Report R-732 reviews the results of the first phase of an AGARD Cooperative Test Programme on the behaviour and growth of "short" fatigue cracks. That report describes the establishment of a common test method, means of data collection/analysis and crack growth modelling in an aircraft alloy AA2024-T3. The second and concluding phase of this Programme allowed participants to test various materials and loading conditions. The results of this second phase are described in this report. All materials exhibited a "short-crack" effect to some extent. The effect was much less evident in 4340 steel than in the other materials. For the aluminium, aluminium-lithium and titanium alloys, short cracks grew at stress-intensity factor ranges lower, in some cases much lower, than the thresholds obtained from long crack tests. Several laboratories used the same crack growth model to analyze the growth of short cracks. Reasonable agreement was found between measured and predicted short-crack growth rates and fatigue lives.

Book Some Considerations on Short Crack Growth Behaviour in Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Some Considerations on Short Crack Growth Behaviour in Aircraft Structures written by Howard A. Wood and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two papers included in this Report were presented at the 52nd Meetings of the Structures and Materials Panel as the first stage of a study of the problems encountered in predicting the behaviour of short cracks. The fracture mechanics approach is being used for fatigue life assessment and durability evaluation to aircraft structures. Conventional crack growth prediction methods applied to smaller crack length ranges have met limited success so far. Short cracks may grow somewhat faster than expected by predictions using fracture mechanics data obtained from long crack specimens. The behaviour of short cracks obviously is affected by some analysis and additional secondary loading effects not normally accounted for in this stress intensity determination but having likely effects in short crack growth. This Report was sponsored by the Structures and materials Panel of AGARD. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the aircraft that form the backbone of the U.S. Air Force operational fleet are 25 years old or older. A few of these will be replaced with new aircraft, but many are expected to remain in service an additional 25 years or more. This book provides a strategy to address the technical needs and priorities associated with the Air Force's aging airframe structures. It includes a detailed summary of the structural status of the aging force, identification of key technical issues, recommendations for near-term engineering and management actions, and prioritized near-term and long-term research recommendations.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Failure and Lifing Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures and Components

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Failure and Lifing Analyses for Metallic Aircraft Structures and Components written by Russell Wanhill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise discussion of fatigue crack growth (FCG) failure and lifing analysis methods for metallic aircraft structures and components. After a reasonably concise historical review, surveys are made of (i) the importance of fatigue for aircraft structural failures and the sources of fatigue nucleation and cracking, (ii) contemporary FCG lifing methods, and (iii) the Quantitative Fractography (QF) required for determining the actual FCG behaviour. These surveys are followed by the main part of the book, which is a discussion, using case histories, of the applicabilities of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and non-LEFM methods for analysing service fatigue failures and full- and sub-scale test results. This discussion is derived primarily from the experiences of the Defence Science and Technology Group in Melbourne, Australia, and the Netherlands Aerospace Centre, Marknesse, the Netherlands.
