Book Shooting Rats Other Plays and Poems

Download or read book Shooting Rats Other Plays and Poems written by Peter Turrini and published by Ariadne Press (CA). This book was released on 1996 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains some of the more controversial and personal works produced by Peter Turrini, who has come to be recognized today as one of the leading Austrian dramatists. His first drama, Shooting Rats, was written in 1967, when Turrini, fed up with life as an advertising copy editor, fled into "exile" on an isolated Greek island. The play, with its theme of alienation from the consumer society, was an instant success and has since appeared on stages throughout Europe. Infanticide (1972) continues the theme of alienation, intensified to the point of murder. Turrini explores the heart of an unfortunate young woman who paradoxically is driven to kill her infant child in order to feel like a human being. In Death and the Devil (1990) Turrini confronts his audience with the most controversial of his plays. A disillusioned priest sets out on a journey, seeking to discover Sin. His self-crucifixion and death end the quest in a highly symbolic and for some, scandalous fashion. The final play, The Siege of Vienna (1995), like a number of his other dramas, treats contemporary social conditions in Austria. The poems of A Few Steps Back (1980) are much more personal than Turrini's dramas. They show the man behind the writer and reveal the autobiographical element that runs through all of the writings of this socially engaged author.

Book Holocaust

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Holocaust written by Fritz Hochwälder and published by Ariadne Press (CA). This book was released on 2003 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fritz Hochwalder's Holocaust: Court for the Dead features a clandestine court, inquiring into the guilt or innocence of Jewish leaders involuntarily enmeshed in the deportation of fellow Jews to the death factories of the Third Reich. It is perhaps the drama closest to Hochwalder's central concern as an author, the ethical conduct of human beings. The play is based on historical events in Budapest in 1944-45 in which the SS offered to barter the lives of a million Jews for the delivery of 10,000 trucks. Selective use of background facts along with the construction of a dramatically effective plot put Hochwalder's drama into the "must read" category. It is the only play about the Holocaust in which Jews do not fight the oppressor but hold court for one of their own, who in spite of good intentions may have gone too far."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Chasing After the Wind

Book excerpt: Barbara Frischmuth, among the most widely recognised and respected Austrian writers today, is recognised not only for her descriptive skill, but also for being a moderate feminist. In these four short tales she presents realistic portraits of women caught up in relationships determined largely by social conventions, internalised roles, and sometimes just plain bad luck. Taking her title from Ecclesiastes "All is vanity and a chasing after the wind" she presents psychologically sound studies of women protagonists' futile efforts to break out of the dead-end situations, in which they have been trapped.

Book Postwar Austrian Theater

Download or read book Postwar Austrian Theater written by Linda C. DeMeritt and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of seventeen articles offers an investigation of some of the most important voices from Austria's theatre world between 1945 and 2001. They are for the most part critical voices engaged in the constantly evolving redefinition of a political state and its private citizens, undermining the status quo and the general complacency. They include both writers, producers and directors, for the written word must take shape on stage and the real debate of drama takes place in a public space. Therefore this volume attempts to include issues of staging and reception where possible. Taken as a whole this volume is intended to show the incredible richness and variety of the theatre scene in Austria.

Book The Slackers and Other Plays

Download or read book The Slackers and Other Plays written by Peter Turrini and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turrini's theatre works extend far beyond their Austrian origins in expressing the hopes, frustrations, and hypocrisies of life in the modern world. The plays contained in this volume -- A Crazy Day, Joseph and Mary, A Social Engagement, and The Slackers -- offer English-speaking readers a representative sampling of Turrini's work. As varied as they may seem, two unifying threads run through them all: Turrini's use of language to admonish society and his articulation of the element of tragedy which informs and defines modern man in his isolation.

Book Flight from Greatness

Book excerpt: Translation from the German work first published in 1978, presented here with an afterword by the translator, Lowell A. Bangerter. Six biographical essays on writers Ferdinand Raimund, Johann Nestroy, Franz Grillparzer, Adalbert Stifter and composers Franz Schubert and Johann Strauss help illuminate the Austrian character. The author contends that the common elements of not being recognized, of being misunderstood, and of self misunderstanding make up the "Austrian fate" or greatness fleeing from itself.
