Book U boat in New Zealand Waters

Download or read book U boat in New Zealand Waters written by Gerald Shone and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "U-boat In New Zealand Waters is a book about the farthest U-boat patrol of World War Two, a journey which brought the ultra-long-range submarine U 862 to New Zealand's East Coast in January 1945. U 862 was one of three U-boats based in the Far East chosen in Berlin for operations against merchant shipping off the Australian coast in 1944. After sinking the US Liberty ship Robert J. Walker south of Sydney on Christmas Day, 1944, U 862 headed for New Zealand waters and conducted a war patrol along the East Coast of the North Island. Looking for ships to sink, U 862's Commander Timm made a daring entry into Gisborne harbour at midnight on 15 January and the following night chased and fired a torpedo at a merchant ship in Hawkes Bay. These operations in New Zealand waters remained known only to a small number of Allied codebreakers until 1992 when the First Watch Officer of U 862, Gunther Reiffenstuhl made his personal diary available to the German U-boat Archive in Cuxhaven-Altenbruch. In 1997, the author met and interviewed Gunther Reiffenstuhl as well as the medical officer aboard U 862, Dr Jobst Schaefer and radio operator Gunter Nethge. The book is based mainly on the First Watch Officer's personal war diary and investigates in detail the war patrol of U 862 in New Zealand and Australian waters"--Author's summary.

Book The Battlecruiser New Zealand

Download or read book The Battlecruiser New Zealand written by Matthew Wright and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of HMS New Zealand, a battlecruiser paid for by the government of New Zealand at the height of its pro-Imperial ‘jingo’ era in 1909, when Britain’s ally Japan was perceived as a threat in Australasia and the Pacific. Born of the collision between New Zealand’s patriotic dreams and European politics, the tale of HMS New Zealand is further wrapped in the turbulent power-plays at the Admiralty in the years leading up to the First World War. The ship went on to have a distinguished First World War career, when she was present in all three major naval battles – Heligoland, Dogger Bank and Jutland – in the North Sea. The book ‘busts’ many of the myths associated with the ship and her construction, including the intent of the gift, New Zealand’s ability to pay, deployment, and the story behind the piupiu (skirt) and tiki (pendant) that, the crew believed, bestowed special protection upon the vessel. All is inter-woven with the human and social context to create a ‘biography’ of the ship as an expression of human endeavour, in significantly more detail than any of the summaries available in prior accounts. Extensively illustrated, this is a book with appeal to a wide audience, from naval enthusiasts and historians to the general reader with a wider interest in the story of Empire. The use of archival material available only in New Zealand, including the Ship’s Book, adds a dimension and novelty not previously included in histories of this great battlecruiser.

Book excerpt: "In 1915 the government chartered the trans-Tasman liners Maheno and Marama for use as our first hospital ships. For the next four years, starting with the Maheno off the beach at Gallipoli, they travelled the globe, staffed by Kiwi seamen, doctors and nurses. Back home, thousands of New Zealanders made items and raised money to support these 'mercy ships' and followed their movements closely as they transported the sick and wounded from many countries"--First World War Centenary Project website.

Book The Collective Naval Defence of Empire 1900 1940

Download or read book The Collective Naval Defence of Empire 1900 1940 written by Nicholas Tracy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of high policy documents charts Britain’s difficulties in defending the Empire in a time of ’imperial overstretch’. The 20th century saw the rise of several great maritime and military powers and the relative decline of British strength, which created major defence problems for the British Empire. Various solutions were attempted, such as ententes with France and Russia, the settling of differences with the USA and an alliance with Japan. These sufficed until after World War I, when the Empire gained several new territorial responsibilities, all to be defended on a declining economic base. The dominions were encouraged to pay for their own navies, although the Admiralty wished to assume control of them. The increasing threat from Japan made Australia, New Zealand and other Asian colonies nervous and the promised ’main fleet to Singapore’ became less and less likely as the 1930s wore on.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1873, New Zealand was rocked by a scandal: Auckland newspaper editor David Leckie insisted that Russian terrorists had taken over a British warship in Auckland's Waitemata harbour and held the town to ransom. It was a hoax, of course, but he did it to highlight New Zealand's growing sense of vulnerability as one of Britain's furthest-flung colonies. So, in earnest, began New Zealand's naval story - one that extended through the highs and lows of the twentieth century: the First World War - when New Zealand naval forces and personnel fought from the North Sea to the Pacific - to the Second, when New Zealand's naval forces and personnel served in most of the major theatres, and finally the Cold War. It was a dramatic, exciting and ultimately human tale of people, politics, heroism and struggle, played out over more than 130 tumultuous years.

Book The Sea and the Second World War

Download or read book The Sea and the Second World War written by Marcus Faulkner and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth study of World War II’s naval operations. “Rarely does a collection of essays offer so many new and persuasive assessments. Well done!”—Professor David Snead, Liberty University The sea shaped the course and conduct of World War II, from the first moments of the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, to the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. The impact could be felt far beyond the shoreline, as the arms and armies carried across the oceans were ultimately destined to wage war ashore. Populations and industries depended on the raw materials and supplies in a war that increasingly became a contest of national will and economic might. Ultimately, it was the war at sea that linked numerous regional conflicts and theaters of operation into a global war. As the war grew in complexity and covered an increasingly larger geographical area, the organization of the maritime effort and the impact it had on the formulation of national strategy also evolved. This volume illustrates the impact of naval operations on the Second World War by highlighting topics previously neglected in the scholarship. In doing so, it provides new insights into political, strategic, administrative, and operational aspects of the maritime dimension of the war. “A fine collection of essays by some of the leading scholars in the field. The book addresses comprehensively the vital importance of the sea across a range of theaters during the Second World War through a diverse selection of case studies. The examinations and re-examinations in this volume will be of interest to both scholars and practitioners.”—Dr. Steven Paget, University of Portsmouth

Book Blue water Rationale

Download or read book Blue water Rationale written by Ian C. McGibbon and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For twenty years the strategic basis of New Zealand's defence policy was "the main fleet to Singaport" strategy -- the theory of a properly defended Singapore Naval Base to which adequate British naval forces would be despatched to defend the Empire east of Suez. In the event a fleet, far smaller than originally planned, arrived at Singapore in December 1941, only to suffer immediate annihilation; the Base held out, not the months predicted by British experts but rather just seven days before falling to attacking Japanese forces on 15 February 1942. This book, then, is essentially a study of why New Zealand placed reliance on an unsatisfactory strategy, which was always admitted to be second best to that in which a battlefleet was permanently based in the Pacific. The evolution of post-war arrangements for the protection of the British Empire in the Far East and Pacific Ocean is traced, with emphasis upon the procrastination which marked the provision of the necessary facilities. There is a description of the dilemmas confronting British strategists in the lte 1930s ... they were obliged to plan for war with three powerful enemies, knowing that to fight even two would be to court disaster. New Zealand's approach to the problem of security is discussed in detail. It is shown that far from being complacent behind the shield of a supposedly all powerful Royal Navy, New Zealand leaders were consistently worried by their country's vulnerable position ... And yet the only possible alternative ally, the United States of America, could not be counted upon to deal with an aggressive Japan. This book is a study of Anglo-New Zealand relations in the broad field of naval defence ... Although primarily dealing with New Zealand's defence policy, the book is a necessary introduction to any study of New Zealand's developing role in the world and of the evolution of its foreign policy."--Inside front cover.
