Book excerpt: This experimental program was focused on the effect of surface geometry (shear keys) on the transmission of shear forces between concrete cast against a hardened concrete interface. This research was part of a larger study at The University of Texas at Austin focused on several aspects of spliced precast concrete girder technology, particularly those concerning the interface between precast girders and cast-in-place splices. 14 push-through type specimens were tested with varying surface geometries, interface reinforcement ratios, and levels of prestress normal to the interface. The surface types considered included smooth, single shear keys, multiple shear keys, saw teeth of multiple depths and a monolithic specimen for comparison. The principle findings were that surfaces with properly detailed indentations could transfer significantly higher shear forces before slip occurred than smooth surfaces, and that shear keys generally displaced better performance than saw-teeth. Forces from prestress and yielding of reinforcement crossing the interface during failure were found to contribute to the strength in effectively the same manner. In addition, the shear friction based provisions of ACI 318-11, AASTHO LRFD 2012, and Eurocode 2 were found to provide satisfactory predictions of the ultimate strength of such surfaces with reinforcement ratios less than 0.75 %.

Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 22 (thesis year 1977) a total of 10,658 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 227 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 22 reports theses submitted in 1977, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Proper design of connections is one major key to a successful prefabrication. The principal aim of fib Bulletin 43 is to encourage good practice in the design of structural connections in precast concrete structures. This is achieved through a good understanding of structural connections as parts of the overall structural system and of basic force transferring mechanisms. The bulletin consists of two parts; the first part concerns general considerations and philosophy in the design of structural connections, and the second part deals with basic force transferring mechanisms within structural connections. The main focus is on the design of structural connections with regard to their structural function in ordinary design situations in the serviceability and ultimate limit states, and in accidental/abnormal design situations, like fire, lack of fit and impact/accidental loads. Other aspects considered include production, handling and site erection of elements, building physics, durability and maintenance. Bulletin 43 applies to structural connections for precast concrete buildings, although the information on basic force transfer mechanisms can also be applicable to other types of prefabricated structures.

Book excerpt: "This thesis describes the results of a study initiated to examine the influence of concrete unit weight on the direct shear transfer across an interface of concretes cast at different times. This type of interface is common with structural precast concrete connections, such as corbels, for which shear friction design provisions are commonly used. Increasing use of lightweight aggregate concretes prompted this investigation to determine the appropriateness of current shear friction design provisions with respect to all-lightweight and sand-lightweight concrete. The experimental investigation included thirty-six push-off test specimens, each of which was constructed with a cold-joint at the interface shear plane. Test variables included unit weight of concrete (108, 120, and 145 pcf), target compressive strength of concrete (5000 and 8000 psi), and interface condition (smooth or roughened). A constant amount of reinforcing steel was provided across the shear plane. Results suggest that concrete unit weight did not play a significant role in the interface shear strength for the cold-joint specimens in this study. Results were also compared with shear friction design provisions in both the ACI 318 code and the PCI Design Handbook. Shear strengths computed using the coefficient of friction [mu] approach were conservative for the sand-lightweight and all-lightweight cold-joint specimens in this study. The value of the effective coefficient of friction [mu subscript e] computed using the PCI Design Handbook approach was found to be conservative for both roughened and smooth non-monolithic interfaces for each concrete type. Finally, the use of the lightweight concrete modification factor [lambda] in the calculation for the effective coefficient of friction [mu subscript e] was found to be conservative for the sand-lightweight and all-lightweight cold-joint specimens in this study. Nearly 20 years later Bulletin 74 brings that first publication up to date. It offers a synthesis of the latest structural design knowledge about precast building structures against the background of 21st century technological innovations in materials, production and construction. With it, we hope to help architects and engineers achieve a full understanding of precast concrete building structures, the possibilities they offer and their specific design philosophy. It was principally written for non-seismic structures. The handbook contains eleven chapters, each dealing with a specific aspect of precast building structures. The first chapter of the handbook highlights best practice opportunities that will enable architects, design engineers and contractors to work together towards finding efficient solutions, which is something unique to precast concrete buildings. The second chapter offers basic design recommendations that take into account the possibilities, restrictions and advantages of precast concrete, along with its detailing, manufacture, transport, erection and serviceability stages. Chapter three describes the precast solutions for the most common types of buildings such as offices, sports stadiums, residential buildings, hotels, industrial warehouses and car parks. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to evaluate the shear transfer capacity of polymer modified concrete (PMC). The experimental program was designed to verify the general theory of shear transfer mechanism for concrete and to evaluate the necessary constants of the theoretical expressions. The general theory presented covers structural members with (1) no shear reinforcement, (2) moderate shear reinforcement, and (3) high shear reinforcement. Four groups of specimens were tested. Group A specimens were used to investigate the relation between intrinsic bond shear transfer capacity and the strength of the composite materials (PMC and concrete). No transverse steel was used in these specimens. Group B specimens contained various amounts of shear reinforcement at the shear interface. Group C specimens were cast monolithically using ordinary concrete to serve as control specimens. Group D were control specimens made up of cast-in-place concrete over precast concrete. They were designed to evaluate the "apparent cohesion" of such elements, for the purpose of comparison with Group A specimens.
