Book excerpt: One of the blackest comedies ever written, Ben Jonson's Volpone is the masterpiece of a playwright all too frequently dismissed for being unnecessarily dark and academic. Merciless in its depiction of avarice, this rich and masterful play provokes both laughter and indignation in its audiences. This Handbook: - Provides in-depth analysis of the play, scene by scene and line by line - Examines the multitude of interpretations of Volpone throughout history, including both on stage and screen - Explores the critical discourse surrounding the play and summarises the social and literary forces that shaped Jonson's work

Book Ben Jonson and Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ben Jonson and Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by George Greenwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben Jonson and Shakespeare Sir Sidney Lee some twenty years ago committed himself to the following statement concerning William Shakspere of Stratford-upon-Avon: "Patient investigation which has been in progress for more than two hundred years has brought together a mass of biographical detail which far exceeds that accessible in the case of any poet contemporary with Shakespeare." (Times, Jan. 8, 1902). Now if this statement is intended to mean (and I can assign no other reasonable significance to the words) that we know more about the life of Shakspere of Stratford than we know about that of any poet contemporary with him, there is an audacity about it which is really quite sublime; indeed the proverbial "one step" between the sublime and the ridiculous seems here to have entirely disappeared. It is quite true that around the name of "Shakespeare" there has grown up a mountainous mass of literature - of criticism, of illustration, of theory, of conjecture, of dogmatism, of assertion, of allusions, real or supposed, etc., etc. - which is perfectly appalling in its extent and variety; but notwithstanding that the whole world has been ransacked for evidence, and notwithstanding that lives have been devoted to the subject and an incredible amount of labour bestowed upon it, we find it as true to-day as it was when the late J. R. Green published his History of the English People, that "of hardly any great poet do we know so little." In marked contrast with Sir Sidney's flamboyant assertion are the more sober, and quite veracious, words with which Mr. Gregory Smith commences his recently published study of Ben Jonson in the "Englishmen of Letters" series (1919): - "We know more of Jonson than of any of the greater writers of his age. Download or read book Ben Jonson s Plays Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Ben Jonson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 The greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality as sumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age. Ben Jonson came of the stock that was centuries after to give to the world Thomas Carlyle; for Jonson's grandfather was of Annandale, over the Solway, whence he migrated to England. Jonson's father lost his estate under Queen Mary, having been cast into prison and forfeited. He entered the church, but died a month before his illustrious son was born, leaving his widow and child in poverty. Jonson's birthplace was Westminster, and the time of his birth early in 1573. He was thus nearly ten years Shakespeare's junior, and less well off, if a tri e better born. But Jonson did not profit even by this slight advantage. His mother married beneath her, a wright or bricklayer, and Jonson was for a time apprenticed to the trade. As a youth he attracted the attention of the famous antiquary, William Camden, then usher at Westminster School, and there the poet laid the solid foundations of his classical learning. Jonson always held Camden in veneration, acknowledging that to him he owed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
