Book Shakespeare Bacon And The Great Unknown Annotated Edition

Download or read book Shakespeare Bacon And The Great Unknown Annotated Edition written by Andrew Lang and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory that Francis Bacon was, in the main, the author of “Shakespeare’s plays,” has now been for fifty years before the learned world. Its advocates have met with less support than they had reason to expect. Their methods, their logic, and their hypotheses closely resemble those applied by many British and foreign scholars to Homer; and by critics of the very Highest School to Holy Writ. Yet the Baconian theory is universally rejected in England by the professors and historians of English literature; and generally by students who have no profession save that of Letters. The Baconians, however, do not lack the countenance and assistance of highly distinguished persons, whose names are famous where those of mere men of letters are unknown; and in circles where the title of “Professor” is not duly respected. Contents: Introduction Chapter I: The Baconian And Anti-Willian Positions Chapter Ii: The “Silence” About Shakespeare Chapter Iii: That Impossible He - The Schooling Of Shakespeare Chapter Iv: Mr. Collins On Shakespeare’s Learning Chapter V: Shakespeare, Genius, And Society Chapter Vi: The Courtly Plays: “Love’s Labour’s Lost” Chapter Vii: Contemporary Recognition Of Will As Author Chapter Viii: “The Silence Of Philip Henslowe” Chapter Ix: The Later Life Of Shakespeare - His Monument And Portraits Chapter X: “The Traditional Shakspere” Chapter Xi: The First Folio Chapter Xii: Ben Jonson And Shakespeare Chapter Xiii: The Preoccupations Of Bacon Appendices Appendix I: “Troilus And Cressida” Appendix Ii - Chettle’s Supposed Allusion To Will Shakspere This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer.

Book excerpt: William Shakespeare's life in Stratford-upon-Avon is well recorded. His even longer life living in London is not recorded at all. There is something highly significant missing from his story. This book explores the evidence that Shakespeare had a guardian in London, a man who was both his mentor and business manager. A prolific writer himself, this fellow genius's recorded life constantly links with William Shakespeare's writings. This book finally unravels and resolves the 400-year-old mystery.

Book Shakespeare s Companies

Download or read book Shakespeare s Companies written by Terence G. Schoone-Jongen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a period (c.1577-1594) that is often neglected in Elizabethan theater histories, this study considers Shakespeare's involvement with the various London acting companies before his membership in the Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1594. Locating Shakespeare in the confusing records of the early London theater scene has long been one of the many unresolved problems in Shakespeare studies and is a key issue in theatre history, Shakespeare biography, and historiography. The aim in this book is to explain, analyze, and assess the competing claims about Shakespeare's pre-1594 acting company affiliations. Schoone-Jongen does not demonstrate that one particular claim is correct but provides a possible framework for Shakespeare's activities in the 1570s and 1580s, an overview of both London and provincial playing, and then offers a detailed analysis of the historical plausibility and probability of the warring claims made by biographers, ranging from the earliest sixteenth-century references to contemporary arguments. Full chapters are devoted to four specific acting companies, their activities, and a summary and critique of the arguments for Shakespeare's involvement in them (The Queen's Men, Strange's Men, Pembroke's Men, and Sussex's Men), a further chapter is dedicated to the proposition Shakespeare's first theatrical involvement was in a recusant Lancashire household, and a final chapter focuses on arguments for Shakespeare's membership in a half dozen other companies (most prominently Leicester's Men). Shakespeare's Companies simultaneously opens up twenty years of theatrical activity to inquiry and investigation while providing a critique of Shakespearean biographers and their historical methodologies.

Book Shakespeare Upstart Crow to Sweet Swan

Download or read book Shakespeare Upstart Crow to Sweet Swan written by Katherine Duncan-Jones and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and provocative study of the evolution of Shakespeare's image, building on the success of Duncan-Jones' acclaimed biography, Shakespeare: An Ungentle Life. Taking a broadly chronological approach, she investigates Shakespeare's changing reputation, as a man, an actor and a poet, both from his own viewpoint and from that of his contemporaries. Many different categories of material are explored, including printed books, manuscripts, literary and non-literary sources. Rather than a biography, the book is an exploration with biographical elements. The change in public opinion in Shakespeare's time is quite startling: Henry Chettle attacked him as an 'upstart Crow' in 1592, an attack from which Shakespeare sought to defend himself; and yet by the time of the First Folio in 1623 he had become the 'Sweet Swan of Avon!' and was fast becoming the national treasure he remains today. This engaging and fascinating study brings the politics and fashions of Shakespeare's literary and theatrical world vividly to life.
