Book Shadows on Bourbon Street

Download or read book Shadows on Bourbon Street written by Jack Rose and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2023-12-27 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1925, and New Orleans thrived in the paradox of its own unique heartbeat, the rhythmic pulse of jazz echoing through the narrow streets of the French Quarter, coiling around the wrought-iron balconies like the tendrils of a beguiling serpent. Gas lamps, flickering like distant stars, painted the cobblestone alleys with a sepia glow, casting shadows that danced to the soulful tunes pouring out of smoky jazz clubs. The city's heartbeat was jazz, an audible heartbeat that resonated from the pulsating heart of Basin Street to the dimly lit corners of Storyville. Trumpets wailed, saxophones wept, and the seductive melodies of the blues seeped into the very air, carrying the promise of hedonistic nights and clandestine rendezvous. Speakeasies, those secret sanctuaries of vice, flourished beneath the surface, hidden behind unmarked doors and guarded by watchful eyes. The Prohibition may have sought to silence the clinking of glasses, but in New Orleans, the clinking persisted, masked by the lively chatter of patrons enjoying the forbidden nectar of bootlegged spirits. The whispers of the Mississippi River, flowing with the untold tales of the city, mingled with the melodies that spilled onto the streets. Women in flapper dresses and men in sharp suits wove through the crowds, their laughter and hushed conversations adding to the vibrant tapestry of New Orleans nightlife. In this city of decadence and intrigue, where voodoo queens held court in dimly lit corners and the scent of gumbo lingered in the air like a bewitching perfume, secrets weren't buried; they were shared like lovers' whispers in the dark. The air in Sam Malone's office was thick with the acrid smell of cigarette smoke, the languid trails hovering like ghosts in the dim lamplight. Malone, a man well-acquainted with shadows, sat behind his worn mahogany desk, nursing a glass of bourbon that had seen better days. The flickering neon sign outside his window said: Private Investigator.

Book The Visual World of Shadows

Download or read book The Visual World of Shadows written by Roberto Casati and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the perception of shadows, studied by vision scientists and visual artists, reveals the inner workings of the visual system. In The Visual World of Shadows, Roberto Casati and Patrick Cavanagh examine how the perception of shadows, as studied by vision scientists and visual artists, reveals the inner workings of the visual system. Shadows are at once a massive problem for vision—which must distinguish them from objects or material features of objects—and a resource, signaling the presence, location, shape, and size of objects. Casati and Cavanagh draw up an inventory of information retrievable from shadows, showing their amazing variety. They present an overview of the visual system, distinguishing between measurement and inference. They discuss the shadow mission, the work done by the visual brain to parse, and perhaps discard, the information from shadows; shadow ownership, the association of a shadow with the object that casts it; shadow labeling, the visual system's ability to tell shadows from nonshadows; and the shadow concept, our knowledge about shadows as a category. Casati and Cavanagh then apply the theoretical apparatus they have developed for shadows to other phenomena: illumination, reflection, and transparency. Finally, they examine the art of the shadow, paying tribute to artists' exploration of shadow, analyzing a series of artworks (reproduced in color) from a rich and fascinating art historical corpus.

Book The Semiotics of Light and Shadows

Download or read book The Semiotics of Light and Shadows written by Piotr Sadowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lighting and shadows are used within a range of art forms to create aesthetic effects. Piotr Sadowski's study of light and shadow in Weimar cinema and contemporaneous visual arts is underpinned by the evolutionary semiotic theories of indexicality and iconicity. These theories explain the unique communicative and emotive power of light and shadow when used in contemporary indexical media including the shadow theatre, silhouette portraits, camera obscura, photography and film. In particular, Sadowski highlights the aesthetic and emotional significance of shadows. The 'cast shadow', as an indexical sign, maintains a physical connection with its near-present referent, such as a hidden person, stimulating a viewer's imagination and provoking responses including anxiety or curiosity. The 'cinematic shadow' plays a stylistic role, by enhancing image texture, depth of field, and tonal contrast of cinematic moments. Such enhancements are especially important in monochromatic films, and Sadowski interweaves the book with accounts of seminal Weimar cinema moments. Sadowski's book is distinctive for combining historical materials and theoretical approaches to develop a deeper understanding of Weimar cinema and other contemporary art forms. The Semiotics of Light and Shadows is an ideal resource for both scholars and students working in linguistics, semiotics, film, media, and visual arts.

Book The Aesthetics of Shadow

Download or read book The Aesthetics of Shadow written by Daisuke Miyao and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revealing study, Daisuke Miyao explores "the aesthetics of shadow" in Japanese cinema in the first half of the twentieth century. This term, coined by the production designer Yoshino Nobutaka, refers to the perception that shadows add depth and mystery. Miyao analyzes how this notion became naturalized as the representation of beauty in Japanese films, situating Japanese cinema within transnational film history. He examines the significant roles lighting played in distinguishing the styles of Japanese film from American and European film and the ways that lighting facilitated the formulation of a coherent new Japanese cultural tradition. Miyao discusses the influences of Hollywood and German cinema alongside Japanese Kabuki theater lighting traditions and the emergence of neon commercial lighting during this period. He argues that lighting technology in cinema had been structured by the conflicts of modernity in Japan, including capitalist transitions in the film industry, the articulation of Japanese cultural and national identity, and increased subjectivity for individuals. By focusing on the understudied element of film lighting and treating cinematographers and lighting designers as essential collaborators in moviemaking, Miyao offers a rereading of Japanese film history.
