Book Deeper Shades of Purple

Download or read book Deeper Shades of Purple written by Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of leading voices on the study of Black women in religious life Womanist approaches to the study of religion and society have contributed much to our understanding of Black religious life, activism, and women's liberation. Deeper Shades of Purple explores the achievements of this movement over the past two decades and evaluates some of the leading voices and different perspectives within this burgeoning field. Deeper Shades of Purple brings together a who's who of scholars in the study of Black women and religion who view their scholarship through a womanist critical lens. The contributors revisit Alice Walker's definition of womanism for its viability for the approaches to discourses in religion of Black women scholars. Whereas Walker has defined what it means to be womanist, these contributors define what it means to practice womanism, and illuminate how womanism has been used as a vantage point for the theoretical orientations and methodological approaches of Black women scholar-activists. Contributors: Karen Baker-Fletcher, Katie G. Cannon, M. Shawn Copeland, Kelly Brown Douglas, Carol B. Duncan, Stacey M. Floyd-Thomas, Rachel Elizabeth Harding, Rosemarie Freeney Harding, Melanie L. Book Port Jackson Pullers

Download or read book Port Jackson Pullers written by Stephen Gard and published by BlueDawe Books. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia had sporting champions before it had self-government. The earliest champions were watermen. A waterman’s trade was working small boats, and a waterman’s sport was racing them. In the many splendid bays and coves of Port Jackson, and along reaches of the Parramatta River, ‘pullers’ won their rowing laurels and (sometimes) made their fortune. Australia’s first six champion oarsmen are the stars of Port Jackson Pullers. These men led the way to the nation’s future dominance of the World Sculling Championship. Until now, any history of Australian sculling began in the year 1876, when Edward Trickett won the Championship of the Thames. But Trickett emerged from a well-organised aquatic sport which was flourishing on the waters of Port Jackson decades before he first stepped into a boat. John Brennan, George Mulhall, Thomas McGrath, Richard Green, William Hickey, and James Punch: six names that deserve honour in the world of rowing. Champions all, and all of humble origin, they fathered and furthered Australian professional sculling. Richard Green took it furthest of all, to the River Thames where, in 1863, he raced Britain’s best for the Championship of the World. Professional rowing was not established in Port Jackson without colour or controversy. In rough-and-tumble colonial times, good sportsmanship was an optional extra. Port Jackson Pullers revives and explores this vigorous, and occasionally villainous scene.

Book The Rain Drop and Other Shades of Prosetry

Download or read book The Rain Drop and Other Shades of Prosetry written by Patrick Mandidi and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word prosetry does not exist. But the author of this book of prosetry uses it to describe the presentation of prose in a manner that attempts to depict the aims and objectives of poetry. The Rain Drop and Other Shades of Prosetry is written in five sections. The first is The Rain Drop and tells of an author who has just achieved great success. He reflects back on an embarrassing incident that happened when he was six, and which comes to mind whenever it rains. The second story, The Priest, is about a man who became a priest by accident, but grows to love his chosen profession. Then he is presented a great temptation when he meets a woman who resembles a girl he loved as a teenager. The Cricketer shows the game through the eyes of an experienced player, one about to go through a very unusual experience during a cricket match. In The Driver, the anxieties of an aging Formula One racecar driver show what happens during what could be the last year of his racing career. In the fifth and final story, The Admirer, the anguish of a young man who has fallen madly in love with a girl he has never spoken with is told in prosetry.

Here we see literature, film and photography used to challenge received ideas of urban history in the declining years of Portugal's Estado Novo dictatorship. After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive. A Darker Shade of Magic — Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand. A Gathering of Shadows — Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. And while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Element Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. A Conjuring of Light — As darkness sweeps the Maresh Empire, the once precarious balance of power among the four Londons has reached its breaking point. In the wake of tragedy, Kell—once assumed to be the last surviving Antari—begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. Lila Bard has survived and flourished through a series of magical trials. But now she must learn to control the magic, before it bleeds her dry. Tor books by V. E.
