Book Religion and Technology in India

Download or read book Religion and Technology in India written by Knut A. Jacobsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion tends to flourish when technological developments create new possibilities for communication and representation, and simultaneously change as a consequence of these developments. This book explores intersections between religion and technology in India, at the present and in the colonial past, and how various forms of techno-religious intersections transform and open up for new religious practices, discourses, communities, and institutions. With focus on Indian contexts and religions, it discusses various empirical and theoretical aspects of how technological innovations create, alter, and negotiate religious spaces, practices and authorities. The book provides rich and multifaceted empirical examples of different ways in which technological practices relate to meanings, ideas, and practices of religions. The techno-religious intersections generate several questions about authority and power, the politics and poetics of identity, community and place, and how religious agency, information, and experience are mediated, commodified, and adjusted to new demands of societies. The chapters explore the Hindu, Jain, and Sikh traditions in relation to new technological developments and media, such as photography, new means of visualization, TV serials, mobile phones, and online communication. The book will be of interest to academics studying modern and contemporary India and South Asia, and especially the role of religion and technology.

Book excerpt: Ramayana is one of the most popular epics in the world, having been translated into various languages. It is a tale of Ram, the prince of Ayodhya, who was banished to the forest for 14 years. To honour his father's word, he agreed to be exiled without any murmur or rancour. In the forest, Ram, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman met saints, new friends and strange foes. Each day brought new adventures. But their spartan, yet happy life was spoilt when Ravan of Lanka, the king of demons, abducted Sita. To rescue her, Ram enlisted the help of the vanar sena (monkey army) of Hanuman. In that battle many heroes died and new ones had come alive. The book Ramayana Tales for Children is a compilation of 40 one-page stories for children. Language used is plain and simple. Each story unfolds the way original epic proceeds. Long details have been dispensed with while retaining the essence that children can easily grasp. The stories come with realistic caricature based illustrations to retain interest of young readers. In this vividly told vibrant version for children, the ancient epic unfolds many unpredictable twists and turns. The traditional ingredients are all there - adventure and excitement, love and war and an infinite number of stories within stories, as are the traditional characters - monkeys, who cross a sea to lay floating bridge and also carry on their finger life-giving herbs found only on a mountain, besides shape-changing demons and monsters of many varieties. The epic has been rendered traditional and contemporary by the freshness and vitality of the author J.M.Mehta and exuberant illustrations that retain the interest of children till the last.

His is the rare (indeed, the only one of its kind) personality that will even risk his life to keep a promise, and to protect those who have approached him for shelter. Book The God Market

  • Author : Meera Nanda
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2011-10-01
  • ISBN : 1583673105
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book The God Market written by Meera Nanda and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom says that integration into the global marketplace tends to weaken the power of traditional faith in developing countries. But, as Meera Nanda argues in this path-breaking book, this is hardly the case in today’s India. Against expectations of growing secularism, India has instead seen a remarkable intertwining of Hinduism and neoliberal ideology, spurred on by a growing capitalist class. It is this “State-Temple-Corporate Complex,” she claims, that now wields decisive political and economic power, and provides ideological cover for the dismantling of the Nehru-era state-dominated economy. According to this new logic, India’s rapid economic growth is attributable to a special “Hindu mind,” and it is what separates the nation’s Hindu population from Muslims and others deemed to be “anti-modern.” As a result, Hindu institutions are replacing public ones, and the Hindu “revival” itself has become big business, a major source of capital accumulation. Nanda explores the roots of this development and its possible future, as well as the struggle for secularism and socialism in the world’s second-most populous country.

Book The Colors of Violence

Download or read book The Colors of Violence written by Sudhir Kakar and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades India has been intermittently tormented by brutal outbursts of religious violence, thrusting thousands of ordinary Hindus and Muslims into bloody conflict. In this provocative work, psychoanalyst Sudhir Kakar exposes the psychological roots of Hindu-Muslim violence and examines with grace and intensity the subjective experience of religious hatred in his native land. With honesty, insight, and unsparing self-reflection, Kakar confronts the profoundly enigmatic relations that link individual egos to cultural moralities and religious violence. His innovative psychological approach offers a framework for understanding the kind of ethnic-religious conflict that has so vexed social scientists in India and throughout the world. Through riveting case studies, Kakar explores cultural stereotypes, religious antagonisms, ethnocentric histories, and episodic violence to trace the development of both Hindu and Muslim psyches. He argues that in early childhood the social identity of every Indian is grounded in traditional religious identifications and communalism. Together these bring about deep-set psychological anxieties and animosities toward the other. For Hindus and Muslims alike, violence becomes morally acceptable when communally and religiously sanctioned. As the changing pressures of modernization and secularism in a multicultural society grate at this entrenched communalism, and as each group vies for power, ethnic-religious conflicts ignite. The Colors of Violence speaks with eloquence and urgency to anyone concerned with the postmodern clash of religious and cultural identities.
