Book excerpt: Ghosts, precognition, suicide, and the afterlife are all themes in these thrilling stories by Britain and America's greatest Victorian women, proving their talent for creating dark, sensational, and horrifying tales of the supernatural. This anthology showcases some of the best and most representative work by female writers during this period, including Emily Bronte, Mary Braddon, George Eliot, and Edith Nesbit, as well as Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte Riddell, Louisa Baldwin, Mary Penn, Violet Quirk, and Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. Editor Mike Ashley provides valuable insight into the authors' lives. Each story still has the ability to shock, frighten, and show how Victorian women perfected and developed the Gothic genre.

Book Sex and the Paranormal

Download or read book Sex and the Paranormal written by Paul Deane and published by Collins & Brown. This book was released on 2003-04-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You thought sex was a 'had to be there', physical experience? And that it takes, well, living beings to make the walls shake? Think again! This book peers for the first time into the dark corners of those places where a basic human physical desire and natural activity meets with an equally fervent and longstanding fascination with the unknown, mysterious and supernatural. From sex and witchcraft to demon lovers, all forms of human sexual encounter with the supernatural - real, fabled or imagined - are presented and thoroughly turned over in this thought-provoking and revelatory book. Sensational, it most certainly is. The book's central focus is on the thousands of reports of human sexual encounters with supernatural beings that have occurred over the years (irresistible chapter titles include 'Satanism in the suburbs' and 'Aliens stole my virginity!'). The encounters are startlingly common, with people claiming to have had sex with ghosts, aliens, demons, poltergeists, old hags and angels. Then there are the strange examples of penissnatching epidemics, outbreaks of suburban sexual mass hysteria and the belief in secret supernatural orgies. The wealth of stories is amazing and the experiences and phenomena they purport to describe are almost beyond belief. The author has the truly unique talent of entertaining and providing a serious account of the strange phenomena. This is a book everyone will want to read (even if they pretend they don't...).

Book Sex Workers Psychics and Numbers Runners

Download or read book Sex Workers Psychics and Numbers Runners written by LaShawn Harris and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early twentieth century, a diverse group of African American women carved out unique niches for themselves within New York City's expansive informal economy. LaShawn Harris illuminates the labor patterns and economic activity of three perennials within this kaleidoscope of underground industry: sex work, numbers running for gambling enterprises, and the supernatural consulting business. Mining police and prison records, newspaper accounts, and period literature, Harris teases out answers to essential questions about these women and their working lives. She also offers a surprising revelation, arguing that the burgeoning underground economy served as a catalyst in working-class black women TMs creation of the employment opportunities, occupational identities, and survival strategies that provided them with financial stability and a sense of labor autonomy and mobility. At the same time, urban black women, all striving for economic and social prospects and pleasures, experienced the conspicuous and hidden dangers associated with newfound labor opportunities.

Book Horrifying Sex

Download or read book Horrifying Sex written by Ruth Bienstock Anolik and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-07-16 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gothic moment in literary history arose in the age of the Enlightenment, and the Gothic fascination with the unknown reflects the Enlightenment's response to the limits of reason. Traditionally, the emblem of the unknown that lurks in the Gothic is the supernatural, the monstrous, and the inhuman. Often overlooked is the observation that Gothic texts are also haunted by figures that represent the mystery of sexuality. This collection of essays sharpens that observation and asserts that Gothic anxieties about sexuality are likewise rooted in fear of the unknown, represented by sexual practices and desires that either lie hidden or deviate from cultural norms. The first three sections refer to popular as well as marginalized Gothic texts to portray the three prototypes of sexual "deviance": the female sexual Other in "The Fatal Woman"; the male sexual Other in "The Satanic Male"; and the homosexual Other in "Homosexual Horror." The fourth section covers literary works that celebrate sexual difference and question the idea that the sexually "deviant" is socially Other.

  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Undefiled written by David Grams and published by . This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the shocking, untold truths about marriage and sexuality contained in the overlooked pages of the Bible. In an exhaustive yet concise revelation, David Grams explains what the Bible really teaches about sex and why the Church has been getting it wrong for so many years. Porn, masturbation, divorce, promiscuity, homosexuality & the LGBTQ agenda...all these things are address in this book from a purely biblical perspective. But, above all else, the author praises the unrivaled power and beauty of sex in the covenant of marriage. The truths in this book will heal your perception of sexuality and redeem your experience of love and marriage back to what God first created in the Garden of Eden. Whether you're a teenager, single, dating, engaged, married, divorced or separated, you will benefit greatly from the teaching in this book. Any amount of research will tell you that sexuality is one of the most controversial and widely debated topics of our modern world. Even in Christianity, almost no other subject evokes more controversy. People are generally confused, uninformed, indifferent, and uncomfortable when it comes to talking about sex. With the rising popularity of liberalistic sexual orientations and expressions in our culture, it's crucial that we, as Christians, clearly understand what God says about this often hidden but critically important part of our lives. Undefiled will teach you that there is almost nothing else in our natural life, that God has created, that is as spiritually significant and as powerful as sex. Sex was God's idea, and He made it for a purpose. It's even a form of worship and a powerful weapon against the forces of darkness. If we understand the purpose of sex, we can heal marriages, protect from heartache, replace confusion with clarity, and ultimately, pave the way for this emerging generation to live in a radically powerful and godly sexuality. Why did God create sex anyway? What should sex look like in a marriage? How does a sex life become supernaturally powerful? Is sex before marriage sinful? What about homosexuality? What about masturbation? Why is pornography harmful, and how do I break an addiction to it? All these questions and more are answered in this book. Book Demon Lovers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter Stephens
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2003-08-15
  • ISBN : 9780226772622
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book Demon Lovers written by Walter Stephens and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-08-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 20, 1587, Walpurga Hausmännin of Dillingen in southern Germany was burned at the stake as a witch. Although she had confessed to committing a long list of maleficia (deeds of harmful magic), including killing forty—one infants and two mothers in labor, her evil career allegedly began with just one heinous act—sex with a demon. Fornication with demons was a major theme of her trial record, which detailed an almost continuous orgy of sexual excess with her diabolical paramour Federlin "in many divers places, . . . even in the street by night." As Walter Stephens demonstrates in Demon Lovers, it was not Hausmännin or other so-called witches who were obsessive about sex with demons—instead, a number of devout Christians, including trained theologians, displayed an uncanny preoccupation with the topic during the centuries of the "witch craze." Why? To find out, Stephens conducts a detailed investigation of the first and most influential treatises on witchcraft (written between 1430 and 1530), including the infamous Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches). Far from being credulous fools or mindless misogynists, early writers on witchcraft emerge in Stephens's account as rational but reluctant skeptics, trying desperately to resolve contradictions in Christian thought on God, spirits, and sacraments that had bedeviled theologians for centuries. Proof of the physical existence of demons—for instance, through evidence of their intercourse with mortal witches—would provide strong evidence for the reality of the supernatural, the truth of the Bible, and the existence of God. Early modern witchcraft theory reflected a crisis of belief—a crisis that continues to be expressed today in popular debates over angels, Satanic ritual child abuse, and alien abduction.
