The subjectivity and misinterpretation of the core value service before self introduce varying understandings and misapplication that lead to worklife imbalance and mental health disorders. This paper will propose that the core value service before self prompts Airmen to subordinate their wellbeing and mental health to operational and organizational requirements. The research will reflect on how the core value results in work-life imbalance, identify the impacts of the misinterpretation and misapplication of the core value and correlate mental health disorders and associated stigma with service before self. The author will share personal observations of the misapplication of service before self and its impact on Airmen's quality of life. Eric Klein’s Four Quadrant model will rationalize the need to update current core values. The event had, however, been marred by the absence of Ron’s 19-year-old son, Josh. Among the sacrifices Ron made in his pursuit of career success was time with his family. His strained relationship with Josh is testament to that sacrifice. Attempts to motivate his son led to resentment and distrust. If only Josh could look up to Ron as Ron looked up to his own father, a man he had never known. George Cody had died during the D-Day invasion when Ron was only five years old. The bitterness Josh feels is due to his father having been largely absent for most of his childhood. The General’s Air Force service just seemed more important. He is further rocked by increasing doubts that his own father was the war hero Ron had been led to believe. For Josh, things look up when he meets a young woman and eventually becomes close to her nine-year-old son. When the woman returns to the abusive man who had fathered her son, Josh’s world threatens to collapse. As events unfold, both men discover that there is more than one way to serve. Even more consequentially, they are forced to confront the tremendous power and importance of the father-son bond. This book develops the lineage from Armies of the ancient world to today's modern Armies in a rather concise and insightful manner. Sir John Hackett focuses a lot on the relationship between the military forces and the countries they represent on the battlefield. He also offers some interesting opinions about training future leaders in the Armed Services based on his vast military experience and career. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (it has many interesting photos and prints throughout the text), although it is written from a European (the author is British) perspective. The author does devote some time to the US Army, but his main focus is the European military system. Therefore, if you are looking for a book about how the American Army has changed over time, I do not recommend this one. On the other hand, I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how the profession of arms has developed over time. It would make a fine addition to your military history library if you have one, or serve as a great first addition, if you are thinking of starting one. -- website.

In short, they weren't cutting the mustard, but there was no time for a long development project. At Fort Knox, Kentucky, the newly-formed 781st Tank Battalion was detailed to run an around-the-clock marathon comparison test on forty Sherman tanks to find the best available configuration and fastest solution. When the results of the "Million Dollar Tank Test" were collected, what resulted was the Sherman "Easy Eight", an easier to manufacture tank that was also such an effective fighting vehicle that it would serve for another thirty years. The 781st Tank Battalion shipped out to Europe, where, equipped with the "Easy Eight", it thwarted Hitler's last major offensive in the West -- Operation Nordwind -- and swept southern Germany as the tip of the U.S. Seventh Army's sword.
