Book Preaching from the Minor Prophets

Download or read book Preaching from the Minor Prophets written by Elizabeth Rice Achtemeier and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the authority and theological richness of the twelve books of the Minor Prophets, these Old Testament writings are perennially neglected by the church and the pulpit. This volume was written to provide clergy with the tools to once again preach from these important texts with confidence and relevancy. For each of the twelve Minor Prophets, Elizabeth Achtemeier provides a wealth of information useful for preparing a sermon: recommended commentaries, historical context, theological context, and sections dealing with selected texts. These sections include (1) a brief treatment of linguistic and rhetorical features to note, (2) suggested sermon titles designed to arouse the interest of a congregation, and (3) homiletical exposition intended to stimulate preachers as they develop their sermons. An excellent guide to the books of the Minor Prophets, this volume is unique for its theological depth, presented in clear and simple language for clergy and laity alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the world is coming. From roadside signs to science fiction films, this slogan underscores our society’s nervous fascination with the future. Whether it’s a giant asteroid, a worldwide plague, or some other global catastrophe, the end of the world is a terrifying prospect—at least for those who have no idea what it will be like. For Christians, however, the end of the world should be anything but dreadful. In fact, it should be something we actually look forward to. Why? Because God has told us how the world will end. And He has assured us that the end of this age will mark the beginning of a new, glorious one in which we will serve and worship Him in sinless perfection. Our eternal hope, as believers, is intimately tied to the end of this world. All of this is laid out in the book of Revelation. Not only is Revelation the inspired Word of God, it is also the only New Testament book that includes a promised spiritual blessing for those who study and apply its message. As such, it is an essential part of every Christian’s devotional life. Those who ignore Revelation deprive themselves of a rich treasure of divine truth, and the promised blessings that come from understanding that truth. Join John MacArthur as he explains the book of Revelation in a way that is both doctrinally precise and intensely practical.

Book Preaching from the Old Testament

Download or read book Preaching from the Old Testament written by Walter Brueggemann and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new volume, prolific scholar Walter Brueggemann seeks to show Christian preachers how to consider the faith witnessed in several Old Testament traditions and to help them discover rich and suggestive connections to our contemporary faith challenges. The author also assumes that a wholesale sustained engagement with the Old Testament is worth the effort for the preacher. He recognizes what he calls the "sorry state" of Old Testament texts in the Revised Common Lectionary, which he claims often constitute a major disservice for the church and its preachers. The lectionary gerrymanders the Old Testament to make it serve other claims, most of the time not allowing it to have its own evangelical say. Brueggemann hopes that his exposition in this volume will evoke and energize fresh homiletical attention to the Old Testament, precisely because he believes the urgent work of the gospel in our society requires attentive listening to these ancient voices of bold insistent faith.

Book excerpt: The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah? In Priest, Prophet, King, you'll discover Jesus as the Anointed One - the ultimate priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Father Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. This deeply biblical program presents the Old Testament foreshadowing of each of Jesus' three offices as priest, prophet and king and then describes how Jesus is the fulfillment of each as seen in the New Testament. The Study Guide includes commentary, Questions for Understanding, and Questions for Application. Through this presentation of Priest, Prophet, King, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission.

Book Major Messages from Minor Prophets

Download or read book Major Messages from Minor Prophets written by Jeffrey A. Ingraham and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early part of 2019, our Sunday school lessons centered on the Old Testament prophets, particularly the minor prophets. It was a great challenge to understand their messages and the messages' relevancy for our times. It seemed as if there really were no significant differences in these books of prophecy, as the minor prophets all seemed to be saying the same thing. Of course, there are differences in the messages and ministries of the minor prophets, hence, my attempt to show so. My goal was to summarize the writings and ministries of the minor prophets and show their relevancy for today. This I did through a series of sermons that were initially delivered in the Calvary Baptist Church during the winter of 2019. My goal was to make the teachings of the minor prophets understandable to every segment of our membership. The approach was more inspirational than overly scholarly. Each chapter of the book is provocatively titled and begins with a story or illustration that centers on that particular subject. The intent was to reference something that the reader could relate to and see how the prophet addresses that matter. Of course, not every single detail of the prophet's message is included due to the constraints of time, etc. My hope is that the readers of this book will come to know God better and to have a relationship with him. They will see that in spite of people's imperfections, our God is perfect and faithful toward us. The minor prophets challenge us to live faithfully for God. To the extent I have been able to evoke this kind of response from my readers, I give all glory and honor to God.

Book Loving God and Disturbing Men

Download or read book Loving God and Disturbing Men written by Donald A. Leggett and published by Clements Publishing Group. This book was released on 2003 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loving God and Disturbing Men is an excellent resource for preachers and teachers that provides a balance between technical scholarly commentaries and popular devotional works. Its unique strength lies in the author's ability to show the relevance of the prophets for the contemporary church and its ministry. Readers will appreciate the detailed scholarly treatment of the prophetic literature the author provides. But equally important, the author demonstrates that what the prophets said about God, evil, repentance, history, social justice and eschatology has the ring of immediacy for us. Moreover, the study is helpful in treating the lives of the prophets as models of spirituality in prayer, suffering and preaching. While the book is primarily for those who preach from the prophets, it is suitable for a much wider audience. "A book on preaching from the prophets is desperately needed today by the Christian audience if we are to be faithful in declaring the whole counsel of God to our contemporary generation. Professor Donald Leggett is to be commended on his desire to aid the Christian community and its proclaimers in advancing this cause. It is a pleasure to commend this work." -Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. "Here is a pump-primer and launch-pad for preachers. Dr. Leggett's aim is to show us the wisdom of the prophets in a way that will excite us an enable us to share what we have seen. I appreciate this book, for I think it will do its job. And the job is an important one " -J. I. Packer Donald A. Leggett (Th.D., Free University, Amsterdam) is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, Ontario. For 25 years he also served as a pastor and elder at Village Green Baptist Church in London, Ontario.
