Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN perusing these pages, it will be well to make and to bear in mind a distinction between the manner and the matter of the work. The manner, such as it is, belongs to the author, but, on the other hand, little or no attempt has been made at originality -in doctrine or thought. In the seminary it was much insisted on that every priest, ana more especially every young priest, should have continually beside him some suitable means wherewith to occupy ,his spare time. Accordingly, the study and the adaptation of that most excellent work the "Conciones Sacrce " of Cardinal Bellarmin, S.J., have been found in this instance a very pleasant and a very profitable employment. The first design was to translate the sermons verbatim, but, both on account of their extreme diffuseness and because, as originally written, they do not constitute a complete course for the year, that idea proved impracticable. From a study of the work as a whole, therefore, and out of the resulting mass of matter, a sermon for each Sunday, and for a few of the principal festivals of the year has been evolved. Some extraneous thoughts, encountered in a course of desultory reading and drawn chiefly from Fr. Segneri, S.J., and Padre Agostino da Montefeltro, have been pressed into service to supplement the Gardinal's homilies. These latter have helped the present writer so often and so much in the routine of parish work that it is most earnestly hoped they may prove of assistance to others, and that this or any similar attempt, however humble, to bring out into the light these and the many other gems of Cathol1c thought and sentiment may meet with popular approval.

Book Latin Anonymous Sermons from Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages Ad 300 800

Download or read book Latin Anonymous Sermons from Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages Ad 300 800 written by Matthieu Pignot and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the international conference on anonymous sermons funded by the F.R.S-FNRS and held on 16 May 2019 at the Universite de Namur (Belgium), within the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and the research centre Pratiques Medievales de l'Ecrit (PraME). It brings together scholars working on late antique and early medieval Latin preaching and considers for the first time anonymous sermons as an object of study in its own right. The sermons here studied are Christian Latin preached texts, thought to date from the period c. 300-800 AD, which are not currently attributed to a known author. Long neglected because of their uncertain attribution, these sermons however offer new material for the study of late antique and early medieval Christianity. The contributions assembled here provide an essential entry point to the study of these little-known sermons: after an introduction which sets the aims of the book, discusses methodological issues and the state of the art and describes main avenues for research, individual papers present future tools to classify sermons and explore their medieval transmission in manuscripts, offer new critical editions of previously unknown sermons, and develop methods and reliable criteria to shed new light on their historical context of composition. Both engaging with current issues and challenges to the study of anonymous sermons and offering innovative case studies, this book opens up new ground for future research on late antique and early medieval Latin Christian preaching in general.

Book Latin Sermon Collections from Later Medieval England

Download or read book Latin Sermon Collections from Later Medieval England written by Siegfried Wenzel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-17 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the Reformation, almost all sermons were written down in Latin. This is the first scholarly study systematically to describe and analyse the collections of Latin sermons from the golden age of medieval preaching in England, the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Basing his studies on the extant manuscripts, Siegfried Wenzel analyses these sermons and the occasions when they were given. Larger issues of preaching in the later Middle Ages such as the pastoral concern about preaching, originality in sermon making, and the attitudes of orthodox preachers to Lollardy, receive detailed attention. The surviving sermons and their collections are listed for the first time in full inventories, which supplement the critical and contextual material Wenzel presents. This book is an important contribution to the study of medieval preaching, and will be essential for scholars of late medieval literature, history and religious thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blickling Homilies date from the end of the tenth century and form one of the earliest extant collections of English vernacular homiletic writings. The homiletic texts survive in a composite codex consisting of Municipal Entries for the Council of Lincoln (14th - 17th century), a Calendar (mid 15th century), Gospel Oaths (early 14th century), and the eighteen homiletic texts that are based on the yearly liturgical cycle. The Blickling Homilies are an important literary milestone in the early evolution of the English prose. The manuscript, in the collection of William H. Scheide housed in Princeton University Library (MS. 71, s.x/xi), was published in facsimile by Rudolph Willard in 1960 as Volume 10 of Early English Manuscripts in Facsimile, Copenhagen. It is the only Anglo-Saxon MS still in private ownership, and together with The Blickling Psalter are the only two Anglo-Saxon MSS in the Americas. The only previous edition of The Blickling Homilies is by Richard Morris, published in three volumes in 1874, 1876, & 1880 (reprinted as one volume in 1967). This new edition makes a number of corrections where Morris's manuscript reading is in error. The English translations are modernized and made more accurate. The original text and facing-page translation have been formatted into paragraphs, which are hoped to further and aid comprehension. Finally, the text and translation are accompanied by a general introduction, textual notes on each homiletic text, tables and charts, and a select bibliography.

Book The Sermons and Liturgy of Saint James

Download or read book The Sermons and Liturgy of Saint James written by Thomas F. Coffey and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pilgrimage route to Compostela is graced with an exceptional witness from its early days: the Liber Sancti Jacobi or Book of Saint James. This book is found most famously in a twelfth-century manuscript from the library of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, as well as in various other manuscripts. The text provides an encyclopedia on Saint James the Great and on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the traditional site of his burial in Galicia in northwestern Spain. Of the five books included in the manuscript, Book I, the longest, contains the Sermons and Liturgy of Saint James. It is published here in English translation for the first time. It consists of two major sections: the first contains sermons and readings on Saint James, and the second presents a compendium of liturgical prose, poetry, and musical material suitable for the feasts of Saint James. Book I is accompanied here with the first full translation of the addenda that consists of material gathered subsequent to the compilation of the original five books and that was inserted at its end. The sermons and readings include works attributed to Pope Calixtus and Pope Leo, and others authored by Gregory the Great, Jerome, Bede, Eusebius, Augustine, and John Chrysostom. These sermons and readings stand as self-contained units that fit into the liturgies. The liturgical material is a compendium of readings and music for the feast days related to Saint James, including his Calling, Translatio, Passion, and Miracles. The musical pieces are the most extensive collection of musical materials dedicated to a single saint in the twelfth century. They include antiphons, responsorials, hymns, and processionals, with both older and original melodies. This book of the Liber Sancti Jacobi provides a picture of the power and importance of the saint, reflecting his significance and that of Santiago de Compostela, along with Rome and Jerusalem one of the three major Christian pilgrimage sites during the Middle Ages. 566 pages. Preface, introduction, notes, bibliography, index, and illustrations

Book Spiritual Calculations

Download or read book Spiritual Calculations written by Christine Cooper-Rompato and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval English sermons teem with examples of quantitative reasoning, ranging from the arithmetical to the numerological, and regularly engage with numerical concepts. Examining sermons written in Middle English and Latin, this book reveals that popular English-speaking audiences were encouraged to engage in a wide range of numerate operations in their daily religious practices. Medieval sermonists promoted numeracy as a way for audiences to appreciate divine truth. Their sermons educated audiences in a hybrid form of numerate practice—one that relied on individuals’ pragmatic quantitative reasoning, which, when combined with spiritual interpretations of numbers provided by the preacher, created a deep and rich sense in which number was the best way to approach the sacred mysteries of the world as well as to learn how one could best live as a Christian. Analyzing both published and previously unpublished sermons and sermon cycles, Christine Cooper-Rompato explores the use of numbers, arithmetic, and other mathematical operations to better understand how medieval laypeople used math as a means to connect with God. Spiritual Calculations enhances our understanding of medieval sermons and sheds new light on how receptive audiences were to this sophisticated rhetorical form. It will be welcomed by scholars of Middle English literature, medieval sermon studies, religious experience, and the history of mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First-rate scholars and preachers on four interpretive approaches to Paul and Romans Pauline scholarship is a minefield of differing schools of thought. Those who teach or preach on Paul can quickly get lost in the weeds of the various perspectives. How, then, can pastors today best preach Paul’s message? Scot McKnight and Joseph B. Modica have assembled this stellar one-stop guide exploring four major interpretive perspectives on the apostle Paul: Reformational, New, Apocalyptic, and Participationist. First elucidated by a scholarly essay, each perspective is then illuminated by three sermons expositing various passages from Paul’s magisterial letter to the Romans. Coming from such leading figures as Richard Hays, James Dunn, Fleming Rutledge, and Tom Schreiner, these essays and sermons splendidly demonstrate how each perspective on Paul brings valuable insights for preaching on Romans.
