It was the desire of the compiler to have given a Specimen of the writings of the Rev. William Tennent, Sen., but he has not been able to obtain one, and probably there is not one in existence; as Dr. Alexander, in his biography of him, says, Mr. Tennent, as far as we know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Life: Sermons and an EssayThe title of this collection of sermons has been happily chosen. It admirably indicates their motive and character. There is the larger life in Christ as well as the higher life in Him. As the one mounts voluntarily to heights of self-renunciation in His service which are over and above the level of His mere command, so the other pene trates more deeply the mind and will of God in Him, sees the marvellous depth and scope of the Truth He taught in all its endless applications, and rejoices to live and act in this wider outlook and range as they cannot who only narrowly believe and blindly obey.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In a New Way: Sermon-Essays on Well-Worn Subjects I have read and I have heard that the selection of an appropriate title for a work has always been a matter of serious deliberation for an author. This for the reason that many persons judge of a book by the cover, and SO they are, oftentimes, predisposed in favor of, or prejudiced against a work, by a glance at the title of the book, irre spective of the contents. In the opening biographical sketch, James M. Garretson introduces us to the things that influenced Alexander and how he sought to cultivate godliness in himself, the men he trained, and people to whom he ministered. Garretson reinforces this through fifty-six short excerpts from across the published writings of Alexander, allowing us to experience firsthand the richness of “Old Princeton” spirituality. The design is to introduce the spirituality and piety of the Reformed Profiles in Reformed Spirituality tradition by presenting descriptions of the lives of notable Christians with select passages from their works. This combination of biographical sketches and collected portions from primary sources gives a taste of the subjects’ contributions to our spiritual heritage and some direction as to how the reader can find further edification through their works. It is the hope of the publishers that this series will provide riches for those areas where we are poor and light of day where we are stumbling in the deepening twilight.

Book excerpt: A re-discovered masterpiece of reporting by a literary icon and a celebrated photographer In 1941, James Agee and Walker Evans published Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, a 400-page prose symphony about three tenant farming families in Hale County, Alabama, at the height of the Great Depression. The book shattered journalistic and literary conventions. Critic Lionel Trilling called it the “most realistic and most important moral effort of our American generation.” The origins of Agee and Evans’s famous collaboration date back to an assignment for Fortune magazine, which sent them to Alabama in the summer of 1936 to report a story that was never published. Some have assumed that Fortune’s editors shelved the story because of the unconventional style that marked Famous Men, and for years the original report was presumed lost. But fifty years after Agee’s death, a trove of his manuscripts turned out to include a typescript labeled “Cotton Tenants.” Once examined, the pages made it clear that Agee had in fact written a masterly, 30,000-word report for Fortune. Published here for the first time, and accompanied by thirty of Walker Evans’s historic photos, Cotton Tenants is an eloquent report of three families struggling through desperate times. Indeed, Agee’s dispatch remains relevant as one of the most honest explorations of poverty in America ever attempted and as a foundational document of long-form reporting. As the novelist Adam Haslett writes in an introduction, it is “a poet’s brief for the prosecution of economic and social injustice.”
