Book Serbia and the Church of England

Download or read book Serbia and the Church of England written by Mark D. Chapman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive account of the changing ecumenical relationships between Britain and Serbia. While the impetus for the collection is the commemoration of the Serbian seminarians who settled in and around Oxford towards the end of the First World War, the scope is much broader, including detailed accounts of the relationships between the Church of England and Serbia and its Orthodox Church from the middle of the nineteenth century until World War II. It includes studies of leading thinkers from the period, especially the charismatic Nikolaj Velimirović. The contributors use many unpublished resources that reveal the centrality of the churches in promoting the Serbian cause through the course of the First World War and in its aftermath.

Book excerpt: Nikolaj Velimirovic (1880-1956) was a bishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an influential theological writer and political emigrant after the Communist takeover of Josip Broz Tito in Yugoslavia. He strongly supported the unity of all Orthodox churches and established particularly good relations with the Anglican and Episcopal Church. He obtained doctorates from the University of Berne (1908), while the thesis was published in German in 1910, whereas the doctor's degree in philosophy was prepared at Oxford and defended in Geneva (Filozofija Berklija: Berkeley's Philosophy in French) in 1909. At the end of 1909 he entered a monastic order. In 1919, then Archimandrite Nikolai was consecrated Bishop of the Monastery Zica of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1915 he was delegated to England and America by the Serbian Church, where he held numerous lectures, fighting for the union of the Serbs and South Slavic peoples. At the beginning of 1919 he returned to Serbia, and in 1920 was posted to the Ohrid archbishopric in Macedonia, where in 1935, in Bitola he reconstructed the cemetery of the fallen German soldiers from WWI.

Book Religion and Nationality in Serbia

Download or read book Religion and Nationality in Serbia written by Father Nicholas Velimirovic and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Nationality in Serbia No apology is needed for placing this remarkable little pamphlet within the reach of the British public; for it deals with a subject which deserves closer attention at the present time and strikes a highly original and sympathetic note. Its author, Father Nicholas Velimirovic, is a monk of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and has already at an early age won a reputation in his native country as a preacher and a profound theologian. He represents in its best form the new spirit which is awakening in the Serbian Church and from which many expect a serious movement of internal reform. His aim is to emphasize the great work performed by the Orthodox and Catholic clergy in kindling the flame of national feeling among the Southern Slavs, alike in free Serbia and Montenegro and in the unredeemed provinces of the Dual Monarchy. The tribute of an Orthodox monk to the memory of a great Catholic bishop is in keeping with the concluding appeal for Christian charity and unity. The translation is by Miss Fanny S. Copeland. Book Theology at War and Peace

Download or read book Theology at War and Peace written by Mark D. Chapman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first detailed discussion of the impact of the First World War on English theology. Assessing the close relationships between English and German theologians before the First World War, Chapman then explores developments throughout the war. A series of case studies make use of a large amount of unpublished material, showing how some theologians sought to maintain relationships with their German colleagues, while others, especially from a more Anglo-Catholic perspective, used the war as an opportunity to distance themselves from the liberal theology which was beginning to dominate the universities before the war. The increasing animosity between Britain and Germany meant that relations were never healed. English theology became increasingly insular, dividing between a more home-grown variety of liberalism and an ascendant Anglo-Catholicism. Consequently, this book offers useful insights into the development of theology in the twentieth century and will be of keen interest to scholars and students of the history of theology.

Book Balkan Contextual Theology

Download or read book Balkan Contextual Theology written by Stipe Odak and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opens a new research field in Balkan contextual theology. By embracing culturally rich traditions of the Western Balkans as its starting point, it explores their existential and theological bearings. Placed at the crossroads of civilisations and religions, this region has witnessed some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. At the same time, it has produced unique textures of inter-cultural life. The volume addresses some of the most poignant phenomena endemic to the region, such as sevdalinka music, intimate forms of neighborhood, archetypes of ‘sacred warriors,’ the experience of democratic jet lag, collective melancholy, and intergenerational trauma. As the first book of this nature, it aims to encourage further development of contextual theological thinking in the region and promote its international reception.
