Book The Reconstruction Desegregation Debate

Download or read book The Reconstruction Desegregation Debate written by Kirt H. Wilson and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade that followed the Civil War, two questions dominated political debate: To what degree were African Americans now “equal” to white Americans, and how should this equality be implemented in law? Although Republicans entertained multiple, even contradictory, answers to these questions, the party committed itself to several civil rights initiatives. When Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment, the 1866 Civil Rights Act, the Fourteenth Amendment, and the Fifteenth Amendment, it justified these decisions with a broad egalitarian rhetoric. This rhetoric altered congressional culture, instituting new norms that made equality not merely an ideal, but rather a pragmatic aim for political judgments. Kirt Wilson examines Reconstruction’s desegregation debate to explain how it represented an important movement in the evolution of U.S. race relations. He outlines how Congress fought to control the scope of black civil rights by contesting the definition of black equality, and the expediency and constitutionality of desegregation. Wilson explores how the debate over desegregation altered public memory about slavery and the Civil War, while simultaneously shaping a political culture that established the trajectory of race relations into the next century.

Download or read book Leadership for a Better World written by Susan R. Komives and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for Leadership for a Better World "What a powerful, very needed, and welcome sequel to A Social Change Model for Leadership Development Guidebook. It is a book for students, faculty, and everyone who engages in leadership for social change for a better world. It is an inspiring and liberating book in that it validates each one of us as we discover and practice the gifts we have been given." Helen S. Astin, professor emerita of higher education and senior scholar, Higher Education Research Institute, UCLA "While simple schemes and models of leadership can have their appeal, the more challenging view proposed in Leadership for a Better World is not only more realistic but infinitely more fulfilling. This form of leadership calls us to look at our own deep yearnings and then respect those of others in the amazing global community of the twenty-first century." Denny Roberts, assistant vice president for faculty and student services, Qatar Foundation "Positing that social change is at the heart of the leadership experience, Leadership for a Better World answers the question of 'leadership for what purpose?' Grounded in student experiences, this book includes student voices, stories, and contemporary case studies. Written in an informed and approachable tone, it provides a coherent set of guiding principles about how knowing oneself, meaningfully engaging with others, and adopting a systems perspective can promote the socially responsible leadership so needed in the world today." Julie E. Owen, assistant professor, Leadership and Integrative Studies, George Mason University

Book Beyond the Nation State

Download or read book Beyond the Nation State written by Ernst B. Haas and published by ECPR Press. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all of the books produced by Ernst B. Haas during his career, Beyond the Nation-State contains the most complete and definitive statement of 'neofunctionalism': the theory of transnational integration for which he is best known. Focusing on the International Labor Organization (ILO), Beyond the Nation-State was one of the first efforts to analyse systematically the dynamics and effects of a global international institution. Regarded as a classic in comparative politics and international relations, and among students of European integration, this book enjoyed a renaissance with the end of the cold war, reinvigorated European integration, and resumed interest in communitarian theorising about forms of global governance, which relied on a heightened role for international institutions and their associated policy communities. First published in 1964, Beyond the Nation-State was part of larger project described by others as neofunctionalism, regional integration, and soft constructivism, which animated Haas throughout his career. Beyond the Nation-State continues to provide valuable guidelines for describing and understanding contemporary IR, and is reissued with a new introduction by Peter M. Haas, John G. Ruggie, Philippe Schmitter and Antje Wiener, placing this important work in a current context.
