This program lead in 1957 to a book, which he wrote, Kids Say the Darndest Things. In life, children and seniors have little or no filters. They call it as they see it. If you want to know what someone really is thinking, ask a young child or a senior. HENCE, the origin of the title of this book. Not only do KIDS say the darndest things, but Seniors do also.

Book Octogenarians Say the Darndest Things

Download or read book Octogenarians Say the Darndest Things written by David L. Anders M. D. and published by . This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life doesn't begin at 80, but it doesn't have to end there either. This mother-son team of physicians with over 75 years of patient care experience recalls the humor, wisdom, pathos and surprises revealed while caring for this remarkable group of people. As David explains: As a child I loved watching Art Linkletter's House Party on television, especially when he would interview several children at a time with some fairly ordinary questions and get some fairly extraordinary (or unexpected) answers. In this segment, called Kids Say the Darndest Things, Art was constantly surprised by their candid and uninhibited answers to life's questions. As a geriatrician for 20 years, I have come to enjoy similar uninhibited answers that sometimes come from my older patients. Their responses, however, are not rooted in naivete, but are the results of years of experience and acquired wisdom from which they have to share. These experienced seniors are happy to speak up when asked, but they realize that wisdom is best received when volitionally pursued, not forcefully infused. I think many of my patients would agree with Ben Franklin who said, "I'd have no objection to living it all over again...But since repetition is impossible, the next best thing is to remember that life and to relate it to others." And relate they will, if we will serve as a receptive audience. When I first started medical school, my anatomy professor advised our class, "If all the world is a stage, you've just been given a front row seat to the show." Boy, was he right! And what a show it has been. I am much the richer for it, and hopefully after reading what these remarkable people say and do, you will be, too.

Book My Bible Says the Darndest Things

Download or read book My Bible Says the Darndest Things written by Pricely Francis and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to the Bible is exponentially more powerful than reading it. You pick up on fascinating, curious, and alarming things you miss when you read it: The serpent in Eden told the truth; Cain married a wife and built a city with a global population of only three people; women are sexual predators; disabled people desecrated Gods temple; the earth went into a counter revolution; God approved polygamy, and recommended slavery; a runaway slave got converted to Christianity and was promptly sent back to his slave master; the soon and imminent coming of Jesus is 2000 years over due! As the author listened to his Bible and compared what he heard with what is deemed appropriate, reasonable, and civilized in this modern era, he could not help but conclude that his Bible does say the darndest things.

Book Lifestyle Medicine Second Edition

Download or read book Lifestyle Medicine Second Edition written by James M. Rippe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 1633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that daily habits and actions exert a profound health impact. The fact that nutritional practices, level of physical activity, weight management, and other behaviors play key roles both in the prevention and treatment of most metabolic diseases has been recognized by their incorporation into virtually every evidence-based medical guideline. Despite this widespread recognition, physicians and other healthcare workers often cannot find a definitive and comprehensive source of information on all of these areas. Designed for physicians and other health care workers, Lifestyle Medicine, Second Edition brings together evidence-based research in multiple health-related fields to assist practitioners both in treating disease and promoting good health. Sections cover nutrition and exercise, behavioral psychology, public policy, and management of a range of disorders, including cardiovascular disease, endocrine and metabolic dysfunction, obesity, cancer, immunology and infectious diseases, pulmonary disorders, and many more.

Book The Masters Athlete

Download or read book The Masters Athlete written by Joe Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters athletes are those that continue to train and compete, typically at a high level, beyond the age of thirty-five and into middle and old age. As populations in the industrialized world get older and governments become increasingly keen to promote healthy aging and non-pharmacological interventions, the study of masters athletes enables us to better understand the benefits of, and motivations for, life-long involvement in physical activity. This is the first book to draw together current research on masters athletes. The Masters Athlete examines the evidence that cognitive skills, motor skills and physiological capabilities can be maintained at a high level with advancing age, and that age related decline is slowed in athletes that continue to train and compete in their later years. Including contributions from leading international experts in physiology, motor behaviour, psychology, gerontology and medicine, the book explores key issues such as: motivation for involvement in sport and physical activity across the lifespan evidence of lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes the maintenance of performance with age. Challenging conventional views of old age, and with important implications for policy and future research, this book is essential reading for students and practitioners working in sport and exercise science, aging and public health, human development, and related disciplines.

Book Gut Busters and Belly Laughs

Download or read book Gut Busters and Belly Laughs written by Steven D. Price and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although no one has ever said that growing old is a zany laugh riot, humor certainly eases the path to and through one’s golden years. And here is a heaping dose of jokes and anecdotes (anecdotes for one’s anec-dotage, you might say) to lighten and brighten the day of anyone who’s reached that certain age. You and the special senior in your life will laugh at jokes about a wide range of subjects, including . . . One-Liners: “I’ve learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.” —Andy Rooney Memory: A senior citizen driving on the highway received a cell phone call from his wife. “Herman, be careful! I just heard on the radio that there was a madman driving the wrong way on Route 280!” The husband replied, “I know, but there isn’t just one—there are hundreds!” Sex and the Senior: An eighty-two-year-old man went to his doctor for a physical. A few days later the doctor saw him walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. Several days later the doctor spoke to his patient and commented, “You’re really doing great, aren’t you?” The man replied, “I’m just doing what you said, Doc—‘Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.’” The doctor said, “I didn't say that. I said, ‘You’ve got a heart murmur. Be careful.’” Belly Laughs is a “lode” of fun for the young at heart of all ages, especially the golden age. Remember this bit of sage advice: “If you laugh a lot, when you get older your wrinkles will be in the right places.”
