Book Leaders and Legacies in Assyriology and Bible

Download or read book Leaders and Legacies in Assyriology and Bible written by David B. Weisberg and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Weisberg became fascinated by Assyriology as an undergraduate at Columbia University. Already endowed with a strong background in Hebraica, he soon came to know that he needed the deeper immersion of a graduate program, and he enrolled at Yale to pursue it. David’s interests soon focused on the Chaldean Dynasty of Nebuchadnezzar and the Achaemenid Dynasty of Cyrus the Great. Weisberg’s thesis succeeded in illuminating the wider significance of some previously unpublished cuneiform texts from this period?as well as earning him the doctorate. The thesis appeared in the recently established Yale Near Eastern Researches (1967) under the somewhat daunting title Guild Structure and Political Allegiance in Early Achaemenid Mesopotamia, and David’s career was launched. Weisberg’s oeuvre, as exemplified by the nearly three dozen essays conveniently assembled in this volume, attest both to his prodigious industriousness and to the loss that the field of Assyriology has suffered in his untimely demise. As is clear from the Table of Contents, he continued to make major contributions to the study of the Neo-Babylonian period (especially regarding political and military history and the doings of ancient royals) but he also offered seminal insights in other areas, including Masoretic studies, rabbinics, social and economic life of the ancient Near East, as well as the interface between modern culture and study of the ancient world. —Based on W. W. Hallo’s “Introduction”

Book Primitive Semitic Religion Today

Download or read book Primitive Semitic Religion Today written by Samuel I. Curtiss and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-03-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Curtiss was a critical scholar who often departed from the reigning consensus of his day. Near the end of his career, Curtiss turned his attention to the Near East. He, like Wellhausen, believed that Israelite religion was a manifestation of a primitive Semitic religion that could best be recovered by a careful investigation of the practices of contemporary Arabian Bedouin. Curtiss spent fourteen months in the Near East to research this hypothesis, recording his discoveries in this book.

Book Perspectives on the History of Ancient Near Eastern Studies

Download or read book Perspectives on the History of Ancient Near Eastern Studies written by Agnès Garcia-Ventura and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume collects eighteen essays exploring the history of ancient Near Eastern studies. Combining diverse approaches—synthetic and analytic, diachronic and transnational—this collection offers critical reflections on the who, why, and how of this cluster of fields. How have political contexts determined the conduct of research? How do academic agendas reflect larger social, economic, and cultural interests? How have schools of thought and intellectual traditions configured, and sometimes predetermined, the study of the ancient Near East? Contributions treating research during the Nazi and fascist periods examine the interpenetration of academic work with politics, while contributions dealing with specific national contexts disclose fresh perspectives on individual scholars as well as the conditions and institutions in which they worked. Particular attention is given to scholarship in countries such as Turkey, Portugal, Iran, China, and Spain, which have hitherto been marginal to historiographic accounts of ancient Near Eastern studies. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Selim Ferru Adali, Silvia Alaura, Isabel Almeida, Petr Charvát, Parsa Daneshmand, Eva von Dassow, Hakan Erol, Sebastian Fink, Jakob Flygare, Pietro Giammellaro, Carlos Gonçalves, Katrien de Graef, Steven W. Holloway, Ahmed Fatima Kzzo, Changyu Liu, Patrick Maxime Michel, Emanuel Pfoh, Jitka Sýkorová, Luděk Vacín, and Jordi Vidal.

Book excerpt: Bruce Zuckerman has transformed the way we look at ancient Semitic inscriptions. Through his efforts, the most important inscriptions of biblical times have been reread and the history of the biblical and Second Temple periods reimagined. He has made contributions to the fields of biblical studies and modern Judaism, and, in founding Maarav: A Journal for the Study of the Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures, has made the research of many scholars available to the scholarly community. The series of articles included here honor his many contributions through discussions of a wide variety of inscriptional materials, Biblical texts, archaeology, lexicography and teaching methodology. Included in the volume is a republication of his path breaking exhibition catalogue, Puzzling Out the Past.

Book Orientalism Assyriology and the Bible

Download or read book Orientalism Assyriology and the Bible written by Steven Winford Holloway and published by Sheffield Phoenix Press Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Orientalism' refers both to the academic study of the Orient and to Western scholarship that clings to stock images of the timeless East and oriental despotism. This landmark collection of essays, the first in its field, is written by seasoned art historians, Assyriologists and biblical specialists; it is organized under four rubrics: 1. Intellectual and Disciplinary Histories identifies waymarks in the rise of Assyriology in America, shifting images of ancient Assyria in their cultural context, Smithsonian Institution exhibits of 'biblical antiquities' at the world's fairs of 1893 and 1895, the rise of Egyptology in the nineteenth century, Mari scholarship and its impact on biblical studies, and the ancient Near Eastern text anthology as genre (Foster, Frahm, Holloway Reid, Younger). 2. Visual Perspectives suggests itself as a corrective to the academic habit of conjuring a 'texted Orient'. Here are contributions that describe Assyrianizing engravings in the famous Dalziels' Bible Gallery, the reception of ancient Assyria in nineteenth-century England versus France, and artwork for twentieth-century American histories of Israel (Bohrer, Esposito, Long). 3. Of Harems and Heroines explores gender issues in the context of the figure of Semiramis and the idea of the harem in biblical research and Assyriology (Asher-Greve, Solvang). 4. Assyriology and the Bible offers essays that focus on specific figures (Josiah), texts (Genesis 28.10-22, the Uruk Prophecy), or periods (Persian period in biblical historiography) (Grabbe, Handy, Hurowitz, Scurlock). The volume includes a Bibliography of some 1000 items, an important resource.

Book Computer aided Analysis of Amorite

Download or read book Computer aided Analysis of Amorite written by Ignace Jay Gelb and published by Oriental Institute Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Computer aided' is somewhat daunting in books dating from 1980 but the underlying purpose of this book, to provide linguistically ordered lists of 6,662 proper names excerpted from Sumerian and Akkadian texts, remains useful since most of our knowledge of the non-Akkadian Semitic dialect comes from these names.
