The aims of this book are to provide systematic accounts of semantic extensions of sensory adjectives from a cognitive perspective, and to document the validity of an empirical approach, using panchronic and corpus-based methods. This cognitive and usage-based empirical study uncovers cognitive mechanisms underlying linguistic phenomena, since expressions related to perception originally describe the most fundamental human experiences that are frequently utilized for conceptualizing abstract entities, and adjectives especially reflect human construals of situations. This study reveals that each word's meanings extend in a manner peculiarly restricted by its original cognitive characteristics, firmly rooted in everyday bodily experiences, and that this crucially influences its syntactic structures as well. At the same time, it is a ground-breaking demonstration of the power of computerized corpus research.

Book excerpt: Drawing on ideas from cognitive linguistics, connectionism, and perception, The Human Semantic Potential describes a connectionist model that learns perceptually grounded semantics for natural language in spatial terms. Languages differ in the ways in which they structure space, and Regier's aim is to have the model perform its learning task for terms from any natural language. The system has so far succeeded in learning spatial terms from English, German, Russian, Japanese, and Mixtec. The model views simple movies of two-dimensional objects moving relative to one another and learns to classify them linguistically in accordance with the spatial system of some natural language. The overall goal is to determine which sorts of spatial configurations and events are learnable as the semantics for spatial terms and which are not. Ultimately, the model and its theoretical underpinnings are a step in the direction of articulating biologically based constraints on the nature of human semantic systems. Along the way Regier takes up such substantial issues as the attraction and the liabilities of PDP and structured connectionist modeling, the problem of learning without direct negative evidence, and the area of linguistic universals, which is addressed in the model itself. Trained on spatial terms from different languages, the model permits observations about the possible bases of linguistic universals and interlanguage variation.

Second, a systematic frame semantic analysis of the descriptors sheds light on how meaning is constructed with regard to the lexemes’ wider context, from the utterance to the text type. Third, a comparison with German descriptors tests the applicability of a frame from one language to another (English – German). Framing presents itself as a means to capture the knowledge representation that underlies a particular discourse. With its detailed linguistic analyses and its interdisciplinary treatment of framing across discourse (specialized vs. public discourse), this book is interesting for researchers working within cognitive linguistics, terminology, and sensory science.

The KB and sensor observations can be encoded in bit-matrix and bit-vector representations, respectively, for efficient storage and computation. A perception component can perform semantic perception on observed properties based on the KB. The perception component can determine explanatory features associated with the observed properties through abductive reasoning, and determine discriminatory properties associated with the explanatory features through deductive reasoning. These can be executed in an iterative and interleaved Perception Cycle for efficient computation of minimum actionable explanations of observations. The bit-matrix and bit-vector representations are presented for efficient computation of minimum actionable explanation using perception cycle, the iterative and interleaved application of hybrid abductive and deductive reasoning to seek contextually relevant discriminatory observations to systematically narrow explanatory features.
