Book Place of Partial Cutting in Old Growth Stands of the Douglas Fir Region Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Place of Partial Cutting in Old-Growth Stands of the Douglas-Fir Region Original proponents of the system called it selective timber management in the Douglas -fir region It embodied successive light cuts taking out the better trees mostly over 40 inches d.b.b. It also assumed that smaller trees would continue to move up into the larger diameter classes, and that gradually an all-aged forestwould develop. The system, as originally described, made occasional reference to clear cutting in small groups or spots if satisfactory restocking did not occur after several light tree-selection cuts. But the first stages of the cutting system did not turn out as anticipated, and time had not permitted the later phases of the system to get beyond the theory stage before logging methods changed. Book excerpt: Scott Prudham investigates a region that has in recent years seen more environmental conflict than perhaps anywhere else in the country--the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Prudham employs a political economic approach to explain the social and economic conflicts arising from the timber industry's presence in the region. As well, he provides a thorough accounting of the timber industry itself, tracing its motivations, practices, and labor relations.

Book Continuous Cover Forestry

Download or read book Continuous Cover Forestry written by Timo Pukkala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.
