Book Selecting compensation as an element to illustrate the difficulties multinational companies face in utilising expatriates

Download or read book Selecting compensation as an element to illustrate the difficulties multinational companies face in utilising expatriates written by Manfred Daberto and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 2, University of Manchester, language: English, abstract: The workplace has changed the last years. The employees enjoy more career opportunities. Their acceptance of an international assignment depends on a large degree on the organisation’s compensation policy. The expatriate compensation policy should follow the same principles as the domestic compensation in order to attract, retain and motivate employees to fulfil the expectations of the company within a determined budget (Jagatsing, 2000). The expatriate defined means “an employee of one company who is sent for a limited period of time from his or her place (country) of domestic employment to a place of assignment, for the purpose of working for and providing services to a receiving company.” (ASN, Services for Expatriates, March 2004). Compensation is “the total remuneration, in cash or in kind, payable by an enterprise to an employee in return for work done by the latter during the accounting period.”(United Nations Statistic Division, March 2004). The difficulties of the compensation of an expatriate lie in different economic systems, development models, political and institutional contexts, different pension systems, taxation issues and different cultures and traditions. Expatriate compensation is very complex and a challenging issue. Black (1991 in Suutari and Tornikoski, 2001) argued that 77 per cent of the expatriate managers were dissatisfied with their salaries and their compensation package. Considering these difficulties and differences in the international context the Human Resource Manager has to ensure that the compensation is fair and that it is also cost-effective in today’s global market place.

Download or read book Expatriates and Managing Global Mobility written by Soo Min Toh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multinational enterprises continue to rely heavily upon expatriates as part of their global workforce. These expatriates, whose exact employment contract may take different forms, are assigned to help them develop global skills as well as to foster knowledge transfer. But managing this expatriate workforce is extremely complex, requiring a questioning of assumptions and sensitivity to new social and cultural dynamics. This book sets out to examine the problem of expatriate management through an I/O Psychology lens. Each chapter draws upon the expertise of scholars from around the world to provide insights into the latest research findings and remaining needs, pertaining to a wide variety of issues. The contributors of this book review the current state of the research of the issue at hand and then make recommendations for where the new frontiers of the research should be in the coming decades. This volume covers four sets of issues pertaining to expatriate management and global mobility in depth. First, the different decision points organizations must make about assigning someone to an overseas location for some period of time; second the different categories of employees in the multinational corporation and their unique characteristics and challenges; third, the various issues and implications of managing a globally mobile workforce; and fourth, the unique contexts of global mobility. Overarching future research themes are identified that lay out the research agenda for the coming decades. By bringing together key research, this book aims to help I/O psychologists understand, explore, and identify new ways of contributing to the understanding of the issues involved in managing an expatriate workforce. Incorporating state-of-the art I/O psychology research in this unique context bears the promise of yielding important new paradigms and practices.

  • Pages : 103 pages

Download or read book Going Local written by Yvonne Bosson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies have long accepted the high cost of expatriate assignments as the price of doing business in the global arena. Now, companies are increasingly considering expatriate localization in response to increased pressures to trim costs within global mobility programs. Expatriate assignments cost an average of $1 million over a three-year period, so converting an expatriate to a local package can save a company hundreds of thousands of dollars, if done correctly. Localization involves changing the expatriates total compensation (including base salary, incentive compensation, risk benefits, perks, social security, and retirement plans) into one that is identical to that available to locally hired employees. This is done with the understanding that the employee does not intend to return to their home country. The benefits of localization for cost containment, peer equity, and business imperatives are evident. However, developing and implementing an effective localization policy is a challenge that most employers find too daunting to undertake alone. From handling changes in retirement benefits to salary differentials, local labor law and tax compliance, the complexities of this conversion are enormous. Now, corporate employee mobility expert Yvonne Bosson has developed a comprehensive handbook to address the issue in a way that is clear and easy to understand. This invaluable resource guides human resources professionals and relocation administrators through the multifaceted process of examining their current localization policy and identifying areas for improvement. This book is also ideal for companies just beginning to transfer employees globally. It provides an in-depth examination of the structure and components of a successful relocation and localization program along with pertinent advice on communicating policies.

Book Differentiation Between Inpatriation and Expatriation

Download or read book Differentiation Between Inpatriation and Expatriation written by Marleen Stein and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,5, European School of Business Reutlingen, language: English, abstract: Introduction In the globalized world the competition gets aggravated and multinational companies (MNCs) seek out for new practices to stay competitive. One solution is cognitive and cultural diversity, implemented by multicultural management teams. Nevertheless a prerequisite is that international human resource management (IHRM) and the strategic goals of the organization will be linked (Harvey, Speier, Novicevic 1999b). This is necessary for the development of a distinctive competency, which constitutes a competitive advantage through diversity. Diversity prevents groupthink and facilitates a repertoire of different strategic choices, which is crucial to stay competitive. To approach this goal, MNCs avail themselves of international assignments, meaning to require an employee (manager) to work abroad for a specific purpose. The different purposes of international assignments will be examined in chapter 2.3. There are two typical forms of international assignments: expatriation and inpatriation. This paper examines the inpatriation process, concerning: - the different assignee types - the differentiation between inpatriation and expatriation - the purpose of international assignments, especially inpatriation - the advantages of inpatriation compared to expatriation and vice versa - motives, expectations and challenges of inpatriation from different points of view - preparation by the inpatriate - cultural challenges (culture shock) and coping tips - preparation, assistance/support and training for the inpatriate and factors which have to be considered This paper will conclude what factors make the inpatriation successful, and what can lead to failure. This book was released on 2004-01-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2003 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Cooperative Education Mannheim (University of Cooperative Education), language: English, abstract: The increasing globalisation of the markets in our modern world creates more and more challenges for international companies. Through Joint Ventures, Strategic Alliances or overseas subsidiaries they penetrate and begin to compete in foreign markets. As a result of the associated challenges, companies have understood that technical knowledge alone cannot count as appropriate prerequisites for global work-placement. Intercultural skills and international management qualities are increasingly sought after for management positions. As successful expatriations are good indicators of the availability and presence of these skills, they obtain all the more on importance. Failed overseas assignments are a financial and operational risk for companies and therefore, most companies have understood the importance of preparing their expatriates and their families for the different cultures, the different living conditions as well as the different leading aspects in the new country. This paper states the crucial components in preparing employees for overseas assignments and their importance for international businesses. It explains why companies send managers abroad, what kind of skills those expatriates have to establish in order to be successful and how culture influences the private as well as the working environment.
