Book Songs From an Ulster Valley Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs From an Ulster Valley Classic Reprint written by Herbert Moore Pim and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs From an Ulster Valley As I write I have before me a folio volume of typed poems bearing my name, which has never been published, and which I sincerely hope may never be published. Indeed, it is my intention to present it as a burnt offering to the High Muses on some suitable occasion. I have also within reach of my hand sufficient verse to prove me a poet, if sheer bulk were the test of merit. But I have gone through this mass of verse, written in early youth, and have rejected all, save three pieces, Memento Mori, Child Rowland, and To a Mother. From the poems written in later years, I have selected those which seem to be worthy of selection. This explanation will serve to show on what principle the present edition of collected poems has been formed. Though I had been writing verse for twenty-five years, I offered none of my poems to the public until 1917, when a rather exquisite edition was produced at his own risk by a Dublin publisher. To his surprise and my own the entire edition of five hundred copies was sold out within two months. But as the sale of this first poetical venture was confined to Ireland, I have hopes that the present collected edition may be as kindly received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Love to Light: A Selection of Songs of Good Courage HE subtitle of our book, Songs of Good Cour age, must not be too rigidly interpreted. It represents, we trust, its dominant tone, but the cour age we have sought to illustrate is of many kinds: the courage of belief is here, and also the courage of doubt; the courage of rejoicing faith, and the courage to live grandly and do well however that may be denied. We have sought, too, the things that make for courage, and those, as well, that make for comfort and for peace. There are others which respect the rights of sorrow and give voice to aching hearts. We have trenched as little as possible on other anthologies with which we are acquainted, and upon the familiar clas sics, but occasionally have pounced upon our own wherever we have found it, being unable to deny our selves some things which we have loved together many years. When poems have been taken entire we have followed the authors' titles, but many of our pieces are fragments, and for these we have invented titles which. There are wildflowers everywhere Shedding fragrance on the air, The butterflies are hurrying to and fro; The squirrels and the bees Are as busy as you please. Out there among the hills where I would go. F or it's there that one can rest. Lying close to Nature's breast. And the breeze's lullaby is low and sweet, 50 I turn my longing eyes Where the stately mountains rise. And the wooded hills are nestling at their feet. • Pages : 304 pages

Book excerpt: 'I have come to the borders of sleep, The unfathomable deep Forest where all must lose Their way, however straight, Or winding, soon or late; They cannot choose.' Fired by his abiding love of the English landscape, the poetry of Edward Thomas is some of the most astonishing of the twentieth century. A journalist, essayist and critic for many years, he was encouraged to write verse by his friend Robert Frost. He produced a late outburst of poetry of extraordinary beauty and mystery about the subjects closest to his heart: rural England and its inhabitants, landscape, atmosphere, transience, endurance and death. By 1917, when he was killed on the Western Front, he had earned his place as one of England's most valued poets. This selection brings together his finest verse with his most vivid prose writings on the countryside.
