Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the French composer Jean Langlais to be published in English and also the first to provide complete information on all of his published works plus 86 unplubished compositions, and eleven orchestral works. This book traces Langlais' development from his early years of study at the National Institute for the Young Blind, through his long and active career as composer, church musician, and concert organist, and explores the impact that Langlais' hard work, determination, and talent have had on the musical world. It is divided into five major sections, including a biography, interviews, works and performances, a discography, and a bibliography. Listing 240 compositions written between 1927 and 1987, and containing a complete discography of both commercially produced and privately released recordings, the major portion of this volume is an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Langlais, with 536 entries, covering the years from 1926 to 1987, when he celebrated his eightieth birthday. Categories include general references, individual compositions, improvisations, reviews of recordings, nonprint sources, and archive information. There is valuable information on premieres, reactions to Langlais' works and performances, recital programs, and correspondence. The opus numbers, recently completed by Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais, the composer's wife, are published here for the first time in a chronological list of compositions, and the index section covers works, authors and translators, and general information.

Book Jean Langlais

Download or read book Jean Langlais written by Ann Labounsky and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2000 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All these aspects of his life and art, including the rigorous training and arduous practice that transformed a blind peasant boy into a superb musician, his lifelong friendship with Olivier Messiaen, his sometimes turbulent family life, and the body of works he left - only J. S. Bach wrote more compositions for the organ - are narrated and analyzed by Ann Labounsky, who is uniquely qualified to write this definitive biography. A favorite Langlais pupil, she was asked by Langlais himself to write it and had his full cooperation for numerous long interviews over many years."--BOOK JACKET.

Book J S Bach s Great Eighteen Organ Chorales

Download or read book J S Bach s Great Eighteen Organ Chorales written by Russell Stinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, this volume offers an in-depth look at the "Great Eighteen" organ chorales, among the most celebrated works for organ, and a milestone in the history of the chorale. Addressed to organists, scholars, and general listeners alike, this lucid and engaging book examines the music from a wide spectrum of historical and analytical perspectives. Stinson examines the models used by Bach in conceiving the original pieces, his subsequent compilation of these works into a collection, and his compositional process as preserved by the autograph manuscript. Himself an accomplished organist, Stinson also considers various issues of performance practice and concludes with a discussion of the music's reception--its dissemination in manuscript and printed form, its performance history, and its influence on later composers. Completely up-to-date and presenting a wealth of new material, much of it translated into English for the first time, this study will open up fresh perspectives on some of the composer's greatest creations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organ Works of Bach This is, I think, the first systematic and comprehensive English book on the organ works of Bach. It comes from one who is both organist and musician. I hasten to explain. By "both" organist and musician" I do not mean what some rude scribes mean when they say of a singer, by way of the highest praise they can give him, that he is not only a singer but a musician. I would never dream of suggesting that there are organists who are not musicians. But it goes without saying that there are musicians who are not organists. I know the tribe exists, because I am a humble member of it myself. My own practical acquaintance with the organ has been limited to the rare occasions when I have sat by an organist friend who has allowed me to let my fingers wander idly over the noisy keys, as somebody's did in the song, and with the same futility. But though I cannot play the organ, I have studied a good deal of organ music: my own knowledge of Bach's organ works, indeed, is derived in the first place from study of them either at the pianoforte or with the score on my knees. There must be many others who have learned them in the same way. But what we learn of them in this way is obviously not all that is to be learned about them. They were written for a particular instrument, and cannot fully come to life except on that instrument. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Playing the Organ Works of C sar Franck

Download or read book Playing the Organ Works of C sar Franck written by Rollin Smith and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion to the author's Toward and Authentic Interpretation of the Organ Works of César Franck, this title applies the sources discussed in that volume in its practical approach to performance. Each of Franck's twelve major organ works is discussed in detail: the manuscript, the work's history and association with Franck and his circle, published editions, corrections to the 1959 Durand edition, and recorded performances. Technical problems are discussed and solutions provided. A glossary of terms found in Franck's organ works is provided with English translation; Franck's often confusing registration indications are translated and explained; performance of each work is discussed in light of the information provided by Franck's own pupils, their students and contemporaries. A bibliography of Franck literature published from 1983 to 1996 is also included.
