Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Essays of Joseph Addison: With an Introduction IN this oft - quoted line, Mr. Pope, with his own admirable terseness, has summed up the character of his great contemporary Joseph Addison. For Mr. Addison seems to have had by nature that most excel lent gift, au even and' cheerful temper. One thinks of him as wearing a certain calm dignity and decorum always. Courteous, urbane, with no angularities of character, throughout a long and busy life he seldom gave'offence to any one and when he did give Offence he offered his enemy no point of attack. And he had a good luck to match his good temper. Pensions and places he seemed to get without seeking, and to keep when everybody else' lost them I believe Mr. Addi son might be king if he chose, said Swift once, with a twinge of envy. The truth is, however, that Addison's good luck, like most good luck, was no mere accident, but the result of uniform good sense and good humor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays of Joseph Addison, Vol. 2 of 2 Sooner than violate his neutrality to the two bundles of hay, I shall not presume to determine; but only take notice of the conduct of our own species in the same perplexity. When a man has a mind to venture his money in a lottery, every figure of it appears equally alluring, and as likely to succeed as any of its fellows. They all of them have the same pretensions to good luck, stand upon the same foot of competition, and no manner of reason can be given why a man should prefer one to the other before the lottery is drawn. In this case therefore caprice very often acts in the place of reason, and forms to itself some groundless imaginary motive, where real and sub stantial ones are wanting. I know a well-meaning man that is very well pleased to risk his good fortune upon the number 1711, because it is the year of our Lord. I am acquainted with a tacker that would give a good deal for the number On the contrary I have been told of a certain zealous Dissenter, who, being a great enemy to Popery, and believing that bad men are the most fortunate in this world, will lay two to one on the number 666 against any other number, because, says he, it is the number Of the Beast. Several would prefer the number before any other, as it is the number of the pounds in the great prize. In short, some are pleased to find their own age in their number; some that they have got a number which makes a pretty appearance in the ciphers and others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Essays of Addison: Together With Macaulay's Essay on Addison's Life and Writings Having found the presence of a mass of explanatory notes an Obstacle to my endeavor to interest my pupils in their English reading, I have essayed to suggest a better method of procedure by preparing texts in such a manner as rather to call for research than to make research needless by giving its results. A note that tells at once what is wanted forestalls the teacher. I would co-operate with the teacher by aiding him to set the pupils at work. Accordingly I have Offered no notes whatever on passages easily explained by reference to dictionaries and encyclopedias, except perchance to give a warning that such research Should not be omitted. Only when I have found the way of research a little dark or crooked have I hinted at the path to be pursued. The notes in this volume, therefore, are distinctly meant to send the learner away from the little books in his little desk to the larger and more abundant books of the school library, and to the public and other libraries to which he may have access. I have myself found it a joy to conquer these small difficulties: this joy I would share with my pupils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays From Addison: Selected and Edited, With Introductions, Notes, Glossary, Etc XVIII. -xix. Compare a charming paper by Goldsmith on The Man in Black (citizen of the World, no. XX. One of the series of essays in which Addison called the attention Of his age to the greatness of Paradise Lost. Literary criticism, it must be remembered, was mainly (in spite of noble exceptions, such as Dryden's Prefaces) of the most pedantic sort: works of art were judged by their conformity to rules framed in accordance with a narrow and unintelligent study of the ancient critics. Addison's judgments, though some may now seem Obvious and others wrong, were in advance of his time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Essays of Joseph Addison Vol 1 of 2 written by James George Frazer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays of Joseph Addison, Vol. 1 of 2: Chosen and Edited With a Preface and a Few Notes Having undertaken to edit these essays, in which Sir Roger de Coverley plays a leading part, I naturally formed a wish to visit the old knight's pleasant seat in Worcester shire, where the Spectator passed the month of July with him in rural retirement more than two hundred years ago. I was the more desirous of doing so, because my researches into the history of the Spectator Club had led me to believe, that on the dissolution of the club many of the papers relating to it had been sent for safe-keeping to Captain Sentry, Sir Roger's heir, and that some of them at least were still preserved in the muniment room at Coverley Hall. Accordingly I wrote to inquire of the present owner of the Hall, and received from him a very courteous letter in reply. He informed me that he had in his possession a considerable number of papers con cerning the club, that he had never himself examined them with attention, but that I should be free to do so and to publish anything of interest I might find in them, if I would pay him a visit and examine the documents on the spot, as be valued them too highly to trust them to the hazards of the post. He only stipulated, that I should not make his name public, nor drop any hint as to the part of Worcestershire in which Coverley is situated for he leads, as he told me, a very retired life on his ancestral estate. Book Selections From the Works of Joseph Addison

Download or read book Selections From the Works of Joseph Addison written by Edward Bliss Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Works of Joseph Addison: Edited With an Introduction and Notes This book has been prepared for the use of those second year men at Yale College who are pursuing a course in the history of English literature. While the selections show Addison's work as a whole, his verse as well as his prose, they are not designed for the special student of Eighteenth century writings. The text is that of Tickell's 1721 edition. This has been chosen because it represents Addison's final revision of his work. This text has been carefully collated with the first editions of the poems, and with the original sheets of the Tatler and the Spectator. The variants are printed at the bottom of each page. In many cases they are unimportant, but often they throw light both on Addison's method of composition and his thought, and therefore they should be of value to the teacher. The original sheets of the Freeholder are rare. They are not to be found in the British Museum nor in the Bodleian; the Yale library has the first twenty issues only. The Freeholder papers have therefore been collated with the first collected edition, 1716. Throughout these selections the spelling has been modernized and the original capitals and italics have not been reproduced. Book Joseph Addison Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joseph Addison When Addison was twenty-seven years old he was still undecided as to his choice of a profession. His father very much desired that he should take orders in the Church of England. He seems himself at one time to have regarded a clerical life, not as his duty, but as his destiny marked out by circumstances. -his Opinions were orthodox; his life, if not spiritual, was moral; his college had rich. Livings in its gift; his father had influence in the Church; why, then, should he hesitate Among churchmen little was thought in those times of the need of a divine call to the ministry. Hence he had no scruples on that point. With him the question was, not' what God called him to do, but in which profession, literature or the ministry, could he hope to succeed best? Probably his natural shyness disinclined him to at tempt the latter, while the success which followed his first. Poetical publications inclined him to the former. Thus he stood in life's great highway, an undecided man, waiting, not for Providence, but for human events, to direct his course. Download or read book The Works of Joseph Addison Vol 2 of 5 written by Joseph Addison and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Joseph Addison, Vol. 2 of 5: Including the Whole Contents of Bp, Hurd's Edition, With Letters and Other Pieces Not Found in Any Previous Collection; And Macaulay's Essay on His Life and Works Shortly before Addison died he arranged that his friend Thomas Tickell should publish his works, and in 1721 a collected edition appeared in four quarto volumes, with a letter of dedication from Addison to Craggs. This letter shows that Tickell's edition may be regarded as the final authority for everything contained in it, but a few works usually attributed to Addison were omitted, presumably in accordance with Addison's instructions. The plan of the present edition has been to reprint in the first two volumes Tickell's text of everything which he includes (except the Essays), and to collate all the earlier editions of each work so far as they could be found. Other works which appear to be genuine have been reprinted from the original editions, and collated with the important reissues. Works which appear to be spurious or very doubtful are printed in an appendix to the third volume. To each work there has been prefixed a note in two parts: the first states which text has been reprinted and which editions have been collated, the second deals very briefly with its bibliography. A detailed introduction and commentary and a general bibliography will be found in the third volume, which also contains Addison's Correspondence. A few misprints in Tickell's text have been corrected. The changes are marked by square brackets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One finds something more particular in the face of the country, and more as tonishing in the works of nature, than can be met with in any other part of Europe. It is the great school of music and painting, and contains in it all the noblest productions of statuary and architecture, both ancient and modern. It abounds with cabinets of curiosities, and vast collections of all kinds of antiquities. N 0 other country in the world has such a variety of governments, that are so difi'erent in their constitutions, and so refined in their politics.
