Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of Success in Poultry Culture All along the shores of poultrydom are strewn the wrecks of poultrymen who have gone into the business without proper knowledge of it or adequate experience to justify them in expecting success. Every year finds a new army of recruits going, headlong, into the business, without knowledge or experience, with the expectation of making a fortune, a competency, or at least an easy living, all, or nearly all, to be wrecked along those inhospitable shores. Why so many people think they can succeed in the poultry business, without experience or knowledge of it, is a mystery. The same people would not think of entering any other business without first gaining a thorough knowledge of it, and as thorough a knowledge is as necessary in the poultry business as in any other business you can enter. Book Poultry Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poultry Culture Classic Reprint written by Massachusetts State Board Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Culture In no section of the country is soil better adapted to poultry. Most parts of the State have a light, sandy or gravelly loam. There is no danger, therefore, of its becoming contaminated with droppings, as it is leached out by the heavy rains. On such farms in New England poultry have been kept on the same land for forty years with no serious results. Of course, I refer now especially to poultry farms, not general farms where only a few fowls are kept, and to the extensive rather than the intensive system. Again, much of the soil here is adapted to the growth of corn, mangels, beets and all kinds of green crops for poultry. Its sandy condition gives a quick growth which means tender, palatable green food throughout the growing season. The fact that our soil and climate are well adapted to all kinds of fruit is an advantage that cannot be overlooked. Fruit trees not only yield a crop, but furnish shade in summer and windbreaks in winter. Much Of the soil is well suited to the production of corn, and immense crops can be produced by raising corn and poultry on the same ground in alternate years. Very little fertilizer other than that produced by the poultry need be used, other things being equal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Science and Art of Poultry Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Science and Art of Poultry Culture Classic Reprint written by Earl Bedford Hawks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Art of Poultry Culture In placing this volume before the public, the author fully realizes the responsibility that rests upon one who assumes so grave an undertaking. The poultry industry has reached such proportions, the amount of capital invested is growing so rapidly and the ultimate success of the individual is so necessary, that a treatise on the poultry industry should be compiled in the most careful and painstaking manner. Since childhood, poultry has had its allurements for the author, who spent his early years upon a farm. The training given by the high school, the college, the university, and the subsequent practice of the law, has enabled the author to enjoy keenly the fancier's labors and assisted him to fully realize that in the field of poultry culture it is brains, not brawn, that win success. Whatever of merit is to be found in this treatise is largely due to the years of assistance given by various Government experiment stations throughout the United States and Canada, to the efficiency of the poultry journals, to the special treatises of value, to the splendid exhibitions, and to the practical experience of the author as a fancier, each of which has had a share in the general education leading to this volume. This education is opening to the author the possibilities that lie ahead for the student in poultrydom, and the vast extent and importance of this field in the commercial world. To Wm. E. Becker, is due the credit for valuable aid and the excellent chapter upon the "Vices, Enemies, Parasites and Diseases of Poultry and their Proper Treatment," and who in turn wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Salmon and other prominent authorities. The author will feel that this volume will not have been in vain if it shall prove helpful and instructive to poultry lovers, whether they are beginners or veterans in the business or whether they are in college, on a city lot, or on the farm. Book Profits in Poultry Keeping Solved

Download or read book Profits in Poultry Keeping Solved written by Edgar Briggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profits in Poultry Keeping Solved: The Briggs' System and Secrets of Successful Poultry Raising; An Economical, Labor Saving, Profit Assuring System of Poultry Raising In the way of introduction to those who have never heard of me or of my new methods, it is perhaps advisable that I Should say something about myself. I was born a poul tryman; my father before me bred fancy stock all his life and from a small boy I gathered eggs, took charge of the poultry, exhibited them at the country fairs and had birds of my own. I have bred fancy stock all my life and tried the winter broiler business with fatal results, as hundreds of others have done. This led me to experimenting and also studying nature's methods to see if there was not some way in which they could be raised on a large scale without such great loss. The result is, after fifteen years of careful experimenting, I have solved the problem and am now able to put any poultry plant on a paying basis, regardless of location or other obstacles. Plants that went out of business on account of using the ordinary methods have started up under my new methods and have had wonderful success. The first edition of my book which was put on the market seven years ago has all been sold, as well as the second edition of copies in 1907; and the third edition of copies in 1908, and the fourth edition of copies in 1910, and now the fifth edition of copies becomes necessary. My great feed, for such it is, at 15 cents or less per bushel, will make any plant pay. After experimenting with processed oats, my main feed for 15 years, I consider I now have as near a perfect feeding system as can be obtained for either a yarded' or free-range plant. Follow my methods and my instructions as laid down in this book, and success is certain. Read every line carefully. You cannot go wrong. A fortune awaits everyone who builds one of my free - range plants, as they are bound to pay a handsome profit under my system of care and feeding. Book Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture Classic Reprint written by John H. Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Poultry Culture Need of instruction. The practice of poultry culture is an art or a craft or a combination of art and craft according to the purpose for which it is pursued and the taste and skill of those engaged in it. A workman may attain great proficiency in many operations merely through skill in imitation. Such a workman, however, must work always after a model or under the direction of one familiar with all phases of his art or craft and thoroughly under standing its principles. In any enterprise engaging large numbers of people, only a small proportion of these need be qualified to oversee and direct the work; but as the number of persons engaged diminishes, the proportion understanding the processes involved and their relations must increase, until, in such occupa tions as farming and housekeeping, each husbandman and house wife must be able to do and to direct the doing of a variety of operations, adapting and adjusting all to the general result sought. The relation of this fact to agricultural and technical education has not been sufficiently emphasized. Considering it here only in its application to poultry culture, it is plain that a general knowl edge of the subject is as necessary and as useful to one whose plans contemplate perhaps the maintenance of a flock of a few hundred fowls on the farm as to one who intends to undertake operations on a large scale. Both require the same preparation, as far as preparation can be given by book and class instruction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The ABC of Poultry Culture: A Thoroughly Practical and Original Book by a Practical Breeder; Especially Designed for Beginners Another requisite, and a very important one, too, is a deter mination to succeed, and a will to hold on through all discourage ments. Some call it grit, others backbohe, others nerve. But, even with the stoutest will, and most resolute determination, a man will fail if he is unfitted for the work. And when he dis covers himself in this predicament, the best thing to do is to give it up. And, when he gives it up he should acknowledge that he has not the necessary capabilities that breeding fowls is not his forte and not declare, as is usually the case, that the poultry business is a fraud and a humbug, and that there is no profit in it. If a person really loves fowls, and thinks the care of them a pleas ure instead of a burden, then success may be attainable if a profit is the end and aim. The one who keeps a few fowls for pleasure is not to be taken into consideration in considering the requisites of a successful breeder. The man who keeps fowls for pleasure only, may not know much about them, but if he persists in keeping them he will either develop into a genuine fancier. Or keep them just long enough to' become thoroughly disgusted with them, and clear them off his place. This action will result from a neglect of details, however small, and be proof of incompetence to master the common sense methods required in a poultry yard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Secrets Revealed: The Most Complete Book on Poultry Raising Ever Written Poultry raising is the biggest business on earth. Government statistics - incomplete as they are - prove that the poultry industry of the world surpasses every manufacturing business. Cotton is no longer king. Beef, pork and mutton are left far in the rear. Wheat was passed long ago; and even King Corn will be found in second place when the poultry industry is properly tabulated. And this great industry is a profitable business, giving better returns for the money invested than any other line of legitimate trade. It has been proven over and again that the cost of producing' poultry meat is no greater, pound for pound, than that of producing beef, pork or mutton. At the same time the market reports, month by month, show that the selling prices are overwhelmingly in favor of the poultryman. The live weight prices for the best grades of poultry run on the average from two to three times as much as the highest prices paid for the best grades of cattle, hogs or sheep; while in the lower grades the difference is still greater. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Poultry Culture The object of this volume is to furnish reliable and practical information on the profitable care and management of poultry. I have endeavored to take the reader, presumably a beginner, into the field of practical poultry work, telling him what to do, and how and when to do it. I have catered especially to those who desire to keep only a small flock of fowls for pleasure or profit, but most of the matter contained herein will also apply to poultry keeping on a more extensive scale. In order to make this treatise as brief and yet as comprehensive as possible, everything of a theoretical or imaginative nature has been omitted, as well as all unnecessary things. I have made use of only valuable and practical facts, which are the result of my personal experience in the handling of fowls on both a large and a small scale. Book Chicken Nurses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chicken Nurses Classic Reprint written by Charles D. Cleveland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicken Nurses Mr. Cleveland's articles, 'chicken Nurses, ' have given me more pleasure in reading than has any other article or book on poultry production that l have ever read. He has refreshed my memory and has brought back to me scenes and experiences that I had in my boyhood days when I first began breeding standard bred poultry. The ups and downs are the same the world over, but the man who will stick to it will prove a poultry success, as Mr. Cleveland well states. These articles, published in book form, would prove of um told value to old and new breeders alike. Mr. Cleveland's many years of experience as a leading poultry breeder and, judge and his several years as secretary and manager of the great Madison Square Garden, N, Y., Show place him as a foremost authority of this day whose advice can be followed with safety for progressive and successful poultry production. As we see it, the greater value of this book to the breed ers does not lie wholly in Mr. Cleveland's advice or in his telling how to incubate, brood, feed, mate, exhibit, etc., but in the greater worth of liberal, broad-minded lessons noted in every chapter and on every page. There are no inflatedideas, but only whole-hearted sentiments, plainly expressed and splendidly written that will surely benefit all who will read, study and follow them. We surely appreciate Mr. Cleveland and commend him for his excellent examples in aid to others, his efforts for improved breeding, and his worth in general to the standard-bred poultry industry.
