Book excerpt: How much of the world do we miss when we focus on the destination rather than the journey? As Diana Mohrsen sets out on an eight-day solo road-trip through parts of British Columbia and Alberta, she makes a conscious effort to be in the moment—to let her surroundings guide her to feelings of peace and gratitude. In her first travelogue, Mohrsen brings the reader along on the four thousand kilometer journey through her photographs, by noting the animals and scenery she sees, and by reflecting on the beauty and spirituality of the world around her. As she slows her life down, and appreciates each moment, she is open to the unexpected. It is this encounter with the unexpected that can take a traveller to a secret destination.

Book Hidden Cities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Moses Gates
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2013-03-21
  • ISBN : 1101602767
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Hidden Cities written by Moses Gates and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating glimpse into the world of urban exploration, Moses Gates describes his trespasses in some of the most illustrious cities in the world from Paris to Cairo to Moscow. Also, exclusive to this e-book, are firsthand accounts from the author's fellow travelers and family. Gates is a new breed of adventurer for the 21st century. He thrives on the thrill of seeing what others do not see, let alone even know exists. It all began quite innocuously. After moving to New York City and pursuing graduate studies in Urban Planning, he began unearthing hidden facets of the city—abandoned structures, disused subway stops, incredible rooftop views that belonged to cordoned-off buildings. At first it was about satiating a nagging curiosity; yet the more he experienced and saw, the more his thirst for adventure grew, eventually leading him abroad. In this memoir of his experiences, Gates details his travels through underground canals, sewers, subways, and crypts, in metropolises spanning four continents. In this finely-written book, Gates describes his immersion in the worldwide subculture of urban exploration; how he joined a world of people who create secret art galleries in subway tunnels, break into national monuments for fun, and travel the globe sleeping in centuries-old catacombs and abandoned Soviet relics rather than hotels or bed-and-breakfasts. They push each other further and further—visiting the hidden side of a dozen countries, discovering ancient underground Roman ruins, scaling the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges, partying in tunnels, sneaking into Stonehenge, and even finding themselves under arrest on top of Notre Dame Cathedral. Ultimately, Gates contemplates why he and other urban explorers are so instinctively drawn to these unknown and sometimes forbidden places—even (and for some, especially) when the stakes are high. Hidden Cities will inspire readers to think about the potential for urban exploration available for anyone, anywhere—if they have only the curiosity (and nerve!) to dig below the surface to discover the hidden corners of this world.

Book The Secret

Download or read book The Secret written by Byron Preiss and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

Book Flyfisher s Guide to Colorado s Lost Lakes and Secret Places

Download or read book Flyfisher s Guide to Colorado s Lost Lakes and Secret Places written by Kephart, Mike and published by Wilderness Adventures Press. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorado's high elevation offers spectacular, often tremendous fishing that is more often relayed via rumor than reliable report. But in the Flyfisher's Guide to Colorado's Lost Lakes and Secret Places, veteran angler Mike Kephart gives you the scoop on which Colorado mountain and wilderness lakes and creeks fish well, how to get there, the difficulty of access, and what you can expect to catch. These largely untapped fisheries can be off the table to anglers who can't invest the time and effort required to access them only to find poor fishing. Kephart has done the leg-work – and the cast-work – to determine which lakes hold the big ones, the high populations, the hatches, and the rare species like greenback cutthroat and golden trout. The fish in these hard-to-access places can be eager to eat, so getting to the right ones is worth the effort. Beyond the lakes, Kephart covers some remote canyons and gorges, and side canyons within gorges where he's found excellent fishing. The author has done the research, sometimes fishing the lakes several times before discovering the bounty. He also covers forest fires, oil development and grazing as those topics apply to fly fishing in the area. Mike Kephart has paid his dues and yours – take advantage of this great opportunity with this new guide from Wilderness Adventures Press.
